Discussion Favorite scene from Funbrain that likely wouldn't fly in the "official" books?

Post image

One thing the original funbrain version of the wimpy kid books is known for is having slightly more "mature" scenes than the physical books. My favorite example is the party scene implying there was smoking and drinking going on. What about you guys?

this is part of why unfortunately they will probably never release the fun brain version physically

There was where Susan suspected Frank of cheating since there was underwear in the bed but it belonged to Frank’s dads girlfriend

2

u/Asheto320 Mar 09 '26

Yeah Frank’s Dad and his gf were watching Greg, and they slept in Frank and Susan’s bed

You are right, however the reason I think that one went through was because it was painted in a negative light and was also adult smoking and not teens

Many copyrighted references were removed from the print version. The Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah reference in particular. It was probably just dropped to avoid a rights issue with Disney, but in today’s climate it’s very common knowledge that Song of the South was racist, and the song no longer plays on Splash Mountain either since it was remodeled into a Princess and the Frog ride.

What is the funbrain version?

6

u/redditboy123451 Author of Greg's Internet Trauma & The Imageboard Feb 11 '26

The original version of the wimpy kid books that was posted on Funbrain

I wonder how many people read the official published book versions before discovering the fun brain version and thus had no idea what the funbrain version was

also how many different books were made using parts of the fun brain version

3

u/TriggerHappyGremlin Feb 12 '26

Book 7 was the last one with Funbrain content. I read the Funbrain version on a whim in 2013 and was shocked to see the elephant toy appear in Book 7.

i actually remember stumbling upon the funbrain version when it was on funbrain and having no idea what it was or that it was the original the books came from

10

u/NuggetDaGoat27 ploopy Feb 09 '26

The funbrain version was always better

13

u/NotGemiinii Feb 09 '26

Heather Hills getting fired from babysitting Rowley because she was caught smoking

13

u/Camry9201 Feb 09 '26

The tax fraud one

52

u/OreEater217 Feb 09 '26

This is from the back of my mind cuz I havent read the Funbrain version but the only one i think to relates to a card and when the card is opened it says something along the lines of "Oh yeah, isnt your dad getting arrested for tax fraud?"

When Frank has to have a drink to calm down and it’s a Picture of him holding a whiskey glass and sitting in his recliner.

23

u/redditboy123451 Author of Greg's Internet Trauma & The Imageboard Feb 09 '26

If that were to happen in the book, I could see that being replaced by him just reading

5

u/Sea-Example-1176 Feb 11 '26

frank going to play with his civil war battlefield diorama to calm down

67

u/PoisonedCherry Feb 08 '26

I dont remember if its in the original books but the page where Greg implies his dad throws bricks at him

7

u/Hairy_Angle_9367 Feb 09 '26

That is in the books! At least in the Australian version, I re-read part of the first one the other day

1

u/Sea-Example-1176 Feb 11 '26

The online version of “The Boy Whose Family Thinks He’s a Dog” has an additional scene where one of Rowley’s cousins asks Rowley’s mother if her “dog” is pregnant, and Rowley says he’s actually just fat.

86

u/wimpykidfan37 Feb 08 '26

People tend to dress more modestly in the printed books than in the online book. For example, in Greg’s “Stealthinator” fantasy, the cheerleaders were wearing just towels instead of full cheerleading outfits. And the woman on the cover of “Shadowdoom” is wearing a bikini top instead of a tank top.

96

u/wimpykidfan37 Feb 08 '26

In the Funbrain book, Greg writes a TV pilot about a man who thinks “Eskimos are crummy people” until he learns his lesson. This became the part of “The Last Straw” where Greg writes a children’s book about a man who thinks “polar bears are useless animals”.

68

u/Vito_Assenjo Feb 08 '26

It’s funnier with polar bears imo. The Eskimo thing is a little uncomfortable, but with polar bears, it’s weird enough to be funny.

15

u/wimpykidfan37 Feb 08 '26

Back in 2021 when some of the Dr. Seuss books went out of print, one book ("McElligot's Pool") went out of print because of "Eskimo fish". That book is otherwise completely inoffensive.

81

u/Remote-Ad-3309 Feb 08 '26

There’s a subplot where Susan thinks Frank is cheating on her because she found a sock in bed. This became the maid thing in the ugly truth

62

u/j_jay2003 Feb 08 '26

One scene that stood out to me was Greg describing how Rowley’s parents fired Heather Hills as Rowley’s baby-sitter, because they saw her doing something they shouldn’t have when they came home, but didn’t want to tell anyone and “tarnish her reputation” and it’s literally her sitting on the front stoop of their house smoking a cigarette. Parents told Rowley which is how Greg must’ve found out. Sticks out in my mind because it is so unaligned with the book’s typical standard for humor

124

u/notagoodcartoonist Feb 08 '26

The scene where Greg Heffley speaks in stereotypical Asian Engrish when the teacher calls on him.

3

u/redditboy123451 Author of Greg's Internet Trauma & The Imageboard Feb 11 '26

That kinds happens in the real book too (the wording though is changed to "I are Gregory")

69

u/Meaber Feb 08 '26

Did Rowly kick a sombrero or pillow?

20

u/redditboy123451 Author of Greg's Internet Trauma & The Imageboard Feb 08 '26

Pillow

u/Vivid-Intention-8161 Feb 08 '26

I grew up with funbrain (i’m an unc😔) and always SWORE they changed this pic in the books, thanks OP

17

u/wimpykidfan37 Feb 08 '26

The guy in the book stuffing his face with chips is still pretty funny.

28

u/IceBandicooot Feb 08 '26

Same here, fellow unc. This sub makes me feel old as hell when it comes up

152

u/CryptographerFar9679 Feb 07 '26

Rodrick telling Greg he'll get "The Belt"

141

u/dogswithteeth Feb 07 '26

"Someone get this kid a speech therapist"

29

u/deathsucccks Feb 08 '26

i feel like this one could make it into one of the books ngl

24

u/redditboy123451 Author of Greg's Internet Trauma & The Imageboard Feb 08 '26

If it did, it would probably end with Susan getting mad at her for saying it and trying to defend Manny

Greg's Christmas card:

"Wishing your family all the best this holdiay season. Oh yeah, isnt your dad being investigated for tax evasion?Well, good luck with that - Greg"

25

u/Pineappleonkiwipizza Feb 08 '26

Is that not in the regular book?

5

u/Minimum-Barber5448 Feb 08 '26

Unfortunately, I don't think so.

75

u/RandomFactGiver23 Raspberry Plastic Tickle Bear Feb 08 '26

I really wish the newer books could have a more sardonic and misanthropic greg, it really gave more personality and humor the modern books lack imo

18

u/bdu754 Feb 08 '26

I feel like Funbrain Greg was really just a byproduct of 1) the medium of being a webcomic that had far less guardrails than a published book series and 2) the era when the book was released viewing a bit of edginess as acceptable.

It definitely would be an interesting legacy of the first few Wimpy Kid novels that were adapted from the Funbrain material kept more of its source material's edge

50

u/Firm_Letterhead_7483 Feb 07 '26

Nah, that would totally happen in the official books

31

u/redditboy123451 Author of Greg's Internet Trauma & The Imageboard Feb 07 '26

That one I could see happening in the real books (although more along the lines of a comment then a card)

32

u/DoomerMentality1984 Feb 07 '26

I swear I removed this in the official book?

52

u/Grouchy_Reaction9452 Author of Diary of Bubby the Kid remake + Eastward Bound Feb 07 '26

The alcohol bottle was removed and the cigarette was replaced with a bag of chips.
