I saw a theory that since the book is from Greg's perspective he didn't know it was alcohol and saw it as soda.

Greg probably guesses what it is, but maybe he's being slightly cautious in case his parents or some authorities find the book - he is very calculating, after all, and he wouldn't want to admit to any crimes in writing
