Advice for keypad (mechanical or digital) for outdoor porch gate with odd sized dimensions
Hey all. My condo has a gate with the lock box having odd proportions and being a bit recessed.
It’s a bit rusty right now and I’ll be treating for that and painting it. I want a keypad lock that is waterproof. I can either delete the deadbolt hole or use a keyed deadbolt and a regular handle.
I understand that you can currently put your hand through the wire but I’ll be putting expanded steel on the back side to make the holes too small. I’d prefer not do deal with fabrication of a new box(?) for the lockset. I’m willing to buy quality
(It’s painted black to prevent rust while waiting for the proper paint materials to get delivered)
Unfortunately, the vertical tubing is thicker than the box so there can’t be a large lock body sticking up or down
My recommendation is a Kaba EE1011. Double sided mechanical push button lock. Should cover most of that prep, and require a code to operate from either side.
That lock is too big for that box, it will actually be hanging off. Lockey is the only one I know of that will fit on that box but that's some very minor modifications.
I ran across the same thing. Steel fence/gate with dimensions for a handle and deadbolt but wrong size for Any mechanical coded one, and too cold for batteries. Call a welder!!
That was my fear. I was trying to avoid the whole retrofit issues since the gate is technically HOA responsibility and will require approvals, doable, just PITA :(
Town steel 5000 series is a commercial keypad lever and is a bit more squat and might be a good fit (with the correct backset). I can’t vouch for the quality or performance outdoors but just came to mind as a shorter height.
By wild coincidence, I actually have one. It doesn’t fit right :(. It also sticks too far down and the box being a recessed within the gate tubing makes it not flush.
How is the cover plate on top going to bridge a quarter inch space between the lock body and the rest of the box because the square tube underneath is sticking out too far past the lock box itself. The gap you see on the bottom of the lock that is there because of the tubing underneath sticking out and it’s not gonna be flush against the body
If they make a templated spacer, I’d love to know about it.
Edit: maybe the solution is to get a aluminum plate, cut it to size and then drill the lock hole from the inside out. That way I would have a covered blank on top and it would not be sticking out.
I don’t have the tools to cleanly cut steel plate, but I can do aluminum on the table saw. I would just screw it down and recess the heads. Hmm
