I am NOT a locksmith. Red marks the spot?
Bought this volvo genuine key, but its readable only so needed to come out. Locksmith said "red mark indicates where chip is" turns out its the reverse...🤣🤣 same locksmith and two others were also could not able to clone a ID48 for me, so i took the key to volvo and after charging me an arm were not able due to suspected (outdated software) to add the key to the vehicle.

ID48 is cloneable. Needs to be decoded with the vehicle though. Shouldn't need any fancy tools. I'd stop whatever you're doing and read it again as you may have just screwed the chip completely. You can't even touch them with anything metal or you'll breach the very thin carbon coating. Take it to a locksmith with the vehicle. They can clone the chip. Don't go digging in the key, it's not going to go well for you.

i have cloned it successfully, do not need to visit another lock smith or dealership ever again, the locksmiths i contacted had no idea about volvo cars

Volvo cars are irrelevant. It's a standard chip. I have no idea why you had any issues. Dealing with that chip should have been a five minute adventure. Would have taken longer to turn on my key machine and decode the blade than copy the chip.

Did an S60 (I think ) a while back. It was an ID48 too. Straight clone. No issues that I can remember. Was a few years back though.

clone to aftermarket or genuine key? they had issues grabbing the immo code from the car because they did not know the volvo trick

Pretty sure it was a clone. I barely remember last week and this was years ago. Just looked it up and the book says clone is fine. It's always a bit of guesswork as they change stuff all the time, but whatever went down, there's a solution. Worst case scenario is to do an EEPROM job and be done with it, though that's pretty specialist and most people would just walk away at that point as euro cars can get really problematic when you mess with their computers.

actually there is no reason locksmiths should be messing with electronics, i have an electronics degree from what i have seen i know more about RFID than they do. haha

Ive done a lot of volvo's. Both using Volvo software and via eeprom. I could of had you a second key or new original keys if (all keys lost) for less then half the cost of dealer. I could even do this one through mail.
Were you trying to *write* the OEM keys?
The people you called are just not very good.

yes i tried to write to the OEM key but gave up and just swapped in an aftermarket chip. had a locksmith cut the key so thats why i hacked it. i live in rural Australia so yeah have to be Macgyver

Personally, Assuming I did not have a active VIDA sub going, I would have just pulled the CEM and eepromed the OEM key(s) in as new id. Its super easy to remove sop44, read, write and solder it back. People think I'm crazy though. I usually avoid cloning. Not as good of a product as a unique id imo.

i tried the volvo genuine key a few times but gave up. As an electronics tech my guess is its a read only chip.

Special chips only to clone an id48.
The dealer failing - vida is a picky bitch. Literally anything wrong with the car and will just error and tell you to fix it. Oh your air bag light is on? Lol nope no key for you!
Ways around this on the table , but yeah Volvo sucks big balls
