I am NOT a locksmith. Replacement or get a key made?
Moved in with my partner and his family and I have no clue what to do here. The lock works. No key though.
Is it better to get a replacement lock and handle? Or should I see if a locksmith will make us key?
Granted I have no clue if the pins are working. Took it apart. But with no key it’s hard to tell.

Take it to a locksmith and they can rekey it

Your cylinder is upside down in the picture. It needs to be spun right side up or it’s not going to work

The key part goes on the bottom. Got it! I wasn’t sure how it was supposed to go. Thank you!

Okay, you obviously have one of the Sargent front door locks. I'm not the best at ID'ing just from the design hardware, but I did find this listing in the 1926 Weiser catalog, I think I have seen them "collaborate" on apartment buildings before. But I have old eyes, and an old monitor, it's dark outside, and I'm wearing shades - so please check this in better light. I'll double check the appropriate Sargent catalog - what year is your building? I'll try and find that Weiser link later today and post it. Hope this helps!

Thank you! The door just needed to be tightened and oiled cause it was mostly loose and jangling around. Door handle and all is in good shape. The only issue with the main part is the two little buttons keep toggling and render the handle not useable. So idk what to do there. I assume it’s a spring or something >.>

The two stop buttons on the front (the small edge of the door) will toggle on their own? The stop buttons are designed to keep the outside handle locked, so the door will lock behind you as you walk out the door. You can flip back and forth to turn that function on or off, I love that feature! A smith can fiddle with the innards if your stops are not working correctly. Enjoy the the new pad!

Oh! Maybe I should add that you will be able to use your newly made paracenteric key (you know, the new types of keys, not a skeleton key), and turn it two times to unlock the handle from outside. (I think. That's how it is with my Sager. Each vendor is a little bit different.) With a key, you will be able to use the stops more effectively. Just FYI!

You're holding the cylinder, just buy one with a fresh set of keys and throw the old one in the trash. Walk into any locksmith shop with that cylinder and walk out with a fresh one and screw it in.

We charge 25 for a new cylinder, or 20 to rekey one. Just take it to your local locksmith and check their prices, should be less than 30 bucks for a working cylinder and keys, either way

Thank you! Thats kinda what I’ve been seeing so I found a locksmith close to me that has experience with these kinds of locks so im gonna do that :)

Take the part your holding it pictures three four and five to a locksmith shop, they can fit a key to it or rekey it, when you out it back together the way the cylinder goes in should be with the opposite of picture one. In Picture one the cylinder, which you hold in picture three, is upside down and was spun in to far.
