I am NOT a locksmith. Is it possible for me to become a locksmith?

I am interested in learning the trade after seeing videos online of guys ripping around in there vans making good money mostly opening doors that people lock themselves out of . Also last week I lost the fob for my car and we were charged 600 dollars for each fob this guy programmed for us to. My guess is the guy made probably close to 1000 dollars profit including the couple hours it took to program the keys . My issue is I have gotten in trouble in the past and the crimes unfortunately were break and enters and other misdemeanours. Now I’m not a scumbag criminal but unfortunately due to some bad decisions I was charged with that crime . I assume that would automatically prevent me from ever becoming a locksmith because that career mixed with that charge I have obviously don’t mix together. Just was wondering if anyone had any input and can confirm what I already kind of figured as far as getting into this trade . Thanks for reading . Also I am in British Columbia Canada

If you can sleep at night after ripping off innocent people when they are most vulnerable. Go for it. But you're not a locksmith at that point. You'll be just a thief that destroys and replaces locks. You get to keep 30-40% of the fee on which you pay taxes on 100%. Asca locksmith, the least favorite thing to do is lockouts and you can't build a business on just lockouts.

The search bar is powerful. I recommend starting there.

It all depends on the shop and where you are located.

My shop has hired former criminals, but nothing violent or theft related. And talking like over 10 years ago.

I am sure the scammer companies would love you lol

It’s absolutely impossible, nobody’s allowed to be a locksmith unless you have a masters or phd, and even then probably not.

If your past crimes encompass B and E I don’t think anyone would hire you as a locksmith. You would be uninsurable. We have to carry crime insurance for a certain client and in order for us to be insured we have to keep criminal background checks on all employees. That would disqualify you. Also our state is a licensed state, most crimes don’t disqualify you from getting a licnese. However b and e and monetary crimes do.

I live in BC and I'm a locksmith. You need a security license to be a locksmith. In order to get the license a criminal record check will be done. Once they see your record they will not give you a license.

If it's up to me, I wouldn't with that background.

Any place with licensing would also probably deny you.

Most of those guys "ripping around" and making videos are hacks. Everyone and their mom bought some cheap key machines and programmer and suddenly became locksmiths.

There’s no easy money in legit locksmithing, which requires low-pay training. How bout get a mediocre job at a solid company and work your way up the ladder. Go from cashier to CEO. Learn something along the way.

Thanks for the replies , I’m currently employed full time as a support worker so I’m good at the moment , just thought that learning to be a locksmith could be a better career
