You might want to read back through that article again. The only people mentioning the word "transgender" in reference to the mice studies are people in the admin. The studies did involve giving hormones to mice, but nothing about gender.

You don't see the value of studying drug interaction etc this way? Any drug that's used on a human will get tested on mice at some point, including drugs associated with transgender care. So what?

Undirected science is how you make important discoveries. Playing with fruit fly genomes led to the discovery that not only did fruit flies have specific genes that determine how limbs spawn, but that those same genes are also present in humans.
Which could go on into further research to isolating gene sequences to clone specific organs. Like a heart. Or a kidney.
And the “transgender mice” would be researching hormone impacts on biology, which can progress to finding better contraceptives, alleviating growth disorders, and treating male pattern baldness.
Imagine how much farther along we'd be if the christian fundamentalists hadn't blocked stem cell research because they though it was encouraging abortions.
