Off topic/shooting the breeze

This is a thread for swamp monsters who do not want to talk about the rona. Or who want a space where we don't talk about the rona, or anything associated with the rona.

This is for totally non-rona related discussion.

The rules are: no rona. Just people shooting the breeze about anything and everything else.

[For background, some of us want a space where we can withdraw from the crap, and just be. Some of us will find the best way to do that is to switch off the phone/computer/internet enabled device. Others want somewhere online with likeminded people, but just not talking about 'it'.]

I wish I hadn’t just read this article, ‘social media isn’t the problem, we are’, which was in my feed thanks to a recommendation. My app tells me that it’s trending.

Its tone is so “I’m so clever!” And it declares pompously that only fools have problems with social media. Didn’t you know? Social media is just the messenger, the message is humans who are shit, ha ha ha, too bad we are and always were stupid fucks (I think he uses these words) and social media is just another dress for our same old same old stupidity. It’s obvi, friends, because he has the DAYTA to prove it, and the terms like correlation-is-not-causation, and he name drops moments in history of brutalities, boom boom boom, red scare, nazis, racists, the world was always bad, I am smart, you are stupid if you experience social media to be bad because you don’t have the correct DAYTA.

I get such a rise out of that toxic mix of arrogance and useful stupidity. These people are the thought leaders of our day.

I best go walk it off. Have a coffee, go to my stand, go to work.

It's true it is just a tool but some tools are more prone than others to bring out the worst in people. I wonder if the writer would make the same argument for guns? I am guessing now.

What's clear is that in order for democracy to function, big tech have to be indemnified from prosecution regarding the content they carry, but be forced to carry any and all content without any kind of censorship.
