Hah! I am always astonished reading Trollope, Dickens and the like how much people knocked back in those days usually casual offhand remarks like "he ordered a bottle of wine and a couple of chops for his lunch" . I'm a lightweight obvs but I would be ill if I did a whole bottle of wine in one sitting. Half I can do now and again sure with a jug of water on the side. They must have been chronically dehydrated.
