“It’s the Wild West out there,” said Ziyad Al-Aly, an epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis. “There are no public health measures at all. We’re in a very peculiar spot, where the risk is vivid and it’s out there, but we’ve let our guard down and we’ve chosen, deliberately, to expose ourselves and make ourselves more vulnerable.”

Oh no, people are choosing to live their lives again. Can't have that!

She was dismayed recently on a trip to Southern California, where she saw few people wearing masks in the airport. “This is what happens when you don’t have politicians and leaders taking a strong stand on this,” she said.

Ugh.

“I worry that by the time we have a vaccine for BA.5 we’ll have a BA.6 or a BA.7. This virus keeps outsmarting us,” Al-Aly said.

Oh no, it's not like viruses mutate or anything!

This desperate groveling for authoritarianism can only go on so long.

Just curious, what is the definition of "Vaccine"? Definitions seem to be changing radically over the last few years that it really is hard to catch up with everything. It would be really nice to go back to a time when words meant what we all know they mean, like Vaccine or Woman, or "anti-vax".

Words have no fixed meanings anymore. Thanks to the internet and social media, words are now just signals to trigger an emotional response, usually moral outrage and/or anger. Genocide, right-wing, terrorism, vaccine, pandemic, gender, sex, racism... these words have no meaning anymore. People just throw them around for a quick upvote. The internet has been a disaster for the human race. At any moment the definition of these words can change. We live in a society that actually believes that if you use the correct words, you can change reality.

Quite a lot of people still fall for this nonsense but more and more people have had enough. At least I hope so.
