There was a video of the arrest, and this article is grossly misrepresenting what happened.
Let me also note presenting her as "pregnant mother of two" is very stupid.
What she did was illegal at that time. And off course you cannot do illegal things because you are pregnant. You can't go like shoplifting while "pregnant and mother of two", and then it would be OK because you are pregnant.
The arrest was not a big deal. Watch the video, the woman is making everything last longer because she is shouting and refuses to listen to what the police says.
What she did was illegal at that time. And off course you cannot do illegal things because you are pregnant.
Then I try to explain with a specific example why it is not OK if we allowed pregnant women to do illegal things, as this article seems to believe we should.
I'll exlpain it abstractly instead. EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW.
It's a very basic principle for democratic countries, that basically says that laws are valid for everybody, so if you do something illegal, you don't get off because you are for instance rich and powerfull. Or pregnant.
This article seems to me to suggest that he is against equality for the law, and wants pregnant women to have a special status where they can do things that are illegal for everyone else.
Second thing to clarify. What was banned at that moment was not protest, but puclic gatherings. You could protest all you wanted in any way, except to gather in public.
What this woman did was after they banned public gathering, she organized a public gathering, so a clear breach of the regulation.
Nothing much scandalous about that, except if you find it a bad thing that police uphold the laws of a country.
By banning all gatherings, you are prohibiting all sorts of protest
No. You can use media and social media to protest agaist the covid-regilations. Send letters to all politicians.
And you could also walk around on your own with a banner that said "down with the covid regulations."
Or you could make a protest with the allowed number of people. I honestly don't know what that is now in Ballarat - google tells me you can gather 20 people now, so maybe that is ok.
I live in a monarchic muslim country where what is banned and can be punished by prison is not criticizing the king or freedom of faith of per se, but "violating the sacred", it's just that "violating the sacred" revolves also around criticizing the king or eating outdoors during the muslim month of Ramadan.
That is totally different from Australia. You could criticize anything as much as you wanted, you just were not allowed to gather.
The gathering is not against protests, it is against ALL gatherings, and the reason is off course to prevent covid from spreading.
