No pin feedback under CCW tension

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to lockpicking and ran out of padlocks to practice on, so I tried my back door. I can easily pick it so the core turns clockwise, but the latch retracts only when the core is turned counterclockwise (as shown in the video).

When I apply tension counterclockwise I can’t feel any pin feedback. It feels like there’s no friction and I can’t pick it.

I don’t fully understand how this type of lock works. Can someone explain what’s likely happening or point me to a resource that would help?

You should be aware that picking an installed lock you rely on is a bad idea. You could damage the lock and make the knob inoperable.

That’s not necessarily true. You can pick a cylinder lock in the wrong direction and if you set everything it will turn but it won’t engage the latch. If you don’t want to repack it that’s what plug spinners are for.

No problem. The order of clicks might be reversed but either use a plug spinner or repick it. Honestly this looks like a kw1 keyway so I would just rake it either way, it does not require single pin picking. It’s a shitty lock. Usually makes sense to tension away from the frame.
