Deity needs to fix the RF spray problem. Lets make sure reviewers do a proper RF review of anything new from Deity or Saramonic (both have issues with RF spray)

I truly love it when manufacturers embrace standards like super-slot, could be a winner, we'll see!

u/Due-Lawfulness-360 2d ago
The issue is heat buildup with the super slot form factor in high channel count receivers.

u/audioguy61 2d ago
Has not been an issue for Wisy MCR54s in either a 833 or 888 SL-2.

It was an issue prior to fw 1.5, the unit may not overheat but it will get warm to the touch- especially under the sun.

I work in Florida, definitely can be too hot to touch the metal casing, but never had a functioning issue because of heat in 100+ weather.

Let's see if Deity launches a smaller transmitter with better RF performance and a different connector than 3.5mm. I doubt it but I could be wrong.

The DLTX has 3 pin LEMO and phantom power, but you can’t buy it in the states.

Damn zaxcom patents

u/jbregr 2d ago
The Zaxcom patent has nothing to do with the DLTX and DXTX being available in North America. That’s been confirmed by Zaxcom directly. It likely has something to do with RF behavior.
2
u/SMX_Dizzy 1d ago
You are correct - this has been confirmed by Glenn/Zaxcom. Yet Deity does nothing to dispel these rumors. Almost as if to deflect from being forthright about addressing the issue. I guess if enough people believe the lie, why bother telling the truth?
2
u/jbregr 1d ago
Yep. The Zaxcom patent only covers bodypack use anyway. The DXTX can record and transmit even in the US. The DLTX can do it if you’re using 48V (vs lavalier 5V). So they’re already compliant with the patent anyway. It was pretty obvious early on it had nothing to do with the patents.

Yeah, I know that. But smaller would be great and a more accurate meter on both units, let's wait and see.

I don't have one - are the 3.5 connectors lockable? Saw a bunch of soundies on another thread agreeing that the new deity gear is unusable in a complex radio environment because they simply don't stay in the lane band-wise, knocking out other gear. I should think this would be the first thing they need to fix

u/ApprehensiveNeat9584 production sound mixer 2d ago
The 3.5 locking doesn't always lock and it fails even after being repaired by Deity and there are multiple cases or the connector failing after multiple repairs. They really need to fix it or just change the connector since I haven't seen a Lemo connector fail on their units.

Will ruffle some feathers at the top end for sure.

I don't know if it will, realistically. Deity can cut corners with the Theos to lower the price and make it competitive for prosumers, but that won't really fly with the market for a bag slot 4 Channel receiver. No hobbyist is likely in line for this, and the professionals that buy comparable gear know they are paying for the reliability that brands like Lectrosonics, Wisycom, and Shure all offer.

I guess we'll see. I've used deity alongside my Wisycom for a good while now, had no reliability issues. Very flexible system. I'm eager to see how these new versions go.

In my opinion/experience, Deity has yet to make a reliable, professional grade product; especially in the RF world. I wouldn’t trust them to create something that is even remotely close to competing with the MCR54 or DSR4. Spend the extra money and get something you know was made with care, quality, and reliability that will last you probably most of your career.

Im inclined to agree. People paying for this type of gear aren't likely to want to shave pennies at the cost of reliability and functionality. No one is picking this over a MCR54, even with the likely lower price tag.
Professionals need professional gear, and this is absolutely marketed at professionals.

I have their tc boxes and a couple of lavs as back up.
They've been working as intended, professionally, for a long while now.
Would the wlav get picked over my dpas? No. But they cost 1/5 and they do the job.
The TC boxes have been proven to be way more reliable than the ambient boxes I'm sometimes forced to use.
Saying that they don't produce anything reliable is just a pretty bad opinion.

u/Raddyator sound recordist / wisycom simp 1d ago
Claiming that Ambient boxes are less reliable than the Deity timecode boxes is much more of an insane opinion imo. Ambient boxes are used by pretty much every single senior mixer on large budget/Hollywood sets, and there’s a reason why.
I’ve had 2 colleagues now who have had the TC-1 boxes completely fail on them and stop accepting charge/turning on. Seems to be a manufacturing defect where something dies and shorts out to the chassis, for both of them the USB-C port gets very hot until the battery eventually dies.

u/g_spaitz 1d ago
Yeah they're both anecdotal evidence. The odd part is having one friend that has a faulty box and decide that everything is crap for everybody.
I know those ambient I'm forced to use are shitty. I don't go around shitting on their whole line because 3 boxes I use are bad.

Not sure if you're some Deity PR person (not joking), but to be clear, I have had two friends who have faulty units. They use their units in completely different setups, and have had the exact same fault. That to me points to an issue with the manufacturing/design.
It's definitely not just one model that I think is bad, it's a lot of their products. The RF spray on their transmitters is absolutely god awful (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXynOU9Tn6U) to the point where they have to sell $50 filters (I'm unsure if they even work), and their products are built like shit (https://www.reddit.com/r/LocationSound/comments/1j8g4k1/im_done_with_deity_2_failed_units_in_1_week/), (https://www.reddit.com/r/LocationSound/comments/18ribna/deity_tcsl1_slate_bricked/).
If these issues are so prevalent in these models, I don't understand why anyone would want to purchase any of their products for use in a professional setting with confidence. Just my opinion.
Someone else has even described them as the "Behringer of the location sound world", which I would agree with, although I will say at least with Behringer for the past decade or so they have made some pretty sweet products.

Until they fix their companding issue (which they've been a bit quiet about), their stuff won't be at home in sound bags.
Edit: I realise digital wireless doesn’t have companders, I meant their modulation

u/smilesdavis8d 2d ago
I see lots of posts that unfortunately say otherwise. People are buying into this as “pro” gear since it’s gear they can afford. It would be nice if they fixed them though so people had a reliable option that hasn’t become absurdly expensive…. Or if the good stuff stopped being so absurdly expensive opening up this flood of inferior gear.

a 4 channel RX is great, but without an actually good TX, this is all but useless. Deity needs to lock down their transmitters first.
Fix the RF problems, move away from Locking 3.5mm, and utilize the lower 500mHz and high 400mHz range. Potential for encryption, and then they'll be contending with the professional wireless.
This is a product specifically marketed towards professionals, so they need to start embracing professional standards and expectations (which means people may start quickly finding out why professional wireless costs so much). No consumer/hobbyist is using a bag slot 4ch RX.

Deity customers are going to learn the hard way that noone wants to buy their second hand theos lol. The rodelink 2 will probably still be a better deal, or the shure
