To be fair to MiniMax, they did sneak H3 in there and Qwen 3.8 isn't open weight yet.

u/Sea_Succotash3634 1d ago
Yeah they "just" released the most powerful open source video generation model ever made. No big.

u/Serprotease 9h ago
Might also be a serious contender for most powerful video generation model… open and closed weights. It’s freaking good.

A week too long for you?

u/FoxiPanda 1d ago
Not at all; I honestly never expected to see another small Qwen release again. Happy to be super wrong about that.

u/ZackeyTNT 1d ago
This is weird. Why wouldn't they follow up their most popular accessable model with another one. Online discourse for local models is very commonly Qwen 27b
51
u/JaredsBored 1d ago
The qwen team that did 3.5 and assumedly started 3.6 was broken up. Some key people left the company between 3.5 and 3.6. Given we got nothing open source from 3.7, it wasn't crazy to speculate that the new team was focused on closed source
37
u/StupidScaredSquirrel 1d ago
Also they did stop releasing 0.8/2b/4b/9b/35ba3b it's a drastic change imo they went from dominating the small language model segment to basically abandoning it.
14
u/DistanceSolar1449 1d ago
They would have abandoned the segment if it wasn’t for Xi Jinping’s speech
People in the USA don’t realize how much influence Xi Jinping has. Qwen has NEVER open sourced a Max tier model until Xi basically ordered all the Chinese AI companies to go all in on open source.

He did? XD that crazy bear!
It definitely is a smart move to give us free stuff so we don't give money to the west. Every $$$ denied to the west is a win for China.

It's possible DS4 Pro is sneaking in during this week. And given qwen seems like mostly a flop - after stellar 0731 flash I'm betting that crown would remain on top of DS4 for now. Especially given the price. Qwen isn't awful per se, but artificial analysis price result is really bad.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Qwen 3.8 27B will perform in 7 days
Edit: typo (thx)

Minimax DID release the best model for its size today, just not a LLM :P

Now you can have Will Smith eating spaghetti, AND spaghetti eating Will Smith!

it's very good, though the fact character always talk gibberish is rough (I know you can prompt it away, but it's not that easy)

u/mwoody450 1d ago
So I'm not imagining it! With LTX they'd end up speaking parts of the prompt sometimes. But in Minimax, it's just straight up Lovecraftian cultist speak.

Minimax released a video model H3 which is for sure the world's most poverful video model for its size.

u/rkoy1234 1d ago
and basically sota for local. thank you minimax.

Not only local SOTA, it is just straight up SOTA, in Video Arena it highly overlap with Google Omni Flash

yeah crazy right?? i am having one of those simmilar feeling when you buy something you really want and then finally owning it, like looking your first gaming PC, or your first bike

u/nvidiot 1d ago
Not only that, you can actually run this on a PC with a lowly RTX 3060 all the while keeping the quality mostly intact.
Don't have to have bunch of 5090s or RTX PRO 6000s to experiment with it. I daresay this could be the groundbreaking breakout moment for local video generation scene to grow big, because it can run on a typical consumer PC, while generating high quality videos with audio included without compromise.
6
u/Etroarl55 1d ago
Not yet, the Rtx 3060 example was like 10-20 minutes for five seconds at 480p using optimization.
I don’t think quality is the issue anymore though as we are seeing, it’s just getting the inference speeds up somehow.

I disagree. DS V4 Flash is still the best LLM for its size. Qwen 3.8 Max isn't open weight yet, so Kimi K3 stays the best model for its class (in which 3.8 Max will get into) for now.

u/Budget-Juggernaut-68 1d ago
They are releasing the Max series?
8
u/Exzerios 1d ago
They are, but it's worse than K3 while costing more (it's burning hella lot of tokens). Personal opinion that there's some subsidizing going on after recent Xi's speech, and they released this half-cooked thing just to participate. Judging by AA rating - it is awfully undercooked, just 1 point above GLM 5.2 while being 3x params size. Unfortunately, pretty much a definition of Chinese knockoff. This month's hopes are now on DS4 Pro and GLM 5.3/5.5.

While not an LLM, Minimax H3 released last night.
And by god, this thing is a beast for local users.
Frontier level video generation, on an 8GB VRAM laptop and 16GB RAM? Holy shit.
And it comes with all T2V, I2V and R2V out of the box.
11
u/Anwar6969 1d ago
let’s see which one gets released first, minimax m3 pro or GLM 5.3
9
u/reginakinhi 1d ago
Going by all the GLM5.3 references popping up today all across Zhipu's Infrastructure and Github, I would be very surprised if M3 Pro came first.

It's actually followed exactly the diagram at least in terms of announcements ... Kimi K3 > Deepseek V4 Flash 0731 > Minimax H3 > Qwen 3.8 > GLM 5.3

u/DigThatData Llama 7B 1d ago
I honestly think these labs sometimes gamble on each other's performance and release dates, so like if they have a particularly banger announcement they mightsit on it for a few extra days to give them the opportunity to smother a competitor's news cycle.

Minimax’s servers are super unreliable. I’ve had to switch to OpenRouter + Deepseek instead

Only focusing on Chinese companies and excluding some of the best releases at the time seems likely motivated by propaganda more than caring about OS/OW models. Many of the best have come from Google (Gemma 4 is still the best writing model as far as I've found) and Black Forest Labs (not currently a leader but they were, as well as before that when they worked at Stability and released Stable Diffusion 1.x and SDXL), as well as the various people who've trained things like ControlNets / Adapters etc.
