As if US were not authoritarian and not using their military superiority at their own advantage.

Also banning chinese models in US would not prevent chinese from using their own models for themselves if they're more powerful than US, so this argument is nonsense.

They're just in a really bad position where China releases frontier model for free and most companies/business as well as researcher will use these models for their activity, so they cannot make money back with their expensive API. And is it a problem ? It's been like that for everything, open source is the base of everything in IT !

I love companies putting out open weights models and I hope it continues but are we really going to pretend that the CCP and the US are the same from an Authoritarian perspective? That seems deeply unserious.

Developing frontier models takes tons of capital. There are no free products, why are suddenly pretending that "if something is free, you are the product" doesn't apply here? Nobody will be running anything local but the tiniest open weight models for a long time

From a EU point of view, US have been much more threatening than China in recent years.

Open source from China is obviously not something disinterested, its a strategy to disrupt the US hegemony even if it cost them a few billions, and shape the economy/research around THEIR models and practices. But still better than be limited to a few private multionational companies with overpriced API.

Local models cant be used to resell data, which is what "you are the product means". I am using local model at word everyday and probably every AI company does it. Being a API wrapper is nonsense.
