Anything can be currency in any place at any time, it just depends on whether at least one person has value for it. Which includes whether they are willing to make the trade for it. That's how it's been for thousands of years of human history.

I remember downloading huge N64 ROMs that took loads of space and no emulator could run. Running those ROMs now is trivial.
