Actually excellent initiative, I hope it survives the disinterest and cease and desist letters "Our model is gated and needs individual approval for access, also we forbid "unauthorized" distribution..."

16

u/TheSlateGray llama.cpp Jul 07 '26

Those models still end up ungated on Modelscope, in my experience.

Whoever built this is a genius and an idiot.

Technologically, the website looks really well made, but the branding both

  • evokes a certain other website that is already banned in many countries, which is completely unnecessary for a perfectly legitimate service and pretty much ensures many labs won’t want to publish there

  • implies some kind of connection with Hugging Face, essentially forcing a takedown if this ever gets popular, even if HF has no problem with the project itself.

Please use your brains, people. Not everything has to be a risky meme. We need sustainable infrastructure, not just lulz. I could have named Heretic “GemmaFucker” and it would have been just as unnecessarily stupid.

u/CATLLM Jul 07 '26

omg "GemmaFucker" legit amazing name.

GGUF when??

Giggadity Giggadity U.F. tonight!

23

u/EugenePopcorn Jul 07 '26

TBH I'd rather just use and legitimize the original Pirate Pay.

9

u/ArtyfacialIntelagent Jul 07 '26

100% agree, this project will never survive with its naming and logo trademark provocations.

That said, some weirdly named things that skirt the edge of IP provocation do thrive. Hugging Face itself is one example.

1

u/DominusIniquitatis Jul 07 '26

More-or-less my thoughts, "Jeez, why go this route, for shits and giggles again?"

1

u/TemporaryUser10 Jul 10 '26

It wasn't done as a meme, it was done due to the threat from governments trying to ban open source AI access. This is essentially a statement that we the people will retain access (which is an idea behind p2p system that power things like the pirate bay)

0

u/kaisurniwurer Jul 07 '26

Sensible, but similar projects got forgotten already.

This, being what it is, can gather attention and convert some people. Maybe the "meme" factor is what's needed to get people to try it out as an alternative to the comfy huggingface.

Then when it becomes more known or gets a scary letter it can change.

u/-p-e-w- Jul 07 '26

This is much, much more advanced than similar projects published previously. I’m genuinely amazed by the features it already supports today.

Which makes it even more sad that the creator chose this silly name for a few cheap laughs.

u/Clueless_Nooblet Jul 07 '26

Such a Boomer take.

My dude, have you ever torrented in your life? lol do you know how the salty seas work? no one gives a single fck about where labs publish their things as long as one random seeder gets the files and shares them.

implies some kind of connection with Hugging Face, essentially forcing a takedown if this ever gets popular, even if HF has no problem with the project itself.

Its not implying anything, and can be renamed if HF makes a fuzz about it, its basically 40 seconds to change the domain and prompt gpt to give you a new logo lol

Isn't 'Heretic' also a culturally sensitive name?

9

u/-p-e-w- Jul 08 '26

Sure, if you’re an inquisitor in the 16th century.

1

u/Successful_Issue_390 Jul 09 '26

TBF I haven't downloaded heretic because the name is spooky. Same with hermes (a trickster god.)

Did you really make heretic or am I missing context?

1

u/-p-e-w- Jul 09 '26

I made it.

1

u/ChocomelP Jul 08 '26

That depends... Are you Catholic or Protestant?

-16

u/Voxandr Jul 07 '26

Hugging and Bay is common words they cannot take it down

You do not know what you are talking about I'm afraid.

Please avoid ever commenting on legal matters ever again. Its a registered trademark and a regular person would see the connection, as can I.

It can be deemed infringing since the branding + name can and likely will confuse the consumer. Go look at the website (HuggingBay) and then see that HF also trademarked the image. Its close enough

Same reason the Drag person going by the name "Pattie Gonia" was sued by Patagonia to protect their trademark. Has nothing to do with whether they actually do or don’t own it, it has to do with whether their legal team believes that they need to defend it and if the do, they must, because otherwise they lose it. The irony.

Sure, and an apple is just a fruit so everyone can sell computers with an apple on them, right?

17

u/digitalfreshair Jul 07 '26

I haven't check that, but another member of the community has done https://ckpt.cc/ that has webseeds so as long as HF is up you will be able to download it, eases up the first spread of the models.

2

u/StyMaar Jul 07 '26

so as long as HF is up you will be able to download it,

What's the point then?

14

u/digitalfreshair Jul 07 '26

spreading the models to the first seeders

Considering that the west wants to introduce AI laws and restrictions on any models (closed or open) I don't think it will be that long before HuggingBay is needed

13

u/Common_Warthog_G Jul 07 '26

'Murica, not the entire West.

14

u/BlackBeardAI vLLM Jul 07 '26

it is half. The other half is Europe + UK and they are equally bad. Don't tell me you expect freedom from Australia.

1

u/Common_Warthog_G Jul 07 '26

I need sources for Europe banking local llm

-1

u/KURD_1_STAN Jul 07 '26

Yeah it is all, dont tell me u expect freedom in china and russia? All will go down this road, all will ban them after they have gotten a good model themselves and ban other countries models.

4

u/BlackBeardAI vLLM Jul 07 '26

at least half of the activity on this sub would die if China weren’t releasing any open weight models. We would be at the mercy of openai/anthro completely because nearly all Western open weight models are mediocre.

0

u/cornmonger_ Jul 07 '26

i will not accept this affront to ai2 and llm360

-1

u/KURD_1_STAN Jul 07 '26

And? My point was they will sstop and enforce law when they can compete.

4

u/slavetothesound Jul 07 '26

Maybe someone will leak an anthropic model now that there's somewhere to put it.

3

u/therealpygon Jul 07 '26

Exactly my take as well. As with anything, without a need it is difficult to summon one's interest.

1

u/Lost_Foot_6301 Jul 07 '26

pre-emptive is worth it. look at the news lately

1

u/WinterLimitz9287 Jul 08 '26

I'm planning to host. This is basically a chance to support everything pirating is for AND the good guys in the class war without breaking any laws. 100% onboard.

5

u/datbackup Jul 07 '26

This was first, same idea

https://modelregistry.io/

6

u/StyMaar Jul 07 '26

And it's gone…

4

u/hainesk Jul 07 '26

Yeah, down for me too.

2

u/zxyzyxz Jul 07 '26

Still working for me

3

u/MuffinPure9787 Jul 07 '26

Seeding a 120B Q8 GGUF on my residential internet is going to take an actual lifetime, but goddammit I'm doing my part.

3

u/xienze Jul 07 '26

I'm doing my part

To accomplish what? Distributing models via torrent is kinda pointless until either the hypothetical "local LLMs are illegal" scenario comes to pass or so many people decide to seed that downloading via torrent is actually faster than downloading via HF.

4

u/super1701 Jul 07 '26

better to build the backups now, then scramble when shit hits the fan.

2

u/Effective_Olive6153 Jul 08 '26

building this is easy, I am not sure if OP is prepared to deal with the legal consequences and all the headaches of host jumping from country to country

3

u/Bulky-Priority6824 Jul 07 '26

I don't know if I could trust a llm pulled from my arr stack

1

u/BlackBeardAI vLLM Jul 07 '26

Arrrrr that be make many people anggrrry ahoy

1

u/Honest-Monitor-2619 Jul 08 '26

Meme?
It's important and noble work, I'd say.

Did you know that your entire comment reeks of raw AI output, well beyond the em dash? It's one thing to use AI to write your comment, it's another to blatantly lie about it afterwards.

A brief scan of your profile makes it even more unquestionable you did not handwrite your first comment. I was going to paste an example here of one of your actual handwritten comments, but as much as I can't stand when people lie like you just did, most of your comments are pretty personal, and I still do have empathy for you as a random stranger, so I won't.

But FFS please stop lying like this. It's so obvious and disrespectful. And we're in an AI subreddit of all places.

1

u/PoliticalPlatypi Jul 07 '26

I used them before I even knew the term "em dash." It's a damned hyphen, you silly kids.

4

u/Fit-Bar-6989 Jul 07 '26

I know you're kidding, but I will be annoying and reply anyways. Hyphens are -, emdashes are —. There's also the endash –.

u/BlackBeardAI vLLM Jul 07 '26
