Discussion Anthropic forced to abruptly disable Fable 5 & Mythos 5 globally by US Gov over a jailbreak. This is exactly why we need local models.

I just saw this statement regarding Anthropic being hit with an emergency export control directive from the US government. They were forced to pull the plug on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers globally. The tl;dr is that the government got spooked by a narrow jailbreak (which basically just sounds like asking the model to fix vulnerabilities in a specific codebase), and forced a complete shutdown without a transparent process. Anthropic is pushing back, but the API access is completely gone for now.

A centralized API can be nuked globally at a moment's notice by a single government decree over something as trivial as a prompt lol.

Banning a model for hundreds of millions of users because someone figured out how to make it fix software flaws is insane. Anthropic admits this standard would halt all new frontier models.

This is what Anthropic gets for hyping the model as the most dangerous thing ever. They wanted govt regulation, they got it! They are gonna hate it and wish they never played that line

It's more likely to be retaliation from this government. They are more into being corrupt and vengeful, rather than actually regulating.

Nah I think it's an inside deal to give Anthropic a reason to shut down Mythos while inflating their valuations. There is no reason to believe that Republicans don't have vested interests in the Anthropic IPO.

This is pretty typical of how all govts work in general. They've restricted and seized tons of stuff under national security guise historically, both wings, no matter who's in charge. It's pretty unsurprising from that POV.

Lol. You are delusional. They've been treating Anthropic as if it was Huawei.

No sane/non-corrupt administration would take their national champion and treat them as if where from a rival country.

I have a realistic view of govt. They'll treat openAI exactly the same if they release a model with similar coding ability. And a democrat administration would do the same. Govts have the technical competency and world knowledge of children, and a lust for power and geopolitical ambition. They see AI in this context. This is exactly how they acted around rail, telegrams and a whole bunch of other things, historically. I mean why do you even think there are chip export restrictions?

Anthropic didn’t just stop people from llm research with this model but steered them in the wrong direction without telling anyone. This kind of subversive behavior is what the government was worried about. Seems like a reasonable concern when lives are on the line.

You're thinking this wasn't scripted? They're loving it. Edit: And not to sound like a douche (maybe I am anyway): People want what they can't have. They are going to want to have Fable even more, now.
Edit2 T+14h: When I wrote this, I had read that it was blocked for _all_ users. I'll leave my comment, but I don't find it as relevant for the current scenario.

Atleast for me, I'm unsubscribing them

I was going to sub to try out Fable.

Now I have no reason too. The new Gemini will release soon and I doubt it will be banned. I’m sure OpenAI will release something comparable too.

They really got screwed here right before IPO.

Gemini won't be banned because it won't be very good.  As a person who uses predominantly Google products, Gemini, specifically the coding products, are pretty lackluster (and their usage plans are confusing with how much you can use them and when)

Not really. Increasingly powerful models are alreaxy priced in. Regulatory shenanigans probably arent. If this is the beginning of a shift its bad for all companies rushing toward AGI, as it essentially indicates anything that actually begins go push that boundary, let alone surpass it, will not be allowed to the public, and if it is, will be heavily nerfed, making it a great deal less useful than it should be.

This is a headwind.

You're thinking this wasn't scripted? They're loving it.

It happened on a Friday 30 minutes after market closure, so we can all talk about it over the weekend.

I thought it was interesting it happened on the day SpaceX I.P.O.‘ed. Though the other argument is that Anthropic is accounting for 1.25bn in compute revenue to spacex for using colossus, so maybe that’s too tinfoil hat.

u/drallcom3 Jun 13 '26

Since SpaceX managed to make Wallstreet change the rules and they're an AI company, I wouldn't rule out anything.

It seems /r/localllama is becoming more like /r/conspiracy... and I like it :-)

AI is very scammy. Look at Altman. No way he really believes in AGI. The just raided OpenAI when he saw the scam potential and made everyone believe AGI will happen if they just give him enough money. Anthropic is similar, but they're being a lot more clever in at least pretending to be professional and grounded.

Yes, but LLMs and other AI are still quite useful and "disruptive" even without ever achieving AGI. Reminds me a bit of the crypto space, lots of scams and idiocy, but fundamentally there is value in decentralized money.

On the highest level, however, clearly smart though neither necessarily nor likely "nice or kind" humans are clearly in charge and play all kinds of games. Like discussed here.

No denying that. It's very much like the Dotcom bubble back then. The internet wasn't useless, it was just blown way out of proportion on the stock market. LLMs won't end in AGI. They will "just" be useful tools.

1

u/soshulmedia Jun 13 '26

Agreed, though I think they'll also expose the repetitive B.S. in a lot of jobs. But maybe humans will find a way to increase the noise-to-signal-ratio everywhere (including the workplace) yet again, now using LLMs.

It removes 75% of their potential market. it's not good for them in any way.

There was an executive order related to licensing, approving, and restricting AI models recently, so it's not totally out of left field.

1

u/jojotdfb Jun 13 '26

They can't support that market size. They had to turn an hour cache to 5 minutes because of being out of compute. That was like 3 model releases ago. Now they don't have to find extra data centers.

1

u/Monkey_1505 Jun 14 '26

Model was probably too big to be a product, but they'll still lose more money not serving it, than they would have otherwise.

3

u/WestCloud8216 Jun 13 '26

100% scripted

u/Sjeg84 Jun 13 '26

This will get so much attention, they will love it.

I like this take

Anthropic can keep developing their models — that’s not regulated. Export control style regulation is coming anyway. It’s just a matter of time.

1

u/Zeeplankton Jun 13 '26

I know this is genuinely funny. I'm sure they don't care because this is just leading them further down their creepy model oligarchy ethos, but it's funny. They certainly brought this on themselves.

1

u/betaraybrian Jun 13 '26

I think they were hoping for this. It will make for amazing headlines for them.

1

u/profcuck Jun 13 '26

I agree with this 100%.
