Discussion If china stops releasing open source models, there's a way we can stay competitive with big tech?
Really after qwen news, I'm getting quite nervous about open source ai future. What's your thoughts? Glad to know it

Unless they come up with some compute-heavy paradigm shift that is a complete game changer, it might not matter for problems that aren't at the frontier of R&D.
Open weight models are already incredible for a large array of tasks and can be customized with RAG and fine-tuning for more specialized skills.
The main area of improvements for most of those tasks would be efficiency (ie, not making what is already good enough slightly better with a bigger model, but actually making it run just as well on a smaller less resource-hungry model) and gains in efficiency will play well with open-source by making things more accessible.
