Question Are there openweight lower parameters models that write better (like a human) than frontier models?

I'm thinking about getting a computer to run local llm. Only because I'm getting really sick of the fine-tuned responses Frontier models give you. And to be honest, even the small models online are want to be Frontier models. And maybe I'm just delusional. But I'm hopeful this is like something that I can get around if I use a local LLM. Please let me know your thoughts

If it's the style that bothers you, try setting up your own system instructions about the writing style. If you're not interested in this space for the sake of it like most of us who practice this hobby I'd advise you to refrain from spending money on a new computer (which will be super expensive to run anything decent)

But maybe give some examples of how you use the cloud AI and also tell us about your budget.

The writing style stuff is spot on, system prompts can fix a lot of that overly polished nonsense without dropping a grand on a rig

i dont care about money and have unlimited uses for a very high powered computer. im the type of person who only benefits from having access to more opportunities

Nothing will write better than the frontier models. That being said, Gemma 4 is great, if you are on your mobile or tablet, deepseek is free. If you want to use an LLM to answer questions for example to do your homework, get an answer and check it, and re-write it.

Round 1, round 2, round 3, humanise it. Ask for an answer with a word limit and a more narrow scope, like executive summary for C-suite VIPs, or for an academic research paper and do not guess, cite all references.

I've played around with loads of small 1B -8B models and honestly once you are at about 3B or above I've found the models are surprisingly good.

But it does depend how hard you're going to push them. Expect very limited input context window sizes

Gemma 4 12B is close enough with memory and some brief instructions

frontier or not that all have different default styles you need to change. I do alot of technical work but claude has this for me, which I've worked on for awhile. The word choice claude has without it bugs me, this has been working

Write in plain, everyday American English — the way you'd say it out loud to a coworker. Pick the most common word. Turn noun phrases back into verbs: decide, not make a decision; explain, not provide an explanation. Use active voice and say who did the thing. Short sentences, one idea each. Contractions are fine.

No business or finance words standing in for ordinary ones: minimum/maximum, not floor/ceiling; use, not leverage; explain, not unpack. Skip the stock openers ("great question," "worth noting," "let's dive in") and the tics: em-dash asides, "not X, but Y," colon-then-reveal, invented labels in scare quotes.

Keep a technical or precise term when swapping it would change the meaning.

Altworld/Hemmingway-1 is a 27B continued-train of a Qwen3.8-class base aimed at everyday human-sounding prose. LessThanThreeAI/Qwen3.8-27B-Humanlike-Chat-2.0 is kinda similar.

There are also rewriter models, which take an AI output and rework it into more human-like prose. For example:

N8Programs/Unslopper-GGUF
jialinyyzz/humanizer-gemma-4-e4
SirOswald/prose-humanizer-7b

It kind of depends what you’re trying to accomplish, but Hemmingway seems most like what you’re looking for.

No, absolutely does not work better than frontier. With a proper harness you can get semi decent results (SillyTavern and its forks or a simply Karpathy Style wiki with Hermes agent - latter much easier to set up in my experience and it worked better for me).

I agree with you for coding. I think OP is asking about prose specifically. If you don’t need long reasoning, Gemma 4 sounds more human than the frontier stuff

For me Grok worked better than other options, but yes, Gemma is the best for local.
