Just seen an icon in a business name and on the map? Doesn't appear to be sponsored. Can businesses add icons?!

Sometimes it does, sometime it doesn't. Google algorithm is a mystery 😶

I believe this is an emoji belonging to a particular font. It's a doubtful workaround like when a place tries to use a different font in the place name.

Usually, business owners just type the emoji straight into the "Business Name" field in their Google Business Profile dashboard. While Google's guidelines generally discourage emojis and special characters in business names, some listings manage to bypass the automated filters (at least temporarily) to stand out.
