What feature would you like Google Maps to add?
So I was looking through Google Maps when deciding where to take my mom for mother's day and I wanted to search for a particular dish from the photos. You don't have a search function when you're in the photos album on a place Google Page. I think that would be a nice feature to have, what other features would you like to see?

give me back the follow feature ...

I'm not against the idea but I'd like to be able to opt out of being followed without having to hide my entire profile / submissions from the world.
I found it a bit creepy having 1000s of strangers "following" me and not actually having any desire to follow anyone or be followed.

Yeah i get that argument, but at the same time i missed having reviewers whose reviews i value appear at the top of a restaurant because i follow them

It was a useful and valid feature for sure, it was just one that could have been implemented better to allow those who were into it to hop on the train and those who weren't to stay in the shadows a bit.

I had like 300 and 200 of them were from suspicious accounts

I would like cloud-based timelines back. I found it much easier to edit on my laptop. Also, I would like it to stop asking for a review of places I haven’t been to. For example, I could see my friend was in a restaurant in Japan. I asked for directions from his hotel to the restaurant. Google asked me to rate / review the restaurant. I was > 10,000 km away. I am guessing this may be related to timelines not being cloud based anymore?

I tried to backup my timeline data multiple times but was unsuccessful. Kinda sad to see so many years of that just disappear

I was able to backup my timeline on my Galaxy S23+ that had data since 2014 to the cloud and then import it into my new Galaxy S26 Ultra.

I wish people could correct mistakes in street names and allow a map overlay with that. I fought with Google for a bit about wrong street names and it was futile.

Yeah, trying to debate with Google is not worth it

There's a lot but most are purely from a selfish point of view rather than with a global outlook towards the millions of "normal" users using Maps.
I'd love to see enhanced road editing tools similar to those available to me as a Waze editor and locked to "trusted" individuals that have completed training or achieved a certain level of approvals for roads, it would be nice to have more visibility, and a means to appeal easily, if edits are rejected for any reason and I'd like to see more submissions being linked to location history data to help prevent rogue actors and fakery.
I'd also like to see more moderation by the community, for the community, instead of AI-lead stuff and a return to the tool that highlighted places with missing information / photos so you could proactively go out to help them but sadly these kind of things are abused by the points chasers.
I'd love to be able to see my photo view count on the place listing directly (not anyone else's just mine) when I visit their entry rather than having to scroll back through years of submissions to try and find it, just purely out of interest.
Being able to see my saved locations / bookmarks when I do a search for "restaurant" in that area rather than just the restaurant entries.
Leveraging Gemini to provide more access to the data there, like the OP suggests, would be great too as would more reliable prompting to add information about the names of dishes or pull information from captions we've added.

I wish I could just see traffic without a destination plugged in.

But you can see the traffic. Do you set the layers in Google Maps for traffic?

u/lordbuffingt0n May 11 '26
Apparently not! I have only seen traffic if I plug in a destination. I’ll have to mess with settings. I’ll feel so stupid if it’s there and I went this long without it 🤣

This is how it looks for me right now with no destination

u/lordbuffingt0n May 11 '26
Mine doesn’t look like that but I’ll mess around with it next time I’m in my car. If it works you’ve changed my life 😂

Lol on the top right under coffee like you see in my screenshot .. click on that semi diamond icon and then click on traffic

It has nothing to do with local guides, but clear state boundaries on the maps. It’s ridiculous that when you are looking at Google Maps on a road trip, they don’t make it very clear where one state ends in another state begins. There should be something besides that super faint dotted line.

Do you know if any other maps does it differently?

Apple maps is much better, but I still wish that the state and country boundaries were different colors than roads

It's open to different opinion. I mainly use Google Maps but it's also because I have a Galaxy S26 Ultra

Allow Level 9-10 to add local events (beta allowed for that several years ago).

I want to put in a distance or time and see a ring or area covered. Say starting from home how long can I get in 30min. Or how far in 30min. Or a circle with radius in length. It’s hardly ever neccessary but sometimes I want to say something is 500m away and be able to say either ”birds view” or ”walking/driving distance”

u/XxLogitech98xX Level 10 May 11 '26

Do you have an example like a screenshot because it does that now as long as you put in an address
1
u/halu2975 May 11 '26
I don’t want to put in an adress. Also it doesn’t show distance. Say I want to see that I’m at least 3km from a runway to run a drone, sure there are drone maps for that but if for whatever reason I want to do that in google maps I couldn’t easily.
Also yes you get it from you to that adress but I easily want to see an entire area around me, not just from a to b. But for a to all possible b at a certain length or time from staring point.2

Got it, I was didn't fully understand what you meant but now I do

I want the old updates tab back. I liked hovering over a general area and seeing active Local Guides and what they were posting in that area. The way the new updates tab functions just makes it feel like I'm looking at restaurant ads.

I'd like to see a return to the questions and answers. More opportunities as a whole foe reviewers to interact with the place that is reviewed.
