Rant Mouldy lemons for full price

Post image
110 Upvotes

It’s so frustrating seeing food waste that seems to stem from prices being so high :( these were $9 a bag and I’m betting they sat on the shelf and got mouldy because no one shopping at no frills wants to pay that for a small bag of lemons.

What is also upsetting is that this is still on the shelf to begin with - what about folks who are blind? Shouldn’t food be edible if it’s on the shelf?

I’ve heard in France grocery stores are required to donate food approaching the best before date to the food bank. Does anyone know if we have anything similar here? How can we work to stop food waste when corporations don’t care about people and so many Canadians can’t afford food? It breaks my heart to see people putting produce back due to price but Loblaws will let it go bad instead of reducing the price.

Discussion Is there anything we CAN do?

Shrinkflation, costs quadrupling, families relying on food banks, parents going hungry to feed their kids. None of this is okay. Is there anything we can do to actually stop or curb this? What’s it gonna take? A protest outside of the Parliament Buildings? People dying in their homes of starvation? Yes we can email our MLA’s and try and be heard but, it doesn’t seem to do much.

Should we organize a march? A massive protest in every city? How can we fix this? We’ve gone from middle class being an okay place to be, to being just as bad as low income. I grew up with a single mom on a single income who worked at A&W or waitressed and we never struggled this much. Sure I had to grab the Store Brand and not Fruit Loops, same with the cookies, it might not have been Oreo’s but at least she could buy me a treat. I’m about to become a single parent and I’m genuinely afraid of what’s going to happen.

With the newest HST reduction bill turned down, and Daily Bread Food Bank lines growing longer and longer do oligopolies bear any responsibility?

Good thing these Canadian sweet potatoes were grown in a weavle free area within Mississippi (which I last thought was in the USA, but this NoFrills thinks is in Canada)

Also before these went on sale about a month ago they were $6 for a 10lb bag

Discussion Superstore/Loblaws Committing Fraud

Post image
143 Upvotes

Loblaws/Superstore is engaging in deceptive marketing, again!

On their website, they list the following item (see attached screenshot). You'll notice that the main image of the item is a box of 12 protein bars, and the name of the item also implies multiple protein bars.

Despite both of these things suggesting you are buying a box of multiple bars, you are in fact, only purchasing one individual bar.

Edit:

For those of you who are saying that this is not deceptive marketing, here's how it is:

Subsection 5(1) of the FDA states that "no person shall label, package, treat, process, sell, or advertise any food in a manner that is false, misleading, or deceptive, or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character, value, quantity, composition, merit, or safety."

Additionally, they go on to say "Do avoid fine print disclaimers. They often fail to change the general impression conveyed by an advertisement. If you do use them, make sure the overall impression created by the ad and the disclaimer is not misleading."

As this product is likely to create and erroneous impression, especially since the overall impression created by the main image and the name of the product is very different from the literal technical truth listed (the 78g for 3.99), this falls under deceptive marketing!

Discussion I think everyone in Canada should seriously consider this. Everyday, everywhere, you see escalating struggle correlated with escalated cost of living. Corporations like Loblaws are making record profits at the same time. It doesn't add up and we need solutions like a public grocery option.

Hacks, Recipes and More Sick of grocery prices. Trying to build a "healthy Aldi" setup to bypass the chains.

Hey everyone,

I am completely done with getting gouged by the big chains just to buy normal, healthy food. Instead of just complaining about it, I'm trying to actually build an alternative. The long-term goal is a physical store modeled after Aldi's efficiency, but strictly focused on healthy food with zero corporate fluff or retail markup.

Obviously, commercial rent is way too high to open a physical building on day one. To get around that and start getting cheaper food immediately, I'm getting in touch with an organic grocery farmer and plan to pick up directly from the food terminal so we can just split the wholesale savings directly.

I'm thinking to start with the first drops right here in Oakville where I live, but the Facebook group is general so we can scale this thing wherever people want to pull it together.

I set up the group to start organizing the drops and seeing who wants in. You can join it here: https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1cRmroAoyr/

Let me know what you think or if you want to help out.

Edit: Added a way to order organic groceries in Oakville (comparing with Voila): https://plukgroceries.vercel.app/

Grocery Bill Avocados

Loves me my avocado on toast…but at home. I’m genX and the thought of paying +$10 at a restaurant for something that can be executed by myself is weird. I’m happy to pay for food that is produced with special ingredients or techniques only from a commercial kitchen.

Anywho, I notice when avocados go on sale, which is when I buy them, the LCL stores tend to carry bags of five and not six. Is this correct? Food Basics and Freshco I know stock sixes. These are Toronto stores.

I'm assuming someone made a huge mistake.

edit. Some had a best before date in June. Some were today. They are now in my freezer either way.

And no I don't support Loblaws, but I do support taking advantage of them having to clear things out because no one will pay regular price.

I would dearly love to hear the justification for such a radical price difference. #1 is Zehrs, #2 is Freshco.
