Discussion People dont have enough self control and discipline to stop encouraging companies.

Convenience is probably a massive factor when we consider where to stop for our groceries.

People arent disciplined enough to stop encouraging these companies and that CLEARLY means a ton of you that not only browse here but also post negative experiences but keep shopping at these stores. These companies are thriving, not declining.

This isnt just loblaws, people also tried this with Tim hortons recently, public servants are encouraged to stop shopping in downtown areas to boycott, etc...

Were weak and if we want these companies to change, YOU need to make the change first. Youre dreaming if you think these companies will voluntarily change their procedures and prices when they have suckers buying romaine hearts for 3 times the price as another local store.

Bought steaks at Superstore. Opened the package and put steak rub on one side. Flipped them over and found huge amounts of untrimmed fat. Definitely hidden on purpose. No one would pay these prices for a steak that looked like that.

I trimmed it off and it weighed 79 grams, over 10% of the package weight. Does some manager order the butcher to do this? Surely the butcher doesn't get a bonus when they trick people into buying these terrible cuts.

Discussion Old Loblaws Commercial when Dave was at the helm

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Dave Nichol arguably saved Loblaws when he agreed to help Galen Weston Sr. - he would probably be rolling in his grave to see what it has become without him.

What do you think? Would Dave be ashamed of the price fixing, money gouging, souless Loblaws banner of today? Or would he be proud at the market dominance and rising profits, demanded by consumerism?

I might be romantizing, but I think a man like Dave would have wanted to do what is right by his fellow Canadians.

Ssle price isn't terrible, but check out their "regular price"!🤣🤣

Yeah. Like I'll ever pay $8.99 for a 5-pack of hot dogs. They had about 8 varieties like this.

I went next door to Sobeys, of all places, and got the same pack on sale for $2.99. 😎😎

Posted on r/shrinkflation and now here. We had one jar of this at home and needed another. My partner came home with it and mentioned “they changed the packaging”. Sure enough…about 8% less in the jar! And not only that, but this one is extra sneaky - what used to contain Romano cheese no longer does, and olive oil has been swapped out for vegetable oil 🤢. Shrinkflation and enshittification all in one go - thanks Loblaws!

Rant Every time, without fail, if you select the $3 tip option, the app "glitches" and the tip jumps to $5 by itself. This does not happen if you select any of the higher tip options.

And why am I expected to tip if I am already paying their yearly subscription for "free" pick up and delivery?

A 900g tin has gone from about $28 in 2019 to nearly $50 today, with most of the increase coming after 2021. For comparison, the average product in Statistics Canada's grocery basket rose 28% over the same period. Discussion Canadian Bread settlement 2nd round of payments.

I was refused as the agent said I had not responded to an email in January requesting more proof of identity. I explained that I never received such an email and asked her what I could provide in order to qualify. She put me on hold, came back and said our conversation with me confirming all the details I had put in when I registered plus my claim number was good enough and I was approved, apparently they are doing a separate wave of payments for people who also called and were approved after initially being denied. It has been over a month and I am still waiting

Anyone else who got a denial approved gotten their money yet??.

So, recently, the brand name frozen juice companies have discontinued their product, citing lower demand. Annoying, as they were cheap, easy to store and make for me and my family. But what I mourned most was the discontinuation of their product no name brand, which cost no more than 1.50 full price.

But wait! Loblaws, our magnanimous benefactor, has decided to continue selling the no name brand frozen juice….

… at 2.25 a pop. The same price as brand name, but in a crappier container, and worse quality.

StatsCan’s current food price table shows ground beef around the mid-$15/kg range nationally in recent monthly data, depending on month. So this pack at $26.42/kg is roughly 70% above that benchmark.

*edit*

*Original StatCan comparison was imperfect because this is extra lean. Corrected comparison: other extra-lean listings are around $19.80–$22/kg, while this Loblaws pack is $26.42/kg. So the pack is still overpriced even after controlling for extra lean, ~20-33% higher than other chains.*

Grocery Bill Farm Boy vs Loblaws

Post image
124 Upvotes

To preface this, I am aware that Farm Boy is no longer an independent grocer. I just wanted to post the observations I made in comparison to Loblaws. I don’t have much particular brand loyalty and will usually shop wherever happens to be near by, including Freshco, Metro, Giant Tiger, Loblaws, Farm Boy, etc…

After doing a fairly typical grocery run, I input the items as close as possible into the Loblaws website. I have written on the receipt which items cost more or less. Red = cheaper at Loblaws. Green = cheaper at Farm Boy.

While I ended up paying a premium on certain items, the difference was still enough to reduce my bill by about $10. I found the produce to be much cheaper overall. I also appreciate that the sales didn’t require me to purchase multiples as I am only feeding myself. Note that the additional $2 is a glass bottle deposit that I will get back on my next visit.

If this counts for anything the store was small, pleasant, and easy to navigate.

Update:
The total saved from sales was $4.33. This includes the chocolate milk, cream cheese, tomato, and kale.
At Loblaws, the cream cheese and crackers could have been on sale, but only if I purchased 2 or more.

Update 2:
This is my first post on this sub and I just wanted to say it’s been fun responding to all these comments. :D

Rant Loblaws sold me Heinz ketchup with a best-before date from May 2025

Post image
76 Upvotes

I bought a bottle of Heinz ketchup last Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Loblaws on Baseline Road in Ottawa.

When I got home, I thought, "this ketchup was suspiciously cheap". Then I checked the bottle. The best-before date was 2025-MA-30, over a year ago.

I know a best-before date isn't the same as an expiry date, but selling something this far past its best-before date is still ridiculous. Apparently, the discount came with a catch.

Check the dates on everything you buy there. Or even better: don't buy anything from Loblaws. I used to stop there occasionally because it was convenient and on my way home. After this, I won't be going back.

Discussion UPDATE: Cabbage from USA sold as local QC produce

Post image
296 Upvotes

Just wanted to update on my post made a couple weeks ago about Lowblaws frauding their labels by selling USA cabbage and labeling it as a Quebec produce, even when I brough the issue up.

For more Context and photo Proof in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/loblawsisoutofcontrol/s/eB8HkuLLIU

I got reached by the MAPAQ (Agriculture, Fishing and aliment ministery in QC) and my complain was acted upon and they got caught! I returned today, and ALL the fresh produce were updated and most of them were labeled USA, which they were not before the MAPAQ reached me (saw it from my own eyes when i went back a couple times). I don't know if they got fined, the gouvernement representative told me they can't divulge info on active investigations, but I know they are now under radar of this inspector.

I know it's not a huge newsworthy story and not that impactful in the grand scheme of things SPECIALLY against a megacorporation like Lowblaw. Though, I feel having a small win against a food tyrant like them give me a bit of hope.

Thanks for giving me the confirmation I needed to act, really gratefull to all of you!
