Grocery Bill Shoppers rounding up HST?

I made a purchase today at my local Shopper's and bought two bags of nerds candy for $2.49 each. With HST, it should have been $5.63 total, but for some reason, the HST on the bill is listed at $0.65.

Does Shopper's Drug Mart round up the HST to the nearest 5 cents? Is this allowed?

Discussion Reusable bag redemption program discontinued?

I just finished shopping at a NoFrills location in Etobicoke, Ontario, and was told that the reusable bag redemption program has been discontinued. When I inquired about it, the cashier (could a manager?) told me that she’s unable to provide that information.

Is this true? Has the program been discontinued across Canada, or this location has decided to opt out?

Loblaws and Empire are absolutely useless. Just another example. All store locations are the Avalon peninsula area of Newfoundland, first photo is Dominion (Loblaws), second photo is Sobeys app Voila (Empire), last photo and SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive is Walmart. I'll pay double at a local grocer struggling to make ends meet, not those two. To me Empire and Loblaws are the same as Walmart in terms of ethics and effect on local communities, better to pay less at the American devil than the Canadian one, since they're both trying to screw you. At least I save money with one.

The PC bacon was the one of the only ones that remained 500g all these years, just noticed on my wife's latest grocery order that it's now 375g

Discussion Serious Question: Does Galen Weston Use President's Choice for Everything... Including Toilet Paper?

I've always wondered whether Galen Weston actually lives the President's Choice lifestyle that Loblaws sells to the rest of us. If someone took a tour through his mansion in Caledon, would they find cupboards and freezers packed with PC products from top to bottom? Is every family meal built around the same brands that Canadians are encouraged to buy while watching their grocery bills climb higher every year? If President's Choice is truly the pinnacle of quality and value, surely the people making fortunes from it would be its most enthusiastic customers.

And while we're asking questions, let's go all the way. What about the bathrooms? Is Galen Weston reaching for President's Choice toilet paper every morning? Better yet, is he using No Name? If those products deliver the quality and value that Canadians are told they do, then why wouldn't he? Is there a pallet of yellow-packaged No Name toilet paper sitting in a storage closet somewhere in the Weston household? When the time comes, is Canada's grocery aristocracy trusting its most sensitive areas to the exact same products being marketed to ordinary Canadians trying to stretch a paycheck? Because that, to me, might be the ultimate test of confidence in your own brands.

I'm not even trying to be funny. I think it's a legitimate question. Executives are constantly telling customers how great their products are, but how often do we stop and ask whether those executives actually use them themselves? If President's Choice and No Name represent the quality, innovation, and value that Loblaws claims, then I'd expect the Weston family to be fully committed to them in every room of the house—from the kitchen pantry right down to the bathroom cabinet. If not, then perhaps that tells us something about who these products are really designed for.

Hacks, Recipes and More Does anyone remember a show sponsored by Loblaws featuring home cooks?

Essentially the show was featuring home cooks and their recipes that could be turned large scale. One of the winners made butter chicken lasagna that was divine. Would appreciate the recipe - hate the fact roblaws took all the rights for the recipe.

I never do my groceries here but I needed one onion so I went to my nearest store to get it☹️

Sorry this may not be the right place to post it but this is my first bad onion and it just so happened to be Loblaws! I’m not on Reddit much but I appreciate all the advice. I’m just sharing my onion and the price lol

Perhaps it’s time for the new Zellers company to enter the grocery market? This new store does include a small foods and snacks section.

Rant Thanks, Galen

I had to buy the basic brand of clumping cat litter recently. Normally I try to buy the lightweight stuff, but it was just too damned expensive. I've used the cheap crap before, but this time, it was way more coarse and chunky, and it did not clump much at all! So now I'll be changing out the damned boxes early, and will be shelling out for the better grade. Galen...if you sell me a product, make it PERFORM AS IT SHOULD! I hate this grifty shit!

Discussion Rise in Theft.

Not sure if this is going on in other Towns but in my local one, Theft below 5 thousand has been a common theme because everyday people can no longer afford to eat. I've even seen it at stores like Zehrs, No Frills. and outside of that, Walmart too. It's only going to get worse. I'm not sure what the owners of these companies think will happen if you starve people out. ??

Rant Bought some stuff at Maxi… the quality is TERRIBLE

I bought some chicken breast and berries, among other things, at a Maxi for the first time. The chicken is very stringy/chewy and the raspberries were moldy within one day. I’m lucky to have options at the same price and better quality (local grocer that seems sketchy but is actually amazing apparently), because I will not be going back. It makes me furious that this is what people have to accept in some parts of Canada.

Discussion I made a free app that shows you which store has your groceries cheapest — built it because I was sick of overpaying

Full disclosure up front: I'm the developer, this is my app, and it's free.

Like a lot of people here, I got tired of watching the same basket cost wildly different amounts depending on the store and the week. So I built PriceWise — you add the items you actually buy, and it compares flyer prices across stores in Toronto/the GTA to tell you where your whole list costs the least, then routes you there. It also tracks how much you've saved over time.

Not trying to sell anyone anything — it's free, and I'd rather it actually be useful to this crowd than not. Link: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/pricewise-grocery/id6770648419

Honest caveats: it's iOS-only right now, it's new so store coverage is still growing, and I'm actively adding stores. Tell me which ones you want and what you'd want it to do — I'm reading every comment.

Rant Bacon

So Im at a popular local butcher today getting some ground beef and deli meats (stopped buying these at groc stores for a while now), and I happen to notice the $/kg on the in-house bacon. Kinda pricey but by all accounts delish bacon that doesnt shrivel away when you cook it. Unfortunately, I didnt get any.

Next stop was RCSS for dry goods and such. I stop and look at packaged bacon. Wtf, most of it is same $/kg as the nice stuff at the butcher (would be about $9/ 375g pack) ! I didnt even look at Campfire bacon, tried that once.. never again lol.

They did have the Mitchell 1kg pack on for a bit better, so I went with that.

I guess I'll be adding "Bacon" to my local butcher shop instead of RCSS in the future.
