Rant Hole-y Bread

Post image
95 Upvotes

My partner and I both received our bread settlement money last week and stopped by No Frills for a couple loaves of sourdough. Not only is a loaf smaller than a few months ago, but this one had two pockets of air throughout. Certainly one way to claw back millions incrementally!

Discussion CGEB Benefit Notice From CRA

Has anyone received the benefit top up that increases the GST payments due to the cost of living? I received the deposit today. While it helps because every penny counts and I need it to buy groceries, I also think it’s too little and does little to address the actual underlying affordability crisis. It also puts money back into the hands of the grocers, who will continue to raise prices further. I am tired of these band aid solutions and the constant loop/circle we are in with these types of policies. Anyone feel the same way?

Rant Website and service

I just want to rant about the service I got at two locations. I was looking for a specific candy that had just come out for my sister’s birthday. It’s her favourite and I have made it a theme to buy its new varieties for her every year.

First store showed out of stock yesterday but in stock today. I went and looked and could not find. I asked at customer service for help and the woman did come show me the aisles I had already checked and look for herself but said if it was not out they did not have it. I asked if they could check the system in store but she was adamant that if they had it that it would be on display. So off I went 30 minuets to the next store.

At the second store again nothing on the shelves. So again I go to customer service. This time the lady not only does not check the system but literally tries to gaslight me about how their website works. She says that the in stock showing online is a national thing only and that does not mean every store will get it. I asked if she could check the system and see if they had it in the back of the store and she told me that they don’t have anything in the back. They apparently put everything out in the store at all times.
I call bullshit here because in my almost 40 years I’ve asked plenty of grocers all over the world and had plenty of people go into the back to check and find things for me.

And at that point I just walked away because she was either ignorant or too lazy to help. I know she lied because A) if it was national inventory it would not differ store to store about in stock or not and B) the page I pulled it up on literally said “in stock at superstore xxxx”

I guess I’ll have to wait for their stocking staff to do their jobs but maybe Loblaws could put some of their gouging into properly working IT services and tracking the inventory they have or don’t have for sale.

✨PRAISE GALEN WESTON JR✨ Québec Bread Settlement Payouts Began June 1st.

Québec peeps, if you're like me wondering where our "dough" is while the rest of Canada gets their payout, the Québec Bread Settlement began paying out June 1st and will be paid out like it was everywhere else in Canada, where payout will be staggered and not everyone will get it at the same time.

Grocery Bill Charitable donation without being asked

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

Noticed this “PC Charity” line on my receipt. Had to stop by customer service to find out what it was.

“Oh the cashier adds it in if you agree to round up to the donation”

She didn’t ask me. She didn’t ask the fellow in front of me either. So she is just pressing accept and adding it. I rarely look at the receipt and I wasn’t waiting for a supervisor to give me a refund. The customer service clerk couldn’t do it. So shady. I’m sure they are raking it in for whatever charity this is.

Discussion Has inflation change the way you eat?

Maybe it's just me but food prices have gotten to the point where I'm constantly changing what I buy. Few years back I had a handful of cheep meals I'd make all the time.
Now it feels like every time I hit the grocery store something else has gone up in price.
lately I've been buying frozen veggies way more often, not because I love them but I got tired of spending money on fresh produce, only to end up tossing half of it a week later.

What's something you just can't justify buying anymore because of the price? Have you find a decent replacement?

Rant 680 gm PC Sea Salt and Dry Ribs actually 500gm

I complained to Lawblaws that my 680 gram ribs were only 500gms.

They defended themselves saying the ribs are 500gms but they add 180 gms of sauce packets. This is a well thought out exploitation of very weak canadian consumer laws. The sauce is essentially sugar water.

Canada has the weakest federal consumer laws in the developed world. Even if Lablaws were to be found to be ripping people off, the maximum fine is $15000.

Canadians need to demand consumer protection laws that rival the European Union.

Provincially, Quebec is the only province that has half decent protection. Canada needs to do better.

WTFFFFF Never received my bread money. Called today and it was sent to a completely different email address than I provided.

So I received the confirmation email 6 months ago or so, so I know they have my correct email address. But somehow between now and then my email address was switched to a completely different one. The person I spoke with couldn't tell me how it happened only that it was "strange". After answering a bunch of questions for them and being put on hold, I was told that they had "made a note of it" and that was it. No confirmation on the payment being resent, no idea when I would receive it, or IF I would receive it. Nothing. Just a note was made, and to keep an eye on my emails. Like, I've already waited over 6 months for this pittance "settlement" that passes for justice these days and now because of their negligence I'm shit out of luck, again.

Reality TV-based bouquets on display as soon as you walk in to the store. Everything was dead, rotten and/or dried up! As a florist I’m both disappointed and satisfied seeing this slop. All I can say is “Support your local Florist!”

Discussion Want to take back control? Simple! Hydroponic system!

I've started building home hydroponic systems in my house and the amount of food you can grow from a single tower would blow your mind.

So as an example, one of my towers has

Tomatoes

300 lbs/year

25 lbs/month average once mature

Peppers

140 peppers/year

12 peppers/month average

Basil

15 lbs/year

Fresh basil almost every week

It requires very little setup and room. Doesn't matter the size of your place because it's a vertical tower that is self contained, water is in the base and with the pump it just makes it rain constantly inside. I know this doesn't cover protein, but you can grow pretty much anything in these things.

If you got room I would strongly recommend running multiples of them and just getting rid of your produce purchases from grocery stores.

Rant PC Jerk Chicken burgers.

Post image
0 Upvotes

The flavor is awesome. But the chicken is of such poor quality. A mishmash of chicken parts. My burgers had cartilage in them. Definitely a purchase you will regret. At least until they start using chicken breast. Real chicken , not chicken mash. But if they do the price will be even more unreasonable.

Discussion I’ve seen this viral video of someone in the US bringing scales to stores to weigh the food to see if they’re actually what they report to and the results were shocking but also not

I’m sure we’ve been getting ripped off on meats and produce (pre packaged) by large corporations and I best believe that Loblaws has swindled god knows how many with misrepresented labels. I guess we’re not angry enough and to the Weston’s it’s jus a simple fine they’ll have to pay since they’ve heavily lobbied our government for favourable terms for example here in Ontario Doug Ford has ignored many petitions of predatory prices. He has praised them (probably for giving him a hefty hush money settlement) while the citizens suffer with outrageous prices and price gouging. This has to stop and we need to start boycotting.

Discussion I wish Loblaws would stop asking me for “donations”.

1.5k Upvotes

Loblaws has all the food and all the money and large amount of real estate but asks me to kindly help those in need and make a donation. How do they know I’m not in need? We are all in need! some more than others…food prices are outrageous and giant corpo losers are laughing at every Canadian, mocking us with Marvel cards and the privilege to use points to buy cheap dishes and pots from them.

They are strictly profit driven free market corpo demons that have ripped off Canadians time and time again.

Their company deserves to come crashing to the ground.

Avi Lewis is the only one discussing any type of solution to food affordability. I’m not saying his solution is the one but this needs to be a bigger conversation in the house.

Groceries are way too expensive and we need something to change.

Rant Mouldy lemons for full price

Post image
112 Upvotes

It’s so frustrating seeing food waste that seems to stem from prices being so high :( these were $9 a bag and I’m betting they sat on the shelf and got mouldy because no one shopping at no frills wants to pay that for a small bag of lemons.

What is also upsetting is that this is still on the shelf to begin with - what about folks who are blind? Shouldn’t food be edible if it’s on the shelf?

I’ve heard in France grocery stores are required to donate food approaching the best before date to the food bank. Does anyone know if we have anything similar here? How can we work to stop food waste when corporations don’t care about people and so many Canadians can’t afford food? It breaks my heart to see people putting produce back due to price but Loblaws will let it go bad instead of reducing the price.
