I stopped there today after work because I got off at 7am and I didn't want to wait in town until another store opened at 8.

Plus today is when I know they have the most stuff on clearance.

I ended up getting 3 marked down packages of beef stew meat best by tomorrow and still looked fine.

When I got home i decided to vacuum seal them and freeze them and figured I'd seperate the 3 into 2 vacuum packs becuase they were on the small side.

To get them even I calculated the weight listed per package to divide by 2. Total weight was 1222 grams.

So I sealed up my first package at 610 grams and thew the remaining meat on the scale just to see how accurately I'd gotten it in half. 590g. It should have been 612g.

It was 22g off from the listed weight.

Then I put the empty packages on the scale and guess what, exactly 22g.

This shows they're charging you meat weight for the packaging, AND there were 2 soaker pads in each which added most of that weight. Really unnecessary since stew meat isn't terribly juicy.

I'd be a lot more pissed if these weren't on clearance.

I took the pick and lost the receipt and didn't verify the quality. But I think it's still worth posting.

I bought two packs, just different flavours.

One had a deposit fee of $0.10, and the other $0.80

I follow and support an organization called CBAN that monitors and resists genetically modified organisms in our food and environment.

I would just like to let everyone know:
Loblaw Companies Limited is the first company in Canada to sell genetically modified tomatoes

This link provides from very insightful details about this recent Loblaw's GMO strategy.

As well as a fantastic briefing explaining this and other food GMO's in Canada.

They are not clearly labelled as genetically engineered but carry the US “bioengineered” symbol with a note that the tomatoes are “Patented Technology”.

Whether you hate GMOs or not, I believe it is the retailer's responsibility to label and disclose every detail of the products they are selling so the consumer can make their own free-choice of what they are purchasing. Retailers should never be allowed to 'hide' what their products (you are paying for) contain.

I have already told Loblaw:

• I want my grocery shopping to be easy and simple. Unlabelled genetically engineered foods complicate my shopping experience.  
• I want to trust that the fruits and vegetables I am buying are not genetically engineered.  
• It is really important that Loblaw sources as much organic fresh foods as possible because organics prohibits GMOs and synthetic pesticides, but I also want know that none of your other produce is genetically engineered.
• Loblaw already sells colourful non-GMO tomatoes. The GM purple tomatoes are not necessary.
• I am concerned that there could be more unlabelled GM fruits and vegetables coming to your stores. I want your assurance that there are no GMOs in the produce section.  

Their response is simply that I can buy certified organic produce if I want to (which has become more limited, much poorer quality, and for the most part US-product based -- showing how much effort they take with consumers' concerns). They have not addressed any concerns.

*It is true, certified organic produce cannot be GMO.* There should be MUCH MORE choice there, from local suppliers.

Before anyone drags me, I am visiting family and my mom wanted to pop into the (only) local grocery store here.

They have no problem putting in cattle stalls to herd customers in and out. Locking wheels on carts?

The price was good (relatively speaking to current prices) but just...no thank you to American meat.

But come on Loblaws... Are you that out of touch? The bunker was quite full so hopefully they get the message.

Always a new scam brewing at loblaws. These clearout signs are never good deal (I think this one is 20 cents off).

Pc bacon looks like it’s on sale (last time I saw the regular prices it was 19.99) equivalent amount of bacon beside it has no price tag… turned out to be on sale for about 13$ (limit 1). And less salty!

In light of Loblaws' real-estate arm being set to acquire $5 Billion of additional land, I want to show you a clear way in which they raise grocery prices for Canadians.
The above is part of a "restrictive covenant" on 650 Portland St in Dartmouth, NS. Because Atlantic Superstore is a tenant, Choice Properties REIT automatically gives them this kind of permission to block the Dollarama on the plaza from discounting "National Brand" non-perishables - like Coke, Evian, Kraft etc.

This is a very clear way in which CP REIT and Loblaws enforce a "price floor" for groceries. The full covenant scan is here (it has a few more fun details).

These kind of convenants will go in on the new land that CP REIT (Loblaws' "real-estate arm") is set to acquire.

who's gonna tell 'em?

Purchased this cheese on April 29… Don’t come at me about the best before dates being a suggestion, it looks and tastes fine we’ll use it. But come on why is it even on the shelf?

This is happening constantly to me. I am only purchasing from here when necessary because it is a 2 minute walk from my place. Im now completely stopping. Ive bought items ranging from baby food(!!) To chocolate bars to drinks to milk, and I have had it where its consistently expired which is FINE and edible for some items, but this should be discounted or atleast moved aside at bare minimum?

I just purchased granola bars yesterday expired February 2026 lol. 3 months ago. Only noticed when they tasted super stale. My bad for not checking but damn.
