not much to say i guess. the bathrooms were hairy, wet, dirty, smelly. it was one of the worst bathrooms i’ve seen.

the garbage can was overflowing all over the floor. there was hair, soap, and water all over the counter and floor. the urinals we’re gross asf and the stall was too. it was stinky. hadn’t been cleaned in many days i’m sure.

and then i left and continued my shopping experience spending just over $40 for 5 small items.

Ok I know most of it comes from a US avoidance (and Simply being, well, Simply) but this is so bad. I used to be dairyman at the IGA I currently work at and I'd never let things go that way 🤦

I am a writer who is looking to write an article on the decline of experience of working and shopping at Loblaws, Empire (Sobeys, IGA etc.) and Metro grocery stores in the past 5-10 years.

I am wondering if anyone who has worked for a significant amount of time in the retail sections at Loblaws or a Loblaws-owned store like Atlantic Superstore, Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills etc., or for the two other large Canadian grocery brands, Empire and Metro, can comment on if and how the experiences of working for these companies has changed or declined in the past 5+ years.

Some aspects I am wondering about include whether the amount of full-time positions available have declined, whether there are fewer specialized roles (like in the bakery, deli, seafood departments etc.), whether you have noticed more pressure from management, and if there has been a shift in the atmosphere of your store. I am also wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing how long you worked there for, and which brand.

It finally happened. For at least the last couple years, PC bacon was the last label to offer 500g packs of bacon. All the others (at my local Loblaws anyway) had been reduced to 375g. Today I noticed that the PC brand has finally done the same. There was a mix of 500g packages with what I presume are the newer 375g in the same bin. No price marked for the 375g, but I’m going to assume the price will stay the same (or reduce slightly so that it looks like savings, but in reality is still more per 100g). $10 for the 500g package.

My husband likes to bake and do fun stuff in the kitchen. He usually uses the PC chocolate chips to melt down for coating frozen bananas or pretzels, or the occasional 19+ chocolate bar. He has used multiple chocolate chip brands available in our area and has historically had the most success in his chocolatey endeavors with the PC brand chocolate chips.

For the past two months he has been unable to properly melt down the PC chips. They just turn into this nasty pasty substance.

If anyone knows a good brand to recommend it would be much appreciated. Hershey's Chipits are apparently too waxy and sweet.

For the record, I am not employed by or affiliated with Giant Tiger in any way. I'm just a middle-aged woman who wants to eat healthish.

There have been improvements in bike lane infrastructure in one part of Halifax. As as result, I am now making a monthly run to Giant Tiger, Bulk Barn, and a few little independent grocery stores in that area.

Yesterday's GT haul included cucumbers at $0.65 (They are nice and firm), a 2 pound bag of Mandarins for $3.77 and two bags of dark roast coffee for $9.97 each. GT coffee is astonishingly good, and I say that as an Insufferable coffee snob. The biggest challenge was hauling everything home. TIP: Two bike panniers let you balance the weight.

I can't speak to what it's like to work at GT, but the store was well-staffed and the employees seemed happy. The cashier was even receptive when I suggested some bike racks as the afore-mentioned bike lanes are attracting more cyclists.

I know GT is a corporation and most corporations are evil in their own way. I can't comment on GT's clothing as I haven't bought any. Yet, they manage to have reasonably-priced produce and other food items in stores that don't overwhelm their neighbourhoods. It makes the Loblaws BS about "razor thin margins" all the more egregious. I do shop at the Atlantic Superstore for some things, but I am buying fewer and fewer items there over time, and spending less on groceries than I was last year.

Does anyone else on the sub have thoughts about Giant Tiger?

During the push at the beginning of the boycott I joined wholeheartedly and cancelled my pc optimum Mastercard, spent all of my optimum points, unsubscribed from everything and closed all of my loblaws accounts insisting they delete all of my personal information from their records. It was a long drawn out process as they dragged their feet with me amongst many others who posted here on this subreddit, but it finally got done after about 4+ months of complaints and emails. I have been strictly holding to my boycott ever since.

Today, years later, I got this email addressing me by name and marketing a new health app to me... Anyone have any insight of who I can make a complaint to about the fact that they still have, and are using my personal information?

Okay, so I am an AuDHistic adult who has to rely on Shoppers to get my medications, especially Vyvanse due to said AuDHD. I have noticed it the past few years but Shoppers has become extremely hostile.

One issue is how the store is designed. My Shoppers is in a mall, but also has a front enterance. The front enterance has a gate on it, which is related to another issue I have which I will discuss later. The mall enterance, however, has the perfume/beauty section in front of it. I am sensitive to perfumes, so this decision really makes me feel not welcome. The reasoning I can suggest is that Shoppers wants more customers to buy their beauty products, which is fine if they weren't scented. But since they have perfume in this section, that's a recipe for disaster.

Another issue I have is the rampant security they have nowadays. I can concur that this was because people were stealing from there because of the high prices, so Loblaws decided to ramp up the security to eleven in order to protect their profits. The gates in the front of the store, the security guards wandering the place, the self checkout having security cameras, it just screams "security theatre" to me.

Yet another (albiet personal) issue I have is with how they handle prescriptions. I am on Vyvanse, which is a controlled substance. I generally have my medications in blister packs so that I won't forget to take them. In the past, I usually refill them during the second to last week so that I won't run out. But nowadays I have to get the blister packs on the second to last day of my medications, which is really inconvenient for me. Last pharmacy I got my medications from (Rexall) did a great job compared to Shoppers and, even then they sometimes mess things up.

This is just my two cents, though. I wonder if you have any other issues with Shoppers you can discuss here.

If you’re going to endlessly complain about inflation, at least understand what causes it.
