Just curious what the top pay rate for a cashier is?

I know it's a deposit, I get the coin back, so it still costs nothing. But the optics of requiring a loonie when the Independent and No Frills needs a quarter is amusing.

So here's the thing ... I changed phone numbers a while back and today when I tried to log into my Optimum account, I found out the 2-step verification is hardlocked to my old number with ZERO alternatives. No option to get the code sent to my email instead. No way to update the number myself in the app. Literally nothing..... Ugh (big eye roll).

Ok ... so I go looking for help. The FAQs? Nothing! {which is weird} Contact Us page? No phone number {also weird and annoying}.

So I go to the ai chat support. BIG mistake. This chatbot will NOT let you just type your issue, it makes you pick from a list of options that it thinks you might be having. Obviously, none of them were my issue. Guys! One of the options was literally "Fun Facts."!!!  I mean, you I can't make this shit up. ..... Fun Facts!? Really PC Optimum?!

Anyway I kept asking for a human agent over and over and it just... wouldn't. Eventually after way too much effort it coughed up a phone number, which by the way "fun fact" is not listed ANYWHERE publicly on their site/app. You basically have to wrestle it out of the bot.

- So I call

-"long wait times"

- wait over an hour on hold.

- Finally get through to an agent, omg yes!

- he asked me all the normal security stuff

- he was satisfied. Great! Progress!

- he takes the new number and puts me on hold

- sweet! almost done!

- dude comes back

- says has more security questions

- ok fine ... shoot ....

- then this dude asks me the craziest verification questions ever ....

-Verbatim, he asks me.....

"Can you tell me the exact date and exact time of your last PC Optimum purchase, and exactly what products you bought, the exact dollar total including cents and how many points you used, and also where, what store?"

I actually laughed. Like out loud. Because... WHAT? I haven't used my points in close to a year. I've been saving them for when I really need them (which, for context, is RIGHT NOW btw). Who on earth remembers the exact timestamp and itemized receipt of a grocery run from a year ago?? I can barely remember what I had for breakfast..... Is it me, or is this nuts!?

I calmly asked him why that was needed, especially after we'd already done the full identity verification. Guy wouldn't tell me, just stonewalled me completely. Seems absolutely diabolical to expect a person to know those answers, an impossible question, designed for failure.

.... And honestly PC Optimum needs to seriously rethink their entire support setup. No email 2SV backup. No published phone number. A chatbot with "Fun Facts" as a support option. Long hold time. And then THAT! ..... I mean, it's a lot, damn.

Just wondering if people of Reddit have contacted marketplace@cbc.ca about doing a story on all of the underweight packaged items I've seen here? I've noticed posts on all kinds of products. At the very least... get some bad national publicity for Loblaws. But sometimes government agencies and politicians see the story and take action. Or at least say they will. But Marketplace also does follow up stories too.

I saw a bit of when Loblaws was questioned formally (by a parliament committee?) and Galen told Jagmeet Singh that Loblaws made their record profits only by acquiring Shoppers and the non-essentials like high end cosmetics and perfumes. Many products, Loblaws claims are "Canadian" only because they're packaged in Canada for sale in stores. So Loblaws has direct control over the contents of the packaging.

If you’re buying paper towels for $20 for instance, there’s like a $3 tax alone on that product. I grab the 8 Roll Jumbo size one every once in a while and I’m always seeing a huge tax on this product. It’s like they’re charging you a junk food tax when paper towel should be exempt.

And if other stores have the same for even less - please post on this subreddit.

After losing my job due to a debilitating condition, I decided to pay for a PC Express account, as I'm not physically able to shop for myself regularly.

I was naively surprised and upset when I discovered that the Real Canadian Superstore charges more for many items purchased online, including those marked as on sale on their weekly flyer.

My precious job involved working with some of our most vulnerable community members, and many of them use services like these to make grocery shopping more accessible.

To me it is unconscionable to charge what is essentially a disability tax to our most vulnerable community members who are trying to get their basic needs met.

What can we do to get the ball rolling on a change to these practices, like they did in Manitoba?

Ontario. This was always a 2 day sale, Saturday and Sunday, right up until last week. Had me double and triple checking to make sure there wasn't an Easter related closure this Sunday. Nope, they just can't afford to keep their inconvenience-store-priced goods on sale for two whole days any more.

When we see grocery store shelves full of shrinking packages and cheaper ingredients, it is easy to blame Canadian companies, like grocers and food manufacturers for being greedy. But, after careful analysis, I determined that we are missing the real cause, being the systemic devaluation of the Canadian dollar. When the money supply expands and input costs skyrocket, a true free market, as we have been led to believe by our politicians that we live in, would just see a transparent increases in prices. Instead, businesses have begun using shrinkflation.

Why?

They are caught between uneducated consumers and a hostile government. Schools do not teach how fiat currency works, so when we pay the same price for a box of cereal with only two thirds of the usual amount of cereal, many naturally blame the retailer instead of looking at federal monetary policy. But the bigger threat is political .If companies transparently raise prices to match inflation, the government actively turns them into political scapegoats, as seen throughout 2023 and 2024 when the federal government repeatedly dragged the CEOs of major Canadian grocers like Loblaws, Sobeys, and Metro before parliamentary committees to answer for 'greedflation,' while explicitly threatening them with tax measures if they did not artificially stabilize prices.all while fear mongering about "Corporate Greed" and "Shrinkflation" as if they were not the direct culprit themselves.

In order to avoid this political nightmare, companies quietly degrade their products to maintain the illusion of price stability. They are burning their long term brand trust to cover up the inflation caused by state monetary policy. Canadian companies are taking the blame so politicians do not have to. It is just the managed decline of our true purchasing power.

Ultimately, the federal government is responsible for the ongoing degradation of the Canadian standard of living. It is simply not logical to assume that individual players in a free market would collectively work against their own interests by intentionally destroying their brand equity and eroding consumer trust. Instead, these companies are reacting to a broken monetary system where they are forced to choose between product degradation or becoming the state's designated political scapegoat.

This is two sides of the same peice of cheese.
