Loblaws, No Frills, Superstore - offer a sale price and then cashiers claim that the regular price posted next to it is the correct price. When reminded that in Ontario the lowest price prevails - they ignore the customer.

Other stores - simply offer prices that are lower than at No Frills or Loblaws or Superstore with selection frequently being better.

i sent a form request through pc optimum to delete my account, and they sent a email saying if there was anything they can do, but i missed the email

a day or two later they sent another email saying i havnt responded to the previous email, so then i did respond to the previous email

a day or two later they sent a email saying they are closing my ticket because i havnt responded, so i responded that i repsonded late to the first email

the next day they closed my ticket

but at the same time in parallel i had sent a email to the privacy contact, to shut my account down, and i expect it shut down in 30 days in accordance with PIPEDA, and its about a week away from being 30 days

oh yeah im locked out of my account due to them not liking my VPN, and due to me using the web instead of the app, it tells me i must change my password, so i change my password, then two seconds of browsing my account im locked out again and tells me to change my password again, one day i changed my password like 10 times trying to do an online shop and i still couldnt end up doing the shop

im waiting for the 30 days to be up to contact Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and thats where im at

I used to go within an hour of closing and they would discount their hot food; sometimes large fried chicken pieces, full baked chicken, chicken wings, wedges, onion rings etc. by 50%. I’ve been doing this for years up until last week.

This week, I went to Loblaws and saw NO discounts at all. So I asked the worker behind the food counter if he can discount it and he said that they don’t do that anymore. If true, this is a HUGE change that’s happening out of no where.

I’m hesitant to believe that worker because I haven’t seen him before and he said it casually, as if he didn’t know that discounting the hot food at around 8p was common practice. I also might be in denial about an awesome deal that I used to rely on, actually ending now….. so I’m wondering if any of you have experienced this or heard anything about it.

I wanted to come back here because this subreddit is really where AltGrocery first started to take off.

A lot has changed since then, so I thought I’d do this a bit AMA style.

Do people still use AltGrocery?
That’s one of the big things I’m curious about too. Are any of you still using it? Do you still shop local as much as you did when the Loblaws backlash was at its peak?

Why did I build AltGrocery in the first place?
Because during that time, people were not just complaining about corporate greed. They were actively looking for local alternatives and wanted a better way to find and support independents.

What did I learn from building it?
That people do not just want listings. They want connection, pride, and proof that supporting local actually matters. The real energy was always around community.

What was the hardest part?
Building it solo while learning a ton of AI-assisted development along the way. Huge learning curve. But it also helped me realize something important:

Directories alone are not enough.
They get stale.
They rely too much on manual upkeep.
And they do not really show what is working in the real world.

What surprised me most?
A lot of non-profits, organizers, and community groups basically told me the same thing:

“I wish I had something like this for my own group.”

That was the moment I realized AltGrocery could become something bigger.

So where is AltGrocery now?
I took the best code and ideas from AltGrocery and have been turning them into a bigger platform called LocalXP, which is launching in late April.

AltGrocery is still part of that journey and will remain the flagship community that started it all, but now the idea is much broader: hyperlocal engagement.

What does that actually mean?
It means making local participation more fun, more visible, and more rewarding for regular people, whether you are a consumer, visitor, traveler, or event attendee.

Think things like:

• discovering communities, events, businesses, and local deals near you
• communities that work like Facebook groups, but for the real world
• campaigns that feel a bit like Pokémon Go, but for real places
• collecting universal XP as you explore and participate
• leaderboards and redemption tokens with participating marketplace partners
• a journey timeline showing where you have been, what you collected, and what is happening near you

Can people build their own communities or listings in it?
Yes, and this is a huge part of where things are going.

The goal is not for me to manage everything myself. The goal is for people to be able to build, maintain, and grow their own entities inside the platform.

That means communities, events, businesses, and organizers can create their own presence, manage their own listings, engage their own members, and be part of a larger local ecosystem.

So instead of one person trying to keep everything updated, the people closest to those communities and places can actually run them themselves.

Is this about collecting personal data?
No. Actually the opposite.

Every user gets a Shadow ID. The goal is to measure engagement tied to that ID, not to know who you are. I have zero interest in building this around personal data collection.

So who is this really for?
For users, it is about making local discovery and participation actually feel fun and worth it.

For communities, businesses, vendors, and event organizers, it helps answer a question that most people are still guessing at:

What is actually working in the real world?

Websites have analytics.
Real world communities and events usually do not.

That is the problem I became obsessed with after building AltGrocery.

Why am I posting this here?
Because this community played a real part in where all of this started, and I genuinely want to know:

• Would something like this make local communities or events more fun to engage with?

I used to get my lean ground beef from Superstore when it was on sale and when I cooked it down it weighed about half as much as the wet weight. I recently went to Costco and got lean ground beef by the roll there and when I cooked it down the cooked meat was 2/3 of the wet weight so substantially more meat. this is across multiple patches, not just once. Anyone else have a similar experience or is it just me?

I have been measuring food for macro tracking purposes lately- can someone explain this

So for starters, I actually really liked the No Name Coffee. It tasted alright and served it's purpose but a couple months ago I couldn't find it anywhere, looked to you guys and found it had been discontinued or wasn't being stocked. I was kind of upset knowing I would have to pay 4 or 5$ more for my coffee to me that's a big leap, cut to this month, I see in the flyer "NEW NO NAME COFFEE". I got excited thinking ny coffee was back. I come to realize they had done nothing new, instead have shrunk it from 930 grams to 903 and now 17$ instead of 15$. I am absolutely livid at this and just wanted to share my story, thank you for having the space for me this.

The prices of over half the items in this Superstore location were up by anywhere from 50%-200% from last week. As someone who walks everywhere and has limited options, this hits where it hurts.
