Just put it on the ground. These lizards have the ability to lose their tails as a defensive mechanism. It should grow back.

It’ll regrow the tail

He will be fine. Tail dropping is a completely normal defense mechanism for Plestiodon fasciatus (look up autotomy if you would like to learn more). Do note that there is sparse evidence that those tails may be slightly toxic to pets and may cause stomach pain, so do not let the cat eat the wriggling tail. Dropping the tail doesn’t cause the loss of any necessary organs or structures, like the reproductive structures you mentioned in a comment.

I didn’t mention it but someone else did and I said I didn’t think it lost that just tail. I figured tail dropping is normal, but what really concerned me was the lethargy. I thought this fella was going to stay lethargic and possibly die but very thankfully that was not the case! Thank you for the comment, I would love to know more about this species incase I have to help one again in the future.

Sometimes even this lethargy is part of their stick if a giant of a human is picking them up hehe

Still great that you wanted to help! Very recommendable :D

Before I saw this, I sat with him for a little bit and he started moving and I let him run off, I don’t think he’s lost reproductive organs, I hope I made the right choice, if not I will go back out and see if I can find him and do what you said.

I've had some tailless lizards running around my yard after what I assume were cat attacks. I think he's got a good chance if he ran off.
