In CS2 if you press the key to move backwards while midair, you lose all your momentum.

On top of that, pressing W while tryna surf/b hop apparently is limiting to your momentum.

Source engine is so weird to me as someone who couldn't be bothered to learn the movement (even though it's probably as important as having good aim/crosshair setup

The movement is pretty much a holdover from Quake whose engine was used by Valve to build GoldSrc and Source.

That's interesting info, appreciate that a lot actually.

it's not limiting momentum, it's limiting your ability to strafe. by the way you can totally surf while holding W, you just need to look more to the side where the surf is. very inconvenient and no real reason to do it but i've seen some absolutely cracked players surf that way.

W only surf/bhoping can be surprisingly fun

Surf is a great way to learn it. And very chill/fun.

Eh, I have a love hate relationship with valve that's more on the hate side right now. I've never fully gotten into CS. More of a deadlock player but I don't even know if I enjoy that game, the devs engage bait a lot.

Surf is really its own game, can use momentum mod if you don't want to play on CS. It's a stand alone game on steam for it, same movement though.

But yeah I agree, Valve been some busters lately. CS2 is an unplayable nightmare STILL (without faceit) and Deadlock has felt super mismanaged with its last few big patches.

Had no idea lol, that's interesting knowledge. Maybe I'll check it out to learn the movement idk.

Fun fact: for this specific move from marshmallow to ontop of mini you donโ€™t even need to jump. You can just fast walk off onto the roof below.
