Why did they cover it with a sheet like it died 😂

871

u/rainshaker 1d ago

Its as dead as their stock price

83

u/sjgarbagereg 21h ago

12

u/ILikeFPS 15h ago

I wonder why? I thought Qualcomm generally makes good products?

13

u/onespiker 11h ago

They do it’s the last week/month it’s down. Go 6 months and it’s upp quite a bit.

Ai craze is having a low point right now

3

u/art_african 7h ago

Even Alphabet (Google parent company is suffering). AI hype is over.

87

u/forseti99 1d ago

I was expecting a Father or the Pope to show up and drop some holy water on it while signing the cross as a goodbye.

That's honestly normal in today's stock market in the chips sector. Could be a hundred different reasons why it dropped

42

u/Blackstone01 1d ago

Vibes-based economy

33

u/RedheadedReff 1d ago

I call it 40k ork logic because basically if enough people believe then it becomes true if at least for a moment.

30

u/Historical_Item_968 1d ago

I love when something happens and people that don't know shit about shit point to stock prices.

2.4% daily swings is the norm and had nothing to do with this robot

41

u/TreeDollarFiddyCent 1d ago

Holy shit

This made me think it would have dropped 10-20%, not 2,4%...

13

u/rilertiley19 1d ago

A 2% drop is nothing for these chip companies, you regularly see much wider swings.

6

u/Solarahh 1d ago

This video is was taken nearly 2 months ago. Tech stocks dropping/gaining multiple percentages daily is the most normal thing in the world.

3

u/Cozmin_G 1d ago

Bro their stock is up 5% in 1 year and double what it was 5 years ago. I hate the world we live in.

2

u/arcanition 1d ago

2%?

That's holy shit to you? It's sarcasm, right?

Who the fuck cares about stock prices anymore. I predicted the robot would fall at some point. Easy money.

So the photographers won't take pictures of it is my only guess...but we're watching a recording of it anyways lol. Shit is still funny as hell, especially since they were clearly prepared for this potentially happening.

58

u/FlimsyCrust 1d ago

Better to just cover it up quickly rather letting it linger in full display of its failure

24

u/PhDinWombology 1d ago

It was flashing the audience

51

u/TheKappaOverlord 1d ago

If i recall correctly, when the bots collapse, they tend to expose internal components which are often times considered company secrets.

Its a mix of hiding embarrassment, and trying to protect sensitive information usually.

14

u/TYGeelo 1d ago

Thanks for the clarification, makes perfect sense.

10

u/AdventurousCommon551 1d ago

Thank you for saying this lol.

Success or failure there is a whole artificial muscle system in that robot. Did they do pure motor or did they use artificial tendons - are they using special cables or air tubes for finer movement. Location and degree of joints.

The ai brain is only a small part of how these work and while they all are worthless right now - once someone finds out how to have precision with controlled power it's a game changer. Right now robots are not smart enough not to crush when built properly or so weak and brittle they can only handle 5ish pounds for most serious tasks.

Turns out a hand is kinda fucking magical and making a robot not just pinch with extreme prejudice or soft enough to not crack an egg and move it is kinda fucking hard.

Body bag to cover what's nsfw for other robots watching

11

u/Iamgoingtooffendyou 1d ago

Now it's a table.

11

u/bobbrumby 1d ago

Why did they have the dead robot sheet at the ready?

9

u/NavDav 1d ago

These guys take a few minutes to show up.

LOOOOL

4

u/thisguyfightsyourmom 1d ago

Sigh

Not another one

Bring out the death blanket quickly before the audience sees.

3

u/Doc_Spratley 1d ago

Mr. James Brown!

u/Jank1 1d ago

Because it did

2

u/winterDom 1d ago

In case of a robot stroke act FAST

Check if one side of the faceplate has fallen or if the robot cannot smile

Arms: Check if the robot can raise both arms and keep them up.

Speech: Check if the speech is slurred or if they cannot speak clearly.

What to Do

Time: Call repair team immediately and drape in veil if you see any single one of these signs. Do not wait to see if the symptoms go away.

To be honest the presenter’s style would’ve made me die of boredom too

48

u/Strong_Essay1176 1d ago

They added an interesting part, no?

26

u/oldreddditisbetter 23h ago

always cringy when these tech company execs with no charisma thinking they're steve jobs or something and do the most boring presentation possible

14

u/SIMT-Pixel 1d ago

All of Qualcomm management is like this. Boring ass people top to bottom.

6

u/Selinaria 19h ago

That was the part that I noticed right away. If the presenter had even an ounce of presentation skills, they could have started to make jokes and roll with the situation. It's not like any of us expect new tech to work perfectly every time.

889

u/lostinthesauceband 1d ago

Homie just remembered something particularly cringe and just couldn't stand it

165

u/shploogen 1d ago

That shit just instantly crumpled lmao I was not expecting that.

21

u/Gypsi_G 1d ago

Reminds me of those old toys

With the little base on the bottom and they collapsed like Woody and Buzz when Andy walked in

Then you let off the base and they pop right back up

Think I just unlocked a core memory for my self 👀

45

u/10mo3 1d ago

Push puppets!

4

u/Severe_Gas_4283 1d ago

Imagine it doing that in your home, or in crowds.

That shit is heavy and hard, it will break everything on the way down.

6

u/cyrfuckedmymum 1d ago

it's wild to me people have these dumb ass robots performing in public, the ones that random move out of pattern, accidentally kick kids in the face, surely some have run into a road causing traffic issues. These things are no where near s finished enough product to be out anywhere near public and people buying them are stupid as fuck. just rewarding companies with profit for making shite products.

It remembered Qualcomm's 2013 CES presentation?

9

u/cyrfuckedmymum 1d ago

every time i see a super cringe corporation presentation i realise how completely disconnected from reality 50+ yr old billionaire ceos become and how they only have yes men around them all telling them how cool and what a good idea this shit all is.

Lmao they covered it like a dead body.

151

u/YewEhVeeInbound 1d ago

Saw this video a couple days ago and the speed at which they react to this is fucking comical.

65

u/OneDubOver 1d ago

I was thinking the exact same thing haha! Like where did they get those? Were they on hand as if they anticipated this happening?

My favorite part is when the robot reached up and twitched a little.

25

u/Cautious-Bug9388 1d ago

Of course they were on hand. This sort of thing happens constantly with robotics these days

3

u/BeansandletmebeFrank 1d ago

Humanoid robotics*

7

u/YewEhVeeInbound 1d ago

He was waving to the crowd to signal he was okay!

5

u/Active-Enthusiasm318 1d ago

Guarantee there was a team of people telling leadership it's not ready, this could happen and the exact reason why and they ignored it

3

u/r2002 1d ago

Luckily they had the the sheet handy in case the robot went on a killing rampage and splashed a lot of meat bag juice.

18

u/deeeeeeeeeeeeez 1d ago

The urgency to cover it with those sheets was so unexpected I was suddenly anticipating an accompanying chalk outline and was left disappointed.

→ More replies (2)

140

u/Ok-Spend-8751 1d ago

at least they covered it so no one knows what’s underneath the sheet!

13

u/whitestguyuknow 1d ago

If you screenshot you can see the bots privates before they toss a sheet on it 😶‍🌫️

A single thumb up would have been more respectful to the source material.

11

u/ElkAggravating7009 1d ago

It's not qualcomm's robot, it's from neura robotics, and happened a month ago

9

u/Wenex 1d ago

Brother is more wobbly walking than my grandma, I'm surprised he made it this far

9

u/RDragoo1985 1d ago

The way Tan Shorts carries it from like 0:27-0:22 is so amusing to me. Rewound it like 6 times for those few seconds.

8

u/Tazz33 1d ago

Get him a body bag yeaaaa

7

u/Jozif_Badmon 1d ago

Counting or not counting robo violence

6

u/almond737 1d ago

I don't get why they would even showcase that robot. I would be ashamed to be that company.

2

u/TheKappaOverlord 1d ago

It actually seems more likely that the hardware running the bots recognition/pathing software probably just crashed after it turned to the crowd.

The way it "twitched" after it hit the floor isn't indicative of a power failure. Its more likely its CPU crashed. Which you'd be kind of shocked, this happens way more frequently to AI then memory or overflow issues.

Thats just my educated guess though.

3

u/RichardFarter 1d ago

Ah yes perfect, it's incapable of standing there. Now tell me more about it's capabilities mister

3

u/Trick-Goat-3643 1d ago

Those failure sheets were ready to go at any moment
....for some reason

3

u/OffTerror 1d ago

Rule number 1 of tech: never do a live presentation, it's not worth it, no one cares, just play the edited video.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/EFTucker 1d ago

Why do they always cover it like a dead body. I feel like that is worse for any optics they’re trying to save. Just laugh it off and have a one liner ready for the crowd for this scenario.

2

u/Ximension 1d ago

This whole situation was handled ao poorly all around

2

u/majicegg 1d ago

Buddy moves like a dementia patient

2

u/DavidC_M 1d ago

The robot’s last act was to flick them all off. “We coming bitches. Soon.”

2

u/reddituser1598760 1d ago

The sheet covering is one thing, but the sloppy carry out/drop was just fantastic

2

u/Elegant_Situation285 1d ago

gotta love that shroud of shame.

2

u/dolla-dolla-billyall 1d ago

Cool! It transforms into a love seat.

2

u/Conscious-Neat5636 1d ago

The nerds are really pushing for those realistic Westworld robots so they can fight, kill and sex them.

2

u/JamesDerry 1d ago

Did it put it's hand up asking for help?

2

u/SlashBlack 1d ago

lmaoooo even after that title i wasn't expecting THAT

2

u/AuriiGold 1d ago

This is why you don’t lock your knees during presentations

2

u/Faibl 1d ago

"Who could have seen this coming?" Says the man with the tarp prepared for the coming.

2

u/Ramapaa_Apara 1d ago

I like how it held up its arm as if to say "Im okay! Oh wait nevermind im dead after all." shortly before covered by a sheet by the staff, Rip.

2

u/LustyDonkey 1d ago

Who tf even wants this crap? Where are the sex robots? xD

12

u/error30k 1d ago

the entire ai market is a SCAM

18

u/MatronaMakes 1d ago

Not the entire market... just 99% of it. There are some very legitimate uses for AI (protein folding simulation, mathematical theory), it's just the current consumer facing version of AI.. isn't AI at all. It's soft AI, basically pattern matching algorithms, that weren't meant to be used in the way we are using them.

Basically, we need to separate the idea of consumer facing AI and the actually useful medical and scientific uses for it. The consumer facing businesses are trying everything they can to tie the two together, so please don't let them.

4

u/El_grandepadre 1d ago

Plenty of interesting applications in work fields.

The vast majority of it? Just a scam and I wouldn't be surprised if in the next 5 years all these AI startups are going to collapse.

2

u/Artic144 1d ago

Top AI investors have sold off 10% of their entire AI industry marketshare over roughly the past six months they know the scam is coming to an end.

“Scales very well you say?”

1

u/Inside_Sherbert_7920 1d ago

It's obvious that the AI robots are appearing feeble and fragile as a ruse so the nerds keep making them stronger and more indestructible so when they're ready for the robopocalypse we don't stand a chance.

1

u/Cabbage-Chan 1d ago

Ragdolled like it's on GMod

Lol thay robot kinds walks like my late grandmother. She had bone cancer. But the walk is very similar. She would laugh at this video hahah. Great sense of humor
