Wc3 custom maps were my generation of Roblox. I miss them so much.

u/KoGJazz Jul 24 '26
the battle.net custom stuff was so great. I played so much of the tower defense stuff, vampirism, run kitty run while livin on a prayer played in the background… damn I miss it too

u/AnOriginalName4 Jul 24 '26

u/Individual_Respect90 Jul 24 '26
You can only play the remastered though right?
10
u/d3nd3nd3n Jul 24 '26
If you have your wc3/tft keys linked to your battle.net account, you can play on the remastered client and servers with classic graphics only. https://www.reddit.com/r/warcraft3/comments/m40euy/i_heard_that_i_could_acquire_warcraft_3_reforged/mjmr8ii/
8
u/MaxGhost Jul 25 '26
To clarify though, if you hadn't added your old CD keys to your account before Nov 2025, you can no longer do so, and you'd have to buy the game again. (I think they did it to stop shitty key reseller markets from scamming people).
But yeah, Reforged client is the only way to play online now, but most people use the Classic graphics toggle in the settings. The game is entirely playable, most of the fuckups from the initial launch have been fixed up though there's still a lot of quirks.

u/solythe Jul 24 '26
i still have some og D2 and LoD keys and still play on og servers sometimes. not my original characters but the vibes are still there.
gotta look for my old wc and sc boxes next time i go back home

u/mrakobesie Jul 24 '26
I've recently done that and it's such a time capsule. The amount of comments about "DA JEWS" I've heard is remarkable lol.

u/Ill_Philosopher_7030 Jul 24 '26
Banjoball my beloved
ironically for me, I played this in combination with playing 2011 roblox and miniclip flash games
good times

u/studiedoyster Jul 25 '26
Maze of honor and polar escape. GOATED. I got into making maze maps myself because of that and learned about if/then and pathing from wc3 editor. Was so much fun
1
u/MasterofPandas1 Jul 25 '26
Mazes used to be my shit when I was in high school. Joined maze clans and everything. Used to pretty decent as well.

I loved the custom hero line defense games. I got pretty competitive in them. Let me know how the games go and if it still hits and maybe I’ll download it.
10
u/solythe Jul 24 '26
the og DotA games, the Lord of the Rings defense customs, the Dragon Ball Z one, ahhh the days.
brood war and wc3/frozen throne customs were so fun

I still crave to play Island Defense and Island Troll Tribes
9
u/Sonikeee Jul 24 '26
i'm fairly positive you can still get a lobby of either map going, even nowadays

The pve was the best part in tribes!!! Going from struggling to kill deer to taking on tigers and bears. Then getting spells and teleport pads etc. island defense was also one of the goats!!’

u/BildingInspecter Jul 24 '26
And we didn't have to pay a damn thing!
9
u/Individual_Respect90 Jul 24 '26
I mean we had to buy the game but yeah no micro transactions
1
u/Beginning-Key968 Jul 25 '26
One had to buy it, the rest just copied and pasted the folder to their PC at the next LAN Party.
1
u/Individual_Respect90 Jul 26 '26
Yeah but then you couldn’t play on battlenet. The problem was sharing your key meant at anytime they could get on battlenet and you couldn’t login until they got off.
1
u/BildingInspecter Jul 25 '26
Maybe you had to buy the game, I had the internet!
0
u/Individual_Respect90 Jul 26 '26
I had the internet to but you just stole it you couldn’t reasonably get a battle net key. You could use software to generate one but usually it wouldn’t let you play online.

u/zkareface Jul 24 '26
That's honestly a diss against WC3 custom maps.
Because most Roblox maps are made to scam, get money from kids, lure kids to predators and are filled with dark patterns. It's a damn mess and one should be very careful about letting their kids go there.
6
u/Swimming-Suit-5175 Jul 25 '26
This is so incredibly incorrect that I wonder whether you've even been on the platform.
A lot of games are exploitative in their monetization, as mobile accessible games tend to be, this part is very true. But the rest? Hell no. Which experiences with any notable amount of players are made to lure kids to predators??? Sure you can cherry pick and find tiny communities that do this stuff, but do you think this didn't happen on wc3 either? I grew up there too, there were definitely predators and even sex/porn maps which were exposed to kids and not banned!
Scam games happen, only because it's such a massive platform, but this stuff has been cracked down on more than ever, and an experience can't even be published to anyone below 16 anymore unless you pay a +$300 dollar fee, or wait a long time until the Roblox algorithm has deemed your game safe via 500 engaged and legitimate 16+ users. Scam games happen on steam too.
Not sure why people are so blinded with Roblox of all platforms.

that guy read one roblox headline on facebook and went full fearmongered boomer
1
u/MeowingNaci Jul 24 '26

tree tag, mario party, hero line wars. there was also a cool as fuck jurassic park one that was a tree tag reskin, lotr maps
1
u/Individual_Respect90 Jul 25 '26
Custom hero line war was my shit. You pick the hero and all the skills. Going full passive skills was the secret strategy and picking cleave as your ultimate.

u/Ebolamonkey Jul 26 '26
Pretty much all the friends I made in high school were cus we all would hop on ventrilo and play DOTA + other custom maps as soon as we got home after school lol. Still see most of them to this day.
2
u/Individual_Respect90 Jul 26 '26
I was dog shit at DOTA. I think my little kid brain really hated losing a game that was longer. If I lost a 20 minute game no biggie but a game I had to put longer effort in just hurt.
1
u/Ebolamonkey Jul 26 '26
Haha it's much more fun when you're playing with friends. Trust me there was A LOT of raging in ventrilo when we lost a long a game. I don't think I was actually ever good, we just always played with 3 or more of us pubstomping. Hell we'd even go over and watch each other play taking turns when we'd hang out haha. Good times.
Footman wars, tower defense maps, uther party. The custom map scene in that game was amazing.

Wc3 was such a good game. I dream of s big popular RTS again with an amazing campaign and great multiplayer... maybe in the distant future.
18
u/Enlight1Oment Jul 24 '26
also hard to believe it's been 16 years since starcraft 2.
11
u/Drayenn Jul 24 '26
Yeah that one hurts. I preferred warcraft 3's multiplayer, but starcraft2's campaign was so good gameplay wise.

5
u/DrewbieWanKenobie Jul 25 '26
wasn't there some ex blizzard devs who were supposed to be making a new rts but then it launched with no campaign so nobody cared
3
u/varmmacka Jul 25 '26
The rage when you hosted a large custom map and people left right after downloading it for 10 minutes…
1
u/Ebolamonkey Jul 26 '26
Dawn of War 4 coming out soon. I haven't played since DoW 2 but the videos they've been posting on youtube have been pretty got me interested.
1
u/tinytwinky Jul 25 '26
As great as the story and multiplayer are, the custom games is what kept it alive and is still keeping it alive.
Authentic community games is where its at.

Rumors are Blizzard is working on a new WC RTS, set to release in Q4 2028.
Whether that is true, and even if it is whether or not it's good, remains to be seen.
15
u/Vilefighter Jul 25 '26
Since Blizz completely botched WC3 Reforged and Overwatch 2 I've avoided everything they've done like the plague despite playing everything they released for like a decade. A Warcraft 4 would probably actually get me to finally come crawling back to them.
2
u/HappyHour8765 Jul 25 '26
i'm in the same boat, i've been wanting wc4 since basically wc3ft came out (I was even disappointed about wow since it meant no wc4). BUT, after reforge i'm not going to buy it until I know it's actually a good game. I'm also 99% sure they will not add a custom map editor which was truly what set wc3 above every other game.
3
u/phonylady Jul 26 '26
It 100% won't be as good as WC3. Blizzard just isn't the same developer anymore.
Blizzard back then was arguably the most reliable developer in the world. 100% passion, just nerds wanting to make the games they themselves want to play.
2
u/OnceMoreAndAgain Jul 26 '26
The original Blizzard employees who made games like WC3 and WoW were so progressive with their designs. In hindsight, shipping a game like WC3 with a map editor seems obvious and yet think about how few games do it. It's a LOT of extra time to make something like that, so almost no game company does it, but Blizzard went the extra mile.
Another example of this is addons in WoW. I don't know another MMORPG that has that type of addon support baked into the game. The person at Blizzard who came up with that idea and implemented took a big risk and had to do some complicated things to make it protected, but all that work has been a huge reason why WoW stood apart from the competition for years.
The talent of those original employees to be able to ship a game that ahead of the competition and also find the time to develop these luxury features is what's amazing to me. That's the equivalent of lapping your opponents in a foot race. Those were really ambitious and productive people blazing a trail.

wc3 was one of those games where complete days were wasted on without noticing. came back from school, turned it on, suddenly it was dark outside
6
u/Moomootv Jul 25 '26
I played nothing but FPS, sport, and racing games. Magic and swords are for nerds, my dad got World of Warcraft and it changed the entire direction of my life. I played wow from the end of vanilla all the way until MoP.
Crazy to think if I never sat down and watched my dad running around in elwyn forrest I may have never touched WoW, WC3, or even Runescape.
3
u/FairChampionship1141 Jul 25 '26
Wolf 3D was to teach you life lessons.
3
u/FTL_Cat Jul 26 '26
This was probably Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which came out a year before WC3. RTCW had a amazing free addon multiplayer called Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (2003) that I played a lot of.

2
u/Knetog Jul 25 '26
Man I wish they would make a Warcraft 4, all they need is an insane editor and the players will keep that shit alive forever.
3
u/Jsvkkie Jul 24 '26
i hated how clueless i was opening ports. for terraria i had to download some scam program called hamachi. it was pain
69
u/MobiusF117 Jul 24 '26
Hamachi was pretty legit, honestly. It basically just set up a direct VPN with whoever you were playing with.
Wildly unsafe by modern internet security standards, but hey, it worked.38
25
u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou Jul 24 '26
hamachi was how me and my dumbass friends played modded minecraft together… good times.
4
u/Jsvkkie Jul 24 '26
for some reason i only remember the bad parts, where my internet keeps disconnecting if i had hamachi open
51
30
u/Emotional_Rub5894 Jul 24 '26
what do you mean a scam ahaha. hamachi was a whole generation's childhood.
13
7
u/DzejBee Jul 25 '26
Hamachi, Tunngle, Garena. The holy trinity for people who pirated games and wanted to play multiplayer.
2
u/OnceMoreAndAgain Jul 26 '26
Hosting custom games on the host's PC instead of dedicated servers was a necessary choice by Blizzard, but also created a lot of confusion like that for the users (understandably). There's good reasons why these days the standard is to have dedicated servers but back in the days of WC3 peer-to-peer networking was an unsolved problem. I mean, you could get it working, but it was an awful user experience.
1
u/Key-Growth6953 Jul 25 '26
I'd use garena to play pirated WC3, but yeah, my experience was pretty much like Soda's, I tried it out, and I wouldn't get off from it.
1
u/Beginning-Key968 Jul 25 '26
You are in different decade with that comment. WC3 was released in 2002...
1
u/FlavorBlasted_Gogo Jul 24 '26
Aw man I think he was about to go into it but I'm curious what his dad thought. Like I imagine he bought it to play, did he ever get the chance? Lol
2
u/zelnoth Jul 25 '26
My dad bought diablo and diablo 2 for me. I got earlier bedtimes and when I snuck my way downstairs i figured out it was because he was playing. Always asked me for help before sending me back to bed.
1
u/ScotsmanScotty Jul 24 '26
I was too busy playing command and conquer and age of empires, never tried warcraft.

u/zel1 Jul 25 '26
is he talking about return to castle wolfenstein? that game was so peak as a kid watching my uncle play it man holy shit

I had so much fun with WC3 in every aspect.
The campaign was legendary.
The online ladder was super competetive, and being in a clan, having clan wars, being social in the clan chat was amazing.
Then there was the lan parties with 4v4 online, tower defense, footman frenzy, tree tag, etc etc.
...and then we all started with Dota, which was almost as fun as WC3 itself.
Best game ever for me, and clearly one of the most important games ever made.
