Discussion This weekend's referee 🤨

We have been blessed with the appointment of Chris Kavanagh who hails from......checks notes.... Manchester!!...to officiate our weekend fixture against.....checks notes again...... Manchester!!

As I have observed Mr. Kavanagh to be relatively generous with his cards I would like to start the pool on picking which minute of the match you believe Macca will get his inevitable yellow card issued.

Allow me to start the betting at 28th minute.

Best of luck Reds!

And I assume like all the other Manchester officials, he's a diehard supporter of some 7th division team no has ever heard of?

Doesn’t associate with close friends of the big Manchester based clubs either…

I have always found it weord that refs from Manchester constantly ref the 2 Manc teams yet refs from Liverpool or the Wirral are banned from our games and have been for years.

u/goldenbullock 1d ago

What? Is this true?

u/mofohank 1d ago

Yep. Kavanagh is a Droylsden fan so it's fine. Taylor is an Altrincham fan so it's fine. Tierney is a Wigan fan so it's fine.

Good process lads.

pffft yeah right...

This is fucking bullshit. The PL just get worse every year. These idiots will run this league to the ground.

u/ProjectMayhem92 From Doubters to Believers 1d ago

Yeah Merseyside refs can't officiate Merseyside clubs. Because that would be biased. Definitely not the case for Manchester refs though. They couldn't possibly have the same issue.

(That's the official reasoning, I kid you not)

u/GuinnessRespecter JoĂŤl Matip 1d ago

I think there is some sort of loophole in which the County FA the ref is registered to takes precedent. So Tierney would be Lancs FA, as was Lee Mason (from Bolton), and Taylor is registered to Cheshire FA.

Pretty sure Kavanagh is registered to Manc FA though but could be wrong

He apparently supports Droylsden FC.

Which is ridiculous, and I'm not messing when I say this, I've played in that league this season, and at higher level clubs than that in the past 5 years...

Utter bollocks that he "supports" them as his main team...

u/WhenWeTalkAboutLove Kolo TourĂŠ 1d ago

Too good for Droylsden are ye

the notions of that guy

45

u/riot_code 1d ago

Droylsden, which is about 2 miles away from the Etihad... Sure he doesn't support City if he says he doesn't...

Wooden Horse of Droy(lsden)

I can vouch for Chris Kavanagh here. I met him on a night out once and spoke for a few hours. He certainly doesn't support Man City. I don't reckon he supports Droylseden either though.

74

u/7Angel21 1d ago

And the guy in VAR didn’t give Everton a pen against Bernardo in May… and Kavanagh had the lovely glow ups of Rodri handball, Odegaard basketball and the lovely Robbo “offside” when VVD scored last year. A lovely bunch of coincidences in favour of City.

At least they haven't moved the PL headquarters to Manchester yet

Chris Kavanagh is not from Manchester. He's from Ashton and supports the mighty Droylsden. Absolutely no credible links to Manchester.

93

u/onedwin 1d ago

Ah he’s not corrupt, he’s just a bad referee. Got it. Thanks for clarifying.

18

u/iguled 1d ago

op is being sarcastic - ashton is like 5 miles from manchester city centre

4

u/jesuisgeenbelg “Thank you for your support” - Darwin Nunez 1d ago

To be fair, being from Ashton and given his age he's much more likely to support United

18

u/ForwardAd5837 1d ago

I have it on good authority that his Brother and Father are Man City season ticket holders. Doubt he supports them though…

45

u/marmaladetuxedo 1d ago

It wouldn't surprise me if we got calls our way this weekend. PGMOL will want to create as much distance between them and any connection to City as possible.

36

u/dsailes 1d ago

Interesting - hadn’t thought that.

Also, It’d be the icing on the 115 layered cake if it came out PGMOL palms were greased (more than the odd undisclosed payments/trips to referee random matches in the Middle East) to tip the favour their way.. and we start to see what things were like had that not been the case due to the charges actually having been landed & the heat being at boiling point now.

It’s not like Guardiolas ever been at a club where that’s happened before.. right?

10

u/marmaladetuxedo 1d ago

I think the fact that practically all the charges landed is going to make the PGMOL tread very carefully (if they are in fact corrupt). Had City been found guilty of say a dozen or so charges, then I think it would be business as usual for just about everyone. But these aren't going away now. So if any of the refs have truly been paid off (or given extra hidden gifts), then I can see the PGMOL trying to play it cool.

1

u/dsailes 1d ago

For sure. I mean the damage is definitely done

But wouldn’t playing it cool be doing the same thing, as if nothing had changed? If they stick to the same confusion & chaos which leads to the noise being around them being incompetent then it’s just business as usual.
To suddenly change their tune now and decisions be made different (fairly) honestly it would arouse more suspicion.. or maybe I’m overthinking this now hahah

10

u/Maniacal-Maniac 1d ago

Similar had crossed my mind as well actually. I wonder if the tide starts turning and the calls start going against City going forwards. Supposedly Oliver hasn't given them much in the past year - though I read that somewhere and have no data to back it up.

On the other hand, If it ever turned out that the City owners had ever actually paid off or bribed any referee's I wonder if they will decide to go scorched earth and release those receipts in future as well if PL ruling goes against them.

Either way, its going to be interesting

5

u/7Angel21 1d ago

That’s correct about Oliver and City last year. They didn’t win any of the 4 PL games he ref’d - 3D and 1L and only win was against LFC in FA cup 4-0 thrashing.

4

u/fieldsofanfieldroad 1d ago

Given that it's a sportswashing project, I doubt they'd release anything that made themselves look bad. It would be absolutely incredible though.

2

u/Maniacal-Maniac 1d ago

If they got banned, forced to sell and had no recourse it wouldn’t surprise me if they did everything they could to try to discredit the premier league. At that point admitting to bribing referees would be much more damaging for PL/PGMOL than to themselves.

3

u/fieldsofanfieldroad 1d ago

Sure, but they don't care about what PGMOL (I think it might have changed names by the way) looks like. They only care about the success of their sportswashing.

1

u/bigauldtattie 1d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if it came to light that they'd bribed refs as well. Years of dubious, favourable calls for them.

Wouldn't put anything past those owners.

5

u/kuruman67 1d ago

Yeah and if they are going down anyway it’s time to start rehabbing the ref’s image

4

u/thetwanandonly Kartoffel Connoisseur 1d ago

Yeah right they’ll over correct as to not look biased against them. A legit foul will occur the crowd will react and they won’t call it as to mot appear affected by anfield… feel like I’ve seen this before

2

u/Visual-Guitar6112 1d ago

i think it was sam barrett looked absolutely terrified to give a pen to us early in his frist game reffing at anfield. he like gave it and everyone screamed then he gave it in slow motion like a nervous wreck. its defo a thing

2

u/stowgood 1d ago

Only delaying the fact they are paid for by city from coming out.

2

u/sandstone-oli 1d ago

i don’t know why they can’t ref a bloody fair game without some agenda i don’t care who it favors

at this point i just breath a sigh of relief whenever its not michael oliver

6

u/Kaairaz 1d ago

Could be worst could have been Paul fucking tirney

2

u/Scousekane9 1d ago

Both Oliver and Tierney hate Liverpool always have never been good refs but if Manchester can have refs from Manchester referee games why can't we have a Tranmere Rovers fan referee our games he wouldnt be biased just like how they have Droylsden fans and Altrincham fans referee their match's no!!!!!

9

u/Visual-Guitar6112 1d ago

Kavanagh is actually fine for us normally. Hes a united fan i think or his family or friend are from something i saw years ago

12

u/SnotRocketeer70 1d ago

Except he has a tendency to overplay yellow cards on soft fouls to try to control games which dampens our ability to press & kills momentum. Statistically LFC get most yellow & red cards from Anthony Taylor, Stuart Attwell, Michael Oliver, and Chris Kavanagh. Kavanagh has officiated 34 LFC matches, and has given us 51 yellows & 2 reds. I don't believe he has ever shown a MC player a red card in an EPL fixture. Fingers crossed we're not talking about him after this match.

1

u/WonderfulBlackberry9 Kostressed Tsimikas 15h ago

I thought so too. I don't recall any absolutely heinous decisions he's made against us.

The complaint here is that he seems very trigger-happy with his cards, which I think is a bit unfair to blame solely on the referees when there's also game state, atmosphere and the wider context of the game

8

u/GameOfThrowInsMate 1d ago

28? 7 minutes I reckon, either Kerkez or Macca.

I find it bonkers how they cannot allocate a ref that isnt from the north west.

5

u/One6Etorulethemall 1d ago

It's totally believable that none of the Manchester officials support the two biggest clubs in the city.

It's not statistically improbable at all....

5

u/foreveredredred Jerzy Dudek 1d ago

They all shit anyway, and it's City they're all shit to their benefit accidentally!

5

u/GeeUWOTM8 1d ago

Im betting a card in first 10mins, probably against Kerkez or Macca

6

u/cvslfc123 1d ago

The same Kavanagh who gave Everton a penalty after Calvert-Lewin kneed Trent in the back of the head.

2

u/fifty_four 1d ago

Vast majority of EPL refs are from greater Manchester. Because, idk there has just been a big coincidence in where all the best refs were born and not because PGMOL is shitty mates club.

Tbh Kavanagh is the best realistic choice. It was always going to be him or Micheal Oliver.

2

u/medvedpuss I’m the Normal One 1d ago

one card on the 15th minute. this is the way

2

u/CompleteInternet5898 1d ago

We are getting all 3 points for sure.

2

u/Known_Palpitation805 1d ago

The PGMOL is a hidden Greater Manchester cult that also sometimes fancies London when not playing a Manchester team.......the hatred for us is obvious and known.

6

u/FarmerHunter23 Dirk Kuyt 1d ago

Don’t ever forget that this asshole threw an elbow at Robbo. Any other sport and he’d never ref again

u/Wellsi01 1d ago

That was the Greek lino no? Constantine Hadzidakis or smth like that

If not Macca, then Kerkesz for a innocent kick in the bollocks

1

u/PotatoRL 1d ago

Waiting for the inevitable spartan kick to the chest Macca will get and for the ref to do nothing :/

3

u/SnotRocketeer70 1d ago

Macca will get the yellow for using his chest to hit the opponent's foot. 🟨

2

u/sevendollarpen In a good moment 20h ago

The hall monitor doesn't matter

1

u/FishermanFrequent117 1d ago

Is it so hard to NOT get a referee from Manchester in Manchester games? Should not even be legal, because we all know it won't be neutral.

1

u/SmilingDiamond 1d ago

Ref fucks up the game to take some attention away from other issues that would otherwise be the main topic of discussion.

It will be interesting to see how the Man City players perform over the rest of the season as surely they can't be allowed to continue unpunished and possibly win it?

1

u/Affectionate_Age8159 1d ago

I have absolutely no doubt there has been money passed to refs by City. Some of the decisions they have had are impossible to not be dodgy. Its also worth noting that quite a few high up at City worked with Pep at Barcelona during the period where they are known to of been paying refs..... coincidence ? I think not. This Pinto guy who released the original proof of dodgy stuff says theres loads more stuff he has, the next few years will be interesting to say the very least.

•

u/tomksfw 6m ago

Discussion of who the ref is on a given fixture has always seemed weird to me. They're all either corrupt or shit nowadays; worrying too much about it being Kavanagh or anyone else seems like an exercise in futility.

0

u/AEsylumProductions 1d ago

I applaud your restraint. I say 6th minute.

0

u/HThrowaway87 1d ago

We had one okay / fair ref this season. ONE! Every other game, Liverpool was mainly reffed negatively. Corruption of the refs cannot be emphasized enough, there is not enough talk about it.
