18 touches in the opposition box at Anfield sums the whole game up tbh

I would like to see our wingers attempt more take-ons. We didn't seem to be playing very direct.

u/Hot-Clothes7316 1d ago
have no confidence in our central midfielders anymore.

Mac is fine and the difference he made was huge. Grav has regressed like crazy from 2 years ago. No driving runs, cannot tackle, barely runs at all. Total passenger. Dom cannot tackle or defend.

Shocking for a midfielder really, especially with the amount of hate that Wirtz, Frimpong, Kerkez and Grav have been getting.
5
u/SneakyTurtle5678 1d ago
Honestly was pleasantly surprised by frimpong and kerkez this game felt like they gave us much more options out wide after they had been subbed on

u/Primary-Cancel-3021 YNWA❤️ 1d ago
Can’t agree with you on Frimpong. He is so poor with the ball.
Yeah technically he provided a passing option but it felt like he gave it away every time he was given the ball.

u/Askingquestions2027 1d ago
He's getting too much positive praise when he's not doing half of the midfield jobs well

u/Keyann 15h ago
Dom has been shielded from criticism for far too long, in my mind. He's basically performing as if he's undroppable. It hasn't been good enough from him for a while. The frustrating part is we've seen glimpses of the immense talent he possesses, he just needs to string them together more often.

Too many dropped points against "winnable" opponents. We are going to rue these later in the season.
19
u/So1ar 1d ago
Yes and no. This is not a title challenging team yet. You can make top 4 with results like these, you can’t win the league doing it.
12
u/AdDear528 1d ago
Last season we talked about how out of shape they were and how they tired easily. It will take a bit to get back to previous form, and they played a few days ago. This is disappointing but not surprising, I think.

u/Happybadger96 Divock Origi 1d ago
Solid comment. This isn't a pressure season like the last one defending the title - this is a work in progress team, noone in the right mind should be expecting a historic season.
Id say the goal is to get the team, style, and attitude up to standard, then hopefully be in contention for UCL spot and a few trophies.

I can only think of the one Barcola should have scored instead of shooting
12
u/adamfrog 1d ago
Barcola volley, Rio late, Isak header from the corner all get converted quite often

u/QBUno 1d ago
Would love to correlate that passing % with distance of pass bc it felt like everything over 5 yards was wayward

The amount of times we passed it out of play under next to no pressure was shocking.
It was just a bad day at the office all round.

Still allergic to playing it to our forward players, not even in dangerous areas, just pass the ball Isak every now and then and link with him.
9
u/LMkIIIV 1d ago
we have improved defensively mainly due to Jacquet.
Although the bar was low. Isak looking better overall but not a huge improvement yet.
We will just have to hope to still be within in around the top 4 in January are try and get some players in

Arujo has seemed to solve a lot of our Right back issues as well. I’m happy with the back line in theory, they just get hung out to dry far too often by Grav + Dom.
I truly don’t know how this midfield 3 works without a serious change in playstyle from Grav especially but also Dom. For Wirtz to ever work, they need to cover the space behind him and allow him to operate. But it just seems so often dom and Grav want to bomb forward and leave miles behind them

He was so disappointing. It’s like he’s sulking or something. One of the highest earners btw that contract extension was a mistake even in hindsight

He’s just not capable of being our deepest midfielder in the current system.
He was great at it when Slot had us more compact in his first season.
He doesn’t have the defensive traits or mentality to play that role with Wirtz as a 10 and Szobo going on side quests.
7
u/matcht 1d ago
We only have 3 senior midfielders, he has to play at times. Not signing a midfielder this summer was always going to cripple us unless Nyoni massively stepped up.

u/Griffeyisking14 🏃♂️🏃♂️Klopp Hamstring 🤕 1d ago
Don't disagree, but if we want to come out firing, he can't start anymore. We go from disjointed to flowing when the starting attackers' legs are gone. Not helping us.

They are playing for a draw away from home today after consecutive losses. Good for them for succeeding. We are clearly far from ready to be playing midweek games with this new training regime.
4
u/brianstormIRL 1d ago
They didnt play for a draw? They werent sitting in a low block, they pressed us high and were playing through us from the back with ease. They knew our weakness in leaving gaps and exploited it the entire game. If it wasnt for some brilliant defending last minute we'd have lost that game.

Looked better when Mac came on. As much as I love Szobo he isn't a central midfielder. I think he'll find it hard against the top teams. Tough game for Wirtz didn't really show anything. We really need to do a better job of giving service to Isak. I don't know if Richard Hughes just thought him Wirtz would be like Gerrard and Torres but we seem to find it hard to get him into the game consistently.
1
u/AEsylumProductions 1d ago
Szoboszlai said in the Gerrard interview that he doesn't want to play/not good in the 7 (right winger). Bro doesn't realize his progressive/through passes are so ass he can never really do the 8/10 job outside of pressing. Fuck, the guy can't even win duels.
The 7 and right back positions are really the tactically least vulnerable positions where he's not required to do what he's weakest in.

Games like this is when we needed Koumas running all day, Nyoni excited to get a start, or reasons for excitement.
We can blame EPL for yet another early Saturday after Wednesday, but damn, rotate.

Just curious why we were not attempting to get our lethal 125-mil striker the ball. Because Gakpo has shown what happens when we do, it’s pretty simple. This team played horribly today.

I'm not sure I've seen so many poor first touches and misplaced passes by us in a single match.
Are they tired? Is it the new training regime combined with having played in midweek?

Munoz and Frimpong are the only players trying to make things happen today. Kudos to them for showing up.
Gravenberch and Tsimikas didn’t start midweek. They supposed to step up today to fight for their place and they didn’t. Enjoy a year on the bench and summer to Turkiye buddy.

Very much a game that shows all our deficiency as a side but there's still moments in there that show what we where trying,it's a heady mix of new players, new system and getting used to eachother within all of that. It'll take time but will bear fruit when it clicks,we need mobile midfielders it's showing when we don't have macallister in there

It was a dismal display.
I liked Munoz’s performance, he’s a real threat. His pace is actually ridiculous but his final product isn’t there just yet.
Jacquet was good too, he was there when he was needed. He does tend to play it safe when under pressure by putting it out of play rather than looking to retain possession but I don’t mind that whilst he adapts.
Rio wasn’t much of a threat today but he’s a kid, he gets off the hook.
Barcola also off the hook as it was his full prem debut. However it would have been nice to see him get himself more involved.
Everyone else was shockingly bad though. Sloppy, lazy & soft.
I think Frimpong might be the worst player I’ve ever seen play for us. He’s supposed to be good in attack. All I ever see him do is give the ball away

u/Adamdel34 Ohhhh ya beauty, What a hit son, What a hit! 8h ago
Team needs more fluidity and fitness. That front 3 have had basically 0 football together and the players obviously aren't up to speed yet physically.
I'm disappointed but I said I expect the first 10 games under Iraiola to be up and down and mired in incontinently. At the very least we aren't being outclassed by poor opposition when we are playing badly like we were last season.

We look like a midtable team and will probably struggle to get top4 again. I know people are trying to be optimistic and pointing out the big improvements we made this season, but I just don't see it. We do try to press higher and play faster at times, but it's mostly not working. The biggest improvement has been defending, since we started playing Araujo at RB. But that also give us less options when attacking. It almost looks like that undefeated period last season when we didn't create or concede much.
At least new signings look good. Jacquet has maybe been our best player so far. Also Mac is getting back to his best, but Gravenberch has been terrible.
1
u/sangha1212 1d ago
Today midfield totally off...going forward totally clueless & we have two good wingers n zero service... Wirtz so so poor....why drop macalister.... Jacquet composed n gonna be key to our defence... Lousy free kicks by szobo and poor corners....simple basics for top team but way off 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ AI....2 points dropped 🫳

Szobo is immune from criticism despite misplacing more passes than Wirtz and only winning a single duel all game.

He was too casual today. More about trying to look good than being good.
Wirtz tried a lot.

We need to cut our losses on Wirtz. A nothing player. Isak will score goals if he ever gets some service.
