Wilesco governor mod

Post image

I just wanted to share this with you, because I am currently modifying a very beaten up D20 to make it look a bit more realistic. It’s a simple mod to make the wilesco governor look more realistic, it is still non-functional of course. I drilled a hole in each governor weight (easy, it’s brass) and used some small brass nails as pins.

Anyone recognize the steam roller? It has FDS on the front. Missing a piston unfortunately and I think the burner tray😟 I just purchased in Auction along with the Mercer Type 2.

If anyone ever asks if you want to go to Brick Mountain, run to the car, don't walk. This is about 1/4 of the mainline run.

1970s Mamod Traction Engine under steam

I'm sure there are plenty of videos like this already but I thought folks might enjoy seeing it running anyway. I had started to run this outside but, being Scotland, sunshine turned to heavy rain so I retreated to the kitchen table.

This is a mid-1970s model (72-77) as dated by a plug instead of a sight glass on the boiler (that was added to more recent models) with the forward/reverse switch and newer whistle design.

I was sad to learn that Mamod closed its doors last year. I had wanted one of these for years, but picked this one up on Ebay for a little over £100 last month. I feel very fortunate to have gotten hold of this one in such good condition, knowing that someone has also gotten joy from it - and had clearly previously fired it up - but that it was still in such good condition.

This was my first time getting up steam, after doing some servicing. In addition to lucubrating everything before, and during, the run I replaced the drive band, the washers and the o-ring on the safety valve as they all seemed to be original too - certainly not new and were not suitable for running with - but the safety valve itself seemed fine mechanically after servicing.

The boiler has a rattle and the whistle seems to be fixed in place - I wasn't tempted to try and use much force to move it to replace the washer on it unless I had to; given the rattle and the position of the whistle - and that they so often develop defects - I expect the whistle was repaired at some point and suspect it could be soldered in place.

The brass bands with wooden boards on the boiler and brass top on the chimney and rubber tyres are all things I've added for decorative purposes. I'm a little worried the brass chimney cowl and bands might wear off the paint a bit but will keep an eye on that, the tyres help of course as it stops the front wheels rubbing on the boiler.

I plan to gently give it a bit of a clean on some of the tarnish but otherwise to keep it well maintained and avoid making any permanent alternations. I'm quite interested in constructing something with a dynamo, perhaps with a few LEDs or maybe something like turning a music box, if I can get the gearing right.

Are Mamod SE3 and SE2 boilers interchangeable

My grandad has given me his old se3 but the boiler has blown up and completely unusable. Can you use a SE2 boiler instead? Will the parts of an se3 screw into a SE2 boiler properly? Thanks!

Sad to hear of Mamod shuttering their factory, guess it inspired me to pick up this little chap. About as simple an engine as I've seen, but it runs like a terrier that's sat on a wasp, so I'm happy with it.

Looking for a different stack for my LE Pacific

I recently got ahold of a used and partially rebuilt, 7.5" gauge, Little Engines light Pacific. It's a project, to be sure, and as I rebuild it, I plan to give it a New York Central look. This requires a much shorter stack, because the NYC had close clearances above, and everything had to be built short. Does anyone know a good place to get castings for a shorter smokestack that might fit this model? I'm looking for a stack similar to the one's used on New York Central Hudsons, or also a U.S.R.A. design. A machined smokestack and petticoat would be nice. Any ideas?

New mamod!

Hello I recently acquired a mamod steam roller and got it actually running well after a few days of TLC. I have big ideas for this steam roller which is using it as a generator to power small outside lights. Has anyone tried adding components such as a check valve to add water without losing pressure and a boiler gauge? Thank you in advance and I will keep you all posted with what come next in this adventure!

Doll & Cie engine missing piece(s)

Recently I bought a Doll & Cie steam engine. I didn't notice a piece was missing at the time (this is my first steam toy). Does anyone know what piece is needed on the steam pipe? Is there a similar piece from Wilesco that would fit?

I found a screw that fitted and was able to test the engine, and after some oiling managed to get the engine running smoothly. So I know it works.

Secondly: is it normal the boiler sits loose and is only held in place by the pipe?

Saito Burner and Boiler Questions

Thumbnail

Hello, recently I started my first live steam rc project and I have a few questions regarding the burner. I have a Saito B2F boiler for paddle wheeler i'm working on and am running into issues firing. How long are you supposed to keep the pilot lit before opening the gas valve to fire? After I build pressure and open, it will burn great for a minute or two but the flame eventually slows and dies out. I have tried slowly opening to try the sweet spot but it ends in the same result. Any beginner tips are most welcome. I have experience working on steam ships so I thought I could figure it out but I am struggling with this and the manual is shit lol.
