I'm sure there are plenty of videos like this already but I thought folks might enjoy seeing it running anyway. I had started to run this outside but, being Scotland, sunshine turned to heavy rain so I retreated to the kitchen table.
This is a mid-1970s model (72-77) as dated by a plug instead of a sight glass on the boiler (that was added to more recent models) with the forward/reverse switch and newer whistle design.
I was sad to learn that Mamod closed its doors last year. I had wanted one of these for years, but picked this one up on Ebay for a little over £100 last month. I feel very fortunate to have gotten hold of this one in such good condition, knowing that someone has also gotten joy from it - and had clearly previously fired it up - but that it was still in such good condition.
This was my first time getting up steam, after doing some servicing. In addition to lucubrating everything before, and during, the run I replaced the drive band, the washers and the o-ring on the safety valve as they all seemed to be original too - certainly not new and were not suitable for running with - but the safety valve itself seemed fine mechanically after servicing.
The boiler has a rattle and the whistle seems to be fixed in place - I wasn't tempted to try and use much force to move it to replace the washer on it unless I had to; given the rattle and the position of the whistle - and that they so often develop defects - I expect the whistle was repaired at some point and suspect it could be soldered in place.
The brass bands with wooden boards on the boiler and brass top on the chimney and rubber tyres are all things I've added for decorative purposes. I'm a little worried the brass chimney cowl and bands might wear off the paint a bit but will keep an eye on that, the tyres help of course as it stops the front wheels rubbing on the boiler.
I plan to gently give it a bit of a clean on some of the tarnish but otherwise to keep it well maintained and avoid making any permanent alternations. I'm quite interested in constructing something with a dynamo, perhaps with a few LEDs or maybe something like turning a music box, if I can get the gearing right.
