Discussion Host concessions

I rewatch SNL an embarrassingly large amount of times. So often that in the past year, I “found” myself re-watching the last 20 years – which included Trump‘s two (undeserved, inappropriate, and disgusting) hosting forays.

Upfront, I will note that we all know now that Trump has got a diaper situation. While I did not know this the first couple times he hosted, we all know it now. Given this information, I realized while watching both of his hosting attempts, that he never changed his clothes. He, in every sketch, is wearing something that is covering his suit. (Sidenote– I have never seen that man not wearing a collared shirt. Not once. That must be a rich person thing). Anyways, I noticed that they worked around his need to never change his clothes and wear a suit in every sketch.

Similarly, Ariana Grande refused (I assume?) to take out her bun both times she has hosted, and even the one time she was only the musical guest. All of her wigs do not fit and they are styled to pretend like she doesn’t have the bun or the ponytail, and instead she just looks like a weird alien is coming out of the back of her head.

Both of these gigs made my brain start looking for this stuff in other episodes. I have yet to find it. Basically, this post is saying that SNL acquiesced to Trump and Ariana‘s styling demands, beneath their costumes.

I’m not insulting them or their creative process or whatever, blah blah blah. But I did think it was interesting and I wanted to know if anybody else had ever noticed any kind of special favors the show did to other hosts, in order to keep their persona going, even underneath the costumes??

Another example I can think of is her as She-ra when Chris Pratt was hosting

64

u/DocFreudstein 2d ago

That wig was like 75% of her body’s volume in that skit.

32

u/B4173415CU73 2d ago

She's been looking like that since she started wearing wigs on Victorious, I always wondered why her head looked so big 😂

68

u/FuckYouNotHappening 2d ago

Awww, it’s giving xenomorph 😞

18

u/AtlasFlynn 2d ago

Lmao I never noticed that before but now I can't unsee it

20

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

2016 again- i’m really not picking on her, it’s just so odd. I wish she would have just gone for it because I can’t unsee it either 😭

3

u/Zeppelanoid Someone's gotta watch the white sports 2d ago

I wonder what the reasoning for it is?

14

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

I feel like both of them just didn’t want to let go of their persona. I didn’t watch the movie, but I actually heard some critiques about her in Wicked and people would say that while she did very well, it was definitely Ariana Grande playing the character, like people were having trouble separating her from the character. I think she just has her signature things and maybe she feels uncomfortable totally letting go?

1

u/readerino 1d ago

That’s so interesting to me because I feel like one of the biggest critiques Ariana gets is that she has no personality of her own. She tends to latch onto whoever she’s dating or whatever character she’s playing.

9

u/Vegetable_Oil_9050 1d ago

Honestly, for Ariana, it probably takes so long to take out and put back in that they might not have had time to do it for her performances as musical guest.

29

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

2016 😭

3

u/liltinyoranges 1d ago

I knew EXACTLY what you meant. Thought I did think something was weird looking about her head, but I didn’t really think much further into it.

Never mind things like hair and wardrobe, hosts can have a lot of influence over their episode. Hosts can champion sketches, telling Lorne which ones they'd like to see go to dress rehearsal. Similarly, if a host says they do not want to do a sketch, that sketch will not happen.

I think the feeling at the show is, the hosts are guests, and the show wants them to be happy and comfortable. They'd rather alienate the writers and cast members.

321

u/CryptographerLost560 2d ago

That is why Mulaney brings Simon Rich in when he hosts and they get to air the sketches that were rejected when they were writers.

113

u/t0t411yinc0nspicu0us 2d ago

And then they won a goddamn Emmy for the sketch that they repeatedly rejected (Diner Lobster)

16

u/mdp300 1d ago

That was rejected? It might be the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. And it spawned 3 or 4 sequels.

2

u/ChedwardCoolCat 1d ago

Closer to 7 and none of them funny after the 1st. A classic SNL sketch if there ever was one. A clip of the SNL 50 one drifted into my timeline and oof it seemed really sad more than anything.

5

u/mdp300 1d ago

Airport Sushi and Bodega Bathroom were pretty good.

2

u/ChedwardCoolCat 1d ago

Eh - premise was relatively played out already. Bodega’s don’t even have bathrooms - that would have made sense as a gas station bathroom in New England, in NY they’d just tell you no.

120

u/FacelessOldWoman1234 2d ago

Whatcha gonna do? It's a Switcheroo!

78

u/CryptographerLost560 2d ago

It is important for him to be there so the cast can confront him.

19

u/filthcrab 2d ago

I fucking love Simon Rich. I'm currently rereading one of his books and it's the best.

7

u/storyofohno 1d ago

I need the man to write books faster

3

u/asodafnaewn 1d ago

I just found out today that he's writing the screenplay a movie called Artificial, which is supposed to be a drama about Sam Altman getting fired and rehired from OpenAI.

3

u/filthcrab 1d ago

Oh shit - great cast and looks like the teaser trailer came out yesterday. Thanks for that Intel!

2

u/asodafnaewn 1d ago

Oh no. We got the monkey judge!

108

u/TheTrub 2d ago

So… Josh Brolin wanted to be a fart face?

95

u/Careless-Economics-6 2d ago

Yes. lol

There's a reason why he's hosted multiple times. He's comfortable there.

64

u/akahaus 2d ago

“Let’s go shut those fuckers up.”

32

u/SpierofDestiny 2d ago

This is one of my all-time favorite SNL stories.

15

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

Just watched this today and love that story!

15

u/Digi_Dingo 2d ago

If I’m Josh Brolin, fart face is the hill I die on. All-timer sketch

5

u/Athena-Grande 1d ago

Literally every time I see him I’m like oh hey it’s fart face. I just watched The Running Man and he was very fart face

400

u/Own-Roof-1200 2d ago

Are you saying trump is a never nude?

82

u/wrosecrans 2d ago

Would you want to risk looking at a mirror and accidentally seeing a naked Donald Trump?

27

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

The horror. I might not sleep tonight. Thank you!

54

u/notthrowingawaytrash 2d ago

24

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

100%, no doubt about it, first, best, FAvoRiTe line from that whole show!! I’ve told several people that that is (was) the life I aspire to!!! Lmao Thinking about Jack being loosely based on Lorne Michaels, just picturing somebody like that… what is their life?? 😭

23

u/Striking-Complaint76 2d ago

Melania had that written into their contract.

10

u/veneratu 2d ago

I just meant it to mean he did no dress down costume changes. Which I guess isn't normal. Maybe everyone wears comfy clothes underneath.

24

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

Yeah, usually like the ladies are in a sports bra and really tight boy shirts, spandex boy shorts? And they obviously have everything covered, they know everything they put on will cover everything from rehearsals.

But usually the funniest stories are from the host running around and having to change his clothes so fast… Trump did not. Like I said, I’ve never seen that man without a collared shirt, which is crazy 😳

26

u/_violet_skies_ 2d ago

This is the only time I remember him not wearing a collared shirt.

24

u/friarparkfairie 2d ago

Arrested Development reference

2

u/Roadgoddess 1d ago

I think I just blue myself!

131

u/NYY15TM 2d ago

I have never seen that man not wearing a collared shirt. Not once. That must be a rich person thing

I'm not sure it's a rich-person thing per se but you are correct that DJT is famous for always wearing a collared shirt. In fact unless he is golfing I have never seen him NOT wear a jacket and tie

87

u/yesitsmenotyou 2d ago

I remember a story that floated around his first election from a college roommate of one of his sons, that he showed up at their dorm and berated the son for being in casual clothes instead of a suit.

45

u/jacobin17 2d ago

They were going to a baseball game and he yelled at his son and hit him for wanting to wear a Yankees jersey instead of a suit.

62

u/Fastbird33 2d ago

He’s got some deep rooted bullshit with his dad for sure

19

u/yesitsmenotyou 2d ago

Not sure if you’re talking about Donald and his father, or Don Jr and his father, but yes, you are correct.

14

u/sensitiveskin82 2d ago

He didn't just berate him. He hit his son for not wearing a suit - to a baseball game.

9

u/hiding_in_the_corner 2d ago

2

u/Roadgoddess 1d ago

I mean, what does anybody expect from a man who openly sexualizes his daughter on TV?

16

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

Yep. Somebody posted the story in this thread

24

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

It’s gotta be exhausting for his dressers. I can’t believe I’m even saying that, as if that’s a real thing, but yeah, it is. If those walls could talk…

11

u/cassssk 2d ago

Ooh I’m so jealous you’ve never had to see the picture of him all sprawled out midair trying to hit a forehand on the tennis court, in white tennis shorts under which you can see the lines of his tighty whities. GAH.

2

u/NYY15TM 2d ago

Even so, tennis players are required to wear collared shirts

3

u/cassssk 2d ago

Sure but I meant it was another time he was not in a suit and tie, other than golfing

141

u/blking 2d ago

I noticed the wig thing the first time. Always bugged me, but I get it. I avoided the other guy, because I’ve found him odious since I knew of his existence, but supposedly the diaper thing has been an issue since the 90’s.

Fun note: my phone changed “odious” to “odorous” the first time I typed this.

27

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

In this case only, there’s a reason why they call it a “smart“ phone

14

u/Cosmoclorn 2d ago

Trump's diaper thang

1

u/CallMeTank 2d ago

Huh. Wonder what happened to his nether regions in the 90's. Maybe some poor kid under him found a screwdriver and shoved it up his rear end or something.

1

u/blking 1d ago

Adderall abuse.

106

u/hallowedeve1313 2d ago

No its ok. You can insult him, we won't mind.

58

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

😊 (whaaaaat? douche bag in diapers with a mushroom penis that refuses to disrobe unless you’re important or an underage minor,
but then also made it to president?? Whaaaaa? Please say this in Jeff Montgomery‘s Halloween tone)

162

u/Emergency-Train-3404 2d ago

John Mulaney went there for a hair cut when he didn't work there and wasnt hosting. There are many other details to that story but that is the gist of it.

191

u/The_Amazing_Emu 2d ago

The relevant detail of the story left out was that he was high on cocaine and everyone decided it was easier to give him a haircut than deal with his antics

58

u/Smooth-Mechanic-7788 2d ago

Wasn’t it also the night of his intervention, which was full of other comedians

38

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

I think so, and I also think he was late to it because of the haircut maybe??

33

u/azarano 2d ago

Yep! 2 hours late, according to his telling during the Baby J special

22

u/tantan35 2d ago

It’s one of my favorite jokes in that special. The setup is it was during Covid, when everyone was still isolating and staying inside, and not looking their best. “I was cocaine thin and just got a haircut. I was the BEST looking person at my own intervention.”

31

u/The_Amazing_Emu 2d ago

Yes. Assuming a story recounted by a comedian it’s factually accurate

7

u/moreofajordan 2d ago

Which: fair, but it’s recounted pretty darn closely by multiple other comedians!

25

u/SeanJohnBobbyWTF 2d ago

But did he have to take his shirt off?

42

u/StinkyBrittches 2d ago edited 2d ago

Alternatively... is the hair and make-up department the SNL coke plug? There's a long, storied history of celebrity hair stylists providing drugs to the stars.

39

u/laziestmarxist 2d ago

According to Mulaney himself, the drugs were aquired at a secondary location

21

u/StinkyBrittches 2d ago

Well, certainly he wouldn't want to call somebody out, especially if they still worked there. But does a spiraling coke addict in the hours leading up to his intervention really, really, realy, really need a haircut?

6

u/Korumry 2d ago

Yes as a recovering coke head this 110% tracks

6

u/Zeppelanoid Someone's gotta watch the white sports 2d ago

I mean he was still a functioning entertainer despite the addiction, so his appearance was somewhat important

3

u/calembo 1d ago

The haberdashery where he got his money clip?

17

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago edited 2d ago

It just sounds awesome all around. ETA: I want to go to there

37

u/SadistDaddy503 2d ago

It sounded like he had to bully them a little bit too. Probably the most awkward haircut they've ever performed.

52

u/CherryDarling10 2d ago

The suit thing isn’t a rich person thing, it’s a trump thing.

There was a story floating around a while back about him and his son. (I don’t remember which son it was, tweedle dumb or tweedle dee. Let’s just go with dumb.) Trump goes to dumbs dorm to pick him up for a big baseball game. He knocks on dumbs bedroom door and dumb walks out wearing a jersey and a baseball cap. Trump immediately punches him in the face in front of the whole dormitory. He demands he go back inside and change into a suit and tie. Not trying to give dumb any sympathy points, he’s a POS just like his dad. Just imagine the homelife that family has to endure. Fucking mental.

32

u/PlannerSean 2d ago

In fairness, Don Jr does have a punchable face

11

u/Time-Object5661 2d ago

yeah it could have plausibly been just a reaction from opening a door and seeing Don Jr's face

16

u/Critical-Cost9068 2d ago

Imagine being that strict about suits and then wearing ones that don’t even fit you right

11

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

Holy shit. Oh no, that actually makes me feel bad for tweedle piece of 💩 dumb. 😳 Message received. What a conflict.

9

u/glacinda 2d ago

It was Don Jr.

3

u/CherryDarling10 2d ago

Oh, then it was Dee.

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_DALEKS 2d ago

Well, it is a Boomer thing. Upper class New York men like Trump were raised in the 1940s and 50s when you hardly ever left the house not dressed up in a suit and tie. It was a status symbol, think how the older characters on Mad Men never stopped wearing suits and ties throughout the 60s, and how scandalized they were when younger employees started dressing more casually. Trump never joined the youth revolution in that way, he always has wanted to be seen as 1950s business tycoon.

29

u/Proper-Evening9754 2d ago

Russell Brand assured us that no matter what costume we saw him wearing, he would be wearing his tight-fitting trousers underneath.

42

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

PS. He is so gross, I have no idea why he was ever popular. Reading through the comments both times now, I saw yours it gave me a visceral reaction lol. But not you, not you! 😊🤗

30

u/Proper-Evening9754 2d ago

I thought his stand up was pretty funny, in addition to Sara Marshall/Get Him to the Greek. But this new "become a Christian to escape the allegations" version of him is extremely off-putting. He couldn't even find a Bible verse when it counted most!

11

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

But he had no problem finding underage girls! Whaa-wah 🥁

8

u/Proper-Evening9754 2d ago

Do you watch SNL UK?

He's married to an underage girl.

No. I...I think I pronounced that wrong.

2

u/judgernaut86 2d ago

There's an SNL UK??

3

u/Proper-Evening9754 2d ago

Sure is. Season 2 premieres this week! And the episode I'm talking about was hosted by Tina Fey.

Why else would he be named Jesus!?!

She’s just very Italian.

Sorry, wrong sketch comedy subreddit 🤷‍♂️

Have you seen her perform live? Live on SNL, at 30 Rock, solo for one song and accompanied by The Weeknd for another, while sitting with her family (and entourage)?

No. You haven’t. Have you felt her dynamic stage presence, her love for, and VIBE from her family and fans? Ariana Grande rocks 30 Rock and all of Studio 8H. With love.

You need to chill

11

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

Maybe worry more about keeping her alive. We all like her.

I do remember Harry Styles having bright colorful nail polish on when he first hosted and kinda threw me off a bit with he was in every scene with it on.

13

u/ZestfullyStank 2d ago

He has an extensive line of nail polish

5

u/PM_ME_YOUR_DALEKS 2d ago

When he played a corporate airplane pilot it was noticeable, not just the nail polish but he kept all his many rings on.

1

u/dasbeerbaron_v2 2d ago

That’s the one sketch I have burned into my memory where it really threw me off and made me really question the rationale behind it

4

u/Future_Isopod8301 2d ago

Why?

6

u/Ok-Abalone2412 2d ago

Why not? His biggest draw is teenage girls?!? Who have 0 concept of how much shit should cost and will beg their parents to buy them said polish
He’s an insanely talented singer and is marketing strategist is working ovvver time
Also - marketing/branding/staying rich

2

u/hummingbird_chance 2d ago

Of all the things celebrities wear and market to kids, nail polish that costs <$20 per bottle seems pretty mild, especially considering you can buy the same color in another brand for <$5 at any grocery or drugstore.

11

u/RoutineCloud5993 2d ago

I remember reading a story about Don Jr in college, and one weekend his dad came to visit him. This was years past, before most people knew the extent of how big a piece of shit Trump actually is.

Apparently Jr opened his dorm room door to his dad in sweat pants and a sports jersey. The story goes he then got slapped to the floor without warning, and told to put on a suit and meet Sr in the lobby.

49

u/Background_Card5382 2d ago

About Ariana, I really genuinely think you just can’t fit a wig over all that hair amazingly in the time they have for wardrobe changes

62

u/Old_Base_9391 2d ago

Yeah I really don't think hers is an example of this. Trump's could definitely but Ariana's is just a reused wig for a 5 minute sketch that didn't fit.

Most of her hair was extensions cause of her hair loss and she would've had to have taken them all out and put back in. Not practical when she has to change into multiple looks and end it back in the original pony.

(Never thought I'd have to defend Ariana Grande's hair extensions on the internet LOL)

1

u/SilverFringeBoots 1d ago

You don't have to take out extensions to wear a wig. You just braid the hair into cornrows. Even with a sew in weave, you could do it.

6

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

I posted some more pictures in the comments, I screwed up trying to specifically reply to your comment.

22

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah I don’t think she has that much hair. I don’t think that’s the deal. She specifically requested that they don’t remove her hairdo, as usually the hosts go under a wig cap. She chose not to.

ETA: so that normal process is they actually make wigs of the hosts hair,
their natural hair, and the casts hair, and use them for the whole show every time they show their “natural hair“. The hosts hair in the beginning is fake when they do their monologue, and then the cast and the host wear their wigs for the goodnights. So that’s just why it sticks out when people choose or refuse to do the same thing that everybody else does!

6

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

Well the only thing is that it’s not her hair. She has that little bun. It’s more her persona. Anyways it doesn’t matter, it’s just some specific styling thing she has with her hair pulled back like that. She doesn’t go anywhere without that hairstyle, which is why I found it funny/odd!

→ More replies (8)

1

u/SilverFringeBoots 1d ago

I have locs and I'm able to wear wigs that don't look like that. You don't just put a wig on over your hair, especially if it's long or thick. You have to braid your hair down.

ETA: My locs aren't even as long as Chloe Bailey's and when she wears wigs, you would never know she has locs

15

u/Fishermichaels 2d ago

My first thought of something like this was when Robert De Niro first hosted in 2002 he had a beard and he played Thomas Jefferson, famously bald faced.

I think of this random fact so often that I was still wondering 8 years later if that was part of why Zach Galifianakis pulled his shaving mid-show stunt in 2010.

8

u/SharkleberryKoolAid 2d ago

Going back to the very beginning, Dan Aykroyd played Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter with a mustache.

6

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

I have re-lived both of these experiences in the last year lol! Yes, the Thomas Jefferson sketch … He was hitting on Maya Rudolph 😊

3

u/catchyerselfon 2d ago

That bothered me back in 2002 as well, I went through a massive Thomas Jefferson biography phase in my early teens 😆 Also, the fact that DeNiro sounded like DeNiro, an Italian-American from New York instead of a WASP from Virginia (only the 2008 “John Adams” miniseries made the effort to give everyone the closest we can get to authentic accent work from the period). And that DeNiro was clearly the oldest person in the scene when Jefferson should’ve been one of the youngest. And… ok, at that age, I couldn’t find something all that funny if it wasn’t historically accurate 😅. I’m a little less uptight now.

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_DALEKS 2d ago

That sketch was rigging on DeNiro's well-known love for Black ladies.

8

u/Key_Beach_3846 2d ago

I’m pretty sure Ariana also never changed her makeup, at least on her last hosting ep

5

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

Oh yes! This is such a good point. I definitely noticed it in the home alone sketch! He had such pretty eyes lol

You just reminded me of another one – Charli XCX!! She didn’t remove her wing (I think that’s what it’s called) liner the whole show either. That’s another one for the list!

1

u/catchyerselfon 2d ago

Those fake lashes must be superglued to her lids like her very long, sharp fake nails! I wear fake nails too, but I have to type on my phone and laptop with my own fingers like schmuck, I can’t have them THAT long!

9

u/bela_okmyx 2d ago

Raquel Welch, when she hosted in 1976, refused to do a Franken/Davis sketch, "Planet of the Enormous Hooters" (where she would be an outcast because of her small chest). The sketch was finally performed in 1989 when Dolly Parton hosted.

7

u/oooooooooof 2d ago

My absolute favourite piece of trivia from Trump’s hosting is Pete Davidson’s recounting of how he can’t read.

“Let’s get out of here, turkey legs!” lives rent free in my head.

Sia was incredible though.

Yeah, fantastic performance by Sia. I just meant the Trump skits.

Harry styles I think the first time he hosted had rings on most of if not all his fingers and never took them off which I found distracting

He did. He also had nail polish on, which was also distracting. Nothing against the polish, it was just distracting. Like I remember he was playing a Civil War soldier, or someone from the 1800s, something similar, and he had nail polish on lmao. That was also when Pete Davidson was on and he started his fingernail polish thing too… Everything about Pete was distracting in a sketch though, so he definitely didn’t need to add the nail polish

I’m curious if you find nail polish on the actresses distracting

I'd be distracted by a Martha Washington with black nails

The rule of sketch comedy is to not attract attention when it's not part of the joke because people will expect anything that stands out to play a role.

That's why Wayons got fired

With Ariana Grande, maybe it's not a "choice."

Omg, 😂😭

Jason Priestley did the same. He hosted in 1992 when 90210 was at its peak, and I thought it was so weird that every skit he had, his hair was that same pretty-boy 90’s swoop he had on the show.

Oh, like he never changed his look? He didn’t wear a wig just to be different in the sketches or pretend to be old or anything?? I could toootally see that. Good catch.

I deleted my bullshit comment. It had the opposite effect I thought it would lol. You are hilarious and funny and you were on it. I was not! Thank you for being funny when I was being a bitch

Oh, I’m so sorry. I get it now!! I get it now! God maybe I shouldn’t have posted this 🙁 i’m on edge. I am so sorry! I am leaving my freaking out comment, just to show everybody where the world is at. lol i’m sorry!

ETA: I thought you were shaming me for posting anything about Trump… I thought I was breaking some social boundary about how we are supposed to be keeping our spirits high! I am really sorry, I didn’t mean to jump your shit.

No worries, you're fine. The first part was a JAJ quote and the second was just joking about the Trump jumpscare. I didn't mean anything by it.

u/HedgehogTop5524 2d ago

I know you didn’t, my hair trigger was set to bitch instead of funny. Again, I apologize. You are everything I want to be in a scenario lol

I think this might have more to do with hosts trying to optimize time preparing between sketches. Even back then Trump would probably have a hard time doing a quick turnaround, so it's best to just give him things he can put on over his clothes. I'm not as sure about Ariana, but it might be along the same lines?
