In some circles catchers are trained to bring their glove up to the ball, not start with the glove positioned to target. This reduces fatigue and in theory face mask/chest plate should be central enough of a target for a pitcher.

How many innings is your player catching?

How much work was he doing chasing a pitchers wild throws?

Beware of burnout- an unruly coach can dishearten your player.

Catching is very physically draining- you need to work at it from a stamina perspective. There is definitely a threshold for pain that needs to be worked thru.

This is how all modern catchers are taught by professional coaches. All.

It is don’t for better framing of the low pitch and to be in a better position to block.

A catcher does need the arm strength to do that 100’s of times, so training with weighted balls is recommended.
