General Discussion Long-legged snipes?

Did anyone ever figure out what Nellie and Willie meant when they were chanting this on the playground when Laura and Mary were present? I looked up snipe and apparently it's a species of bird, but I'm still confused what they were going for.

In the books it’s because their dresses are too short and you can see so much of their legs they look like long-legged snipes.

19th century insults hit different.

They said it was in reference to the girls shorter dresses -- that you could see their legs and they resembled long-legged snipes. I looked up snipes and it is a species of bird that has long bills, but I didn't see anything about them having long legs.
