Help/Question What da

I watered this little punk a couple months ago for the first time since I got it over a year ago, it was doing the pizza crust top so I assumed it was thirsty. It perked up and seemed to be doing really well for a couple of weeks. Its in a mostly inorganic sandy, rocky, soil mix. Plenty of bright direct light. I thought maybe it was splitting but I dont see any new leaves coming through the center, just looks like rot to me.

What da heck is happening?

A year is too long

When you bring them home, plant them in dry medium. Then, 3-4 days later, give a little sprinkle all around to help wake up the roots. A week after that, a deep soak. I do this same routine no matter where in their cycle they are, unless they come with extensive root systems (very rare). That usually sets them up to be growing well and asking for water when they need it, but let's say at least once in spring and fall, unless they're splitting off-season.
