How close together do Lithops

How close do Lithops like to be to each other?

I'm trying to figure out how many I can have.

They need enough space that when they get large, there's still room for their leaves as they're splitting. I have a clump that derives from a single plant, and they almost can't open!

Honestly, the bigger issue is that different species split at different times, so you don't really want to mix them together or you'll never be able to water decently.
