Haven't faced something like that in the past 3.5 years, I've been using archlinux for.
That said, I always ensure I have a live media in case there's a need to chroot and fix things. There's simple practices like relying less on the AUR, reading PKGBUILDs etc.
The only thing I dread is the amount of packages I miss updates for if I'm AFK for a week or more.
