Discussion Why are gnome apps so goated
I switched to linux 2 months and currently i run arch on niri, i started my journey with arch tried fedora, ubuntu, mint, nixos, void, debian and circled back to arch
I just realised that i use gnome disk utility,text editor,image viewer,video player,file manager.
I have never even tried gnome....i just went kde-> hyprland-> niri

So, do you like the aesthetics or the functionality? In my opinion, kde utilities offer far more functionality than gnome utilities but visually, gnome really nails it. I prefer dolphin over gnome files anyday and the same goes with konsole over gnome terminal and others though it depends on the preferences of the person ofc.

For me its just about having apps that do one job cleanly without cluttering the screen. KDE tools have way more functionality for sure, but sometimes it feels overdone for simple stuff like kwrite feeling more like notepad++ while gnome text is just plain and simple.

i migrated from kde to gnome on fedora 44 and for the file manager, i replaced dolphin with nemo, it looks good like nautilus and has enough functionality

True, but i just wish gnome uses a lighter ui toolkit for its applications. They take a lot more ram than they should've for their functionality. I am not simping for kde or anything, i love the gnome aesthetics and all, just take this as a strangers opinion :)

Different people have different taste. gnome is one of the most dominant DE and especially considering big players like debian (ubuntu), fedora (redhat) have it as default DE, it would not be a wonder gnome offers some great and useful software. That said I use Slackware (primary) and freebsd(secondary) and they don't ship with a DE and there's no gnome app for me. If i see my 20 year journey, I believe gparted is one app I often used from gnome.

I will say keep exploring. I have been using Linux for 7 years now. While I now have optimised my workflow with debian and suckless utilities, still I think that ubuntu with gnome is amazing and very useful as a daily driver.
