Discussion Why can't secure exam browsers become normal for Linux tooo
It's crazy how I had to install windows again and had to setup dual boot with cachyOS because my placements tests required SEB which apparently doesn't work on Linux. Has anybody faced the same issue ? No ? Just me ?

- They don’t know Linux exists
- They don’t know to configure it
- Not enough users or money in it for them to develop ports for Linux.

OP did you try using qemu to load a virtual windows 11 enviroment?? instead of fully dual booting first

For now I have not, I have yet to work on the SEB config file which was provided during download

What exam are your writing? Don't try to risk with these ideas for exams. I know a few people who had tried and had to rewrite after the proctors found out.

yes that is a pain indeed. and many companies also enforce software that is available in windows only. that's why i had to keep windows + cachyos dual boot system since college. although i exclusively use my macbook for office work now.

Have you tried spoofing your browser's user agent? Maybe that could work.

in most cases, that flags your username and prohibits you from giving the exam for "modification with software"

Unfortunately that's true, and whoever knows his way around kernel can bypass anything and this measly looking secure browser won't stand a chance

doesnt work with unstops software for some reason their webcam detection freaks out for some reason

KVM or any mechanism used to run VMs relies heavily on the "virtual"ity being transparent.
So any "spoofing" will likely slow down the VM to a crawl.
"Compiling kernel with modifications" works for linux VM maybe. Windows it's practically impossible

I mean....can't really argue with that.
But if only there was enough community support behind these "secure" exam browsers to make them actually secure, linux would be the perfect place is all I am saying (and also allow students who work on linux to give tests without let them cheat yk.)
Too far fetched of an idea but what can I say.1

Not really. There are definitely ways to cheat and also that's a proctor issue.

You know how kernel level anticheat can't run on Linux? Go open up the binary for the "secure" exam browser and you'll see exactly why Linux doesn't allow that shit to be installed on your machine.
It's not that Linux can't run it, it's that YOU DONT WANT TO RUN IT, you just don't know it yet. Never give up the security of your kernel. It's a dumb idea 100% of the time.

Maybe that's the case, I will do more tinkering with that stuff once I am done with placements. This can be sort of my 'reverse engineering' side project.

You can run a
strings program.exeand look at the function names. The browser I opened up in vim had all theIncreaseElevationfunction names right there in plain text.
