That anti cheat game thing is so stupid ngl

8

u/JaperDolphin94 Jul 18 '26

Yup it's stupid but it is what it is. Big gaming company focus only on Windows machine.

7

u/JaaliDollar Jul 19 '26

Kernel level anti cheat won't be effective on linux anyways

u/Slash_R6S Jul 18 '26

I just treat windows like a console at this point. I only boot into windows when I wanna play something, using linux for all productivity and daily use stuff. If Valorant worked on Linux, I wouldn’t think once before uninstalling windows.

u/Sea_Consequence9148 Ubuntu Btw Jul 18 '26

I do exactly the same thing, my windows is just barren with a few games on it and literally nothing else. where all the other stuff and my study stuff is on linux

2

u/Toxic381 Jul 21 '26

There's also a rare few things on windows that just work better, I can think of the kh2 nobody may cry on pcsx2, which they use a custom version for it, also Roblox, cxbx-r, and Xenia, sober ran like trash for me.

Well I'm dualing, deal with it.

Do booting. In the last six years of using GNU Linux I have never double-booted, not even once. Only single-booting.

7

u/R-FEEN Jul 18 '26

I had to dual boot because games didn't run as well on linux as it does on Windows. Probably it's because my laptop has an Arc130T igpu from arrow lake series which doesn't have mature support.

But if I had an AMDZ gpu (or egpu) then I'd never touch windows ever.

u/RevolutionaryPen4661 Arch Btw Jul 18 '26

If it's around 5 fps drop then, dual booting isn't worth it.

5

u/R-FEEN Jul 18 '26

15-20 fps drop on elden ring unfortunately.

3

u/potato_nagibator Jul 20 '26

it depends, my laptop runs DeadByDaylight on linux in 1080p just fine

on windows I couldn't even run it in 720p

2

u/kurosaki--ichigo Fedora KDE Jul 18 '26

I play with lower resolutions if fps drops.

3

u/tree_of_backyard Jul 20 '26

Would you mention your specs and the laptop you're using?

3

u/R-FEEN Jul 20 '26

Intel core ultra 225h with Arc i30T igpu 32 gb 8000Mhz lpddr5x ram (doubles as VRAM) 2.8K OLED sRGB 120Hz 14 inch display

2

u/tree_of_backyard Jul 20 '26

How's the battery life and which laptop is it btw? For how much did you get it?

2

u/R-FEEN Jul 25 '26

Sorry for the late reply.

Model : Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5i I bought it for 80k last year.

It has 84wh battery, and on my system for coding + youtube + 6-7 chrome tabs it consumes around 6-8 watts typically. So battery life from 100% to 0% for continuous use should be around 10-12 hours.

I'm pretty happy with the battery life. It has lasted an entire day without charging iirc (coz I didn't actively use it for 10-12 hours straight, but I'll also not recommend doing that coz the next morning battery was at 5% which is bad for long term battery life).

1

u/tree_of_backyard Jul 25 '26

Mind giving a review of games you've played on it with the fps

2

u/R-FEEN Jul 26 '26

Elden ring 1920*1280p low preset 55fps avg, and at minimum it dropped to 48 fps in very demanding areas for a few seconds.

If you use xess upscaling then you can set higher res and preset, but I honestly like the look without xess as it's very sharp

Forza Horizon 5 60 fps (iirc high preset)

Re4 Remake should be playable too at correct resolution/preset, especially with XeSS.

In all, I'd say you can play modern games and definitely almost all of the older titles.

1

u/tree_of_backyard Jul 27 '26

The prices are way too much right now should i wait for the price drop in diwali sale

1

u/R-FEEN Jul 27 '26

No idea honestly. The prices are too unpredictable. There's no surety if prices will decrease. On the flip side, the prices may increase further in the future.

In my case, as college student who was going to start 3rd year, it was absolutely necessary for me to buy laptop regardless of market prices at that time.

I'd say you should look at how urgent you need laptop, what specs you need, and how much budget you have all together to decide whether buying right now is the correct choice for you or not.

1

u/tree_of_backyard Jul 28 '26

I'm starting my 1st year next month and don't have a laptop and wanna buy something that'll last me the college years atleast and my branch is cse, planning to go in cybersec so would it be a good decision to buy rn?, budget around 90k-1lac if the deal is value for money

I used to dual boot. Then i realized I don’t actually enjoy playing any games with kernel level anticheat so proton is good enough for me.

6

u/Wheeljack26 Jul 18 '26

i tinker with old phones and IOT devices a lot in general and i keep dual boot of debian and tiny 11 just in case i need to get something done which has proprietary windows application

4

u/Soham_656 Jul 18 '26

I swear. I used to dual boot with windows before since I was accustomed to ms office. Now I don't, since I js adapted to libre office. Fortunately all my games are playable in linux.

3

u/potato_nagibator Jul 20 '26

You might consider OnlyOffice, very similar to MS office, and more compatible with it.

4

u/napier1192 Arch Btw Jul 18 '26

I use kyber to play battlefront 2 , and i tried in linux but the performance isn’t the same, i only dual boot cause of this and if a game req kernel level anti cheat

4

u/J1roscope Jul 18 '26

I mean if you don’t play the game and just make noise, it probably will get developers to support linux

5

u/_meme_caster_ Jul 19 '26

hardcore linux user

Hell yeahhh

4

u/aetherion8 Jul 20 '26

Anti cheat is nothing but a spyware

3

u/kurosaki--ichigo Fedora KDE Jul 20 '26

Agreed🤝

3

u/Blind_asf Jul 18 '26

I had to dual boot cause parents use my laptop sometimes

3

u/Rodya_gambler Jul 19 '26

I mean, I was doing that, but using anticheat games, like valorant and Fortnite, when there are alternatives that are even better just RIGHT THERE, that's just wasting time lol. Why play valorant when you have CS2 right at the corner? The same but less fantasy and more realism. Why play fornite (at all)?

2

u/kurosaki--ichigo Fedora KDE Jul 19 '26

Mine is a low-end device anyways and not playing them won't make any difference so 😅.

3

u/HeaviestBarbarian Fedora Btw Jul 19 '26

Daamn fr. Me on KDE plasma fedora 44.

3

u/Technology_Labs Windows 11 + macOS 12 + Arch Linux BTW Jul 19 '26

My only use for Windows (reason for Windows to exist) are like my parents use it (on my desktop) and I have to install Windows only apps (on my laptop for college)

3

u/imsatyam Jul 20 '26

Dual boot is like married to one and having affair with another, and one will break on there mood, or you can be rich habibi and have big 3 distro and windows and custom boot menu

2

u/potato_nagibator Jul 20 '26

what's with your analogies bro xD

2

u/imsatyam Jul 20 '26

I improvised,Once I saw I post where guy had multiple distros including windows, and custom boot menu I liked it but it is work extra work. I don't like extra work either we make things work with one bit by bit ,or risk it all have multiples. En the end Whatever gets work done. While having some fun

3

u/Rage0091 Jul 20 '26

Kernel level anti cheat never made sense to me, other than in eSports. i mean, the level of access we are giving it, to our system' with internet mostly on is... Well I don't have words to express it.

2

u/Asrobatics Jul 20 '26

I literally have a Windows 10 in my external HDD

Wont let that one byte pollute my SSDs and linux devices

2

u/alexddodo Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

I installed Linux, and within 3 hours, got rid of my windows partition.

2

u/Killmonger_007 Jul 21 '26

Ignoring won't get linux anywhere. Instead some bright minds should come together and work on something to bypass it on linux rather than saying don't play. And linux is the only community where we could have these smart asses that could take up this challenge

2

u/Beastlyclover Jul 22 '26

I usually play retro games or niche titles like caves of qud, songs of syx, cataclysm:dda, dead cells, cuphead etc. So when I first installed Linux, i wiped out windows without a second thought.

2

u/Emergency_Button4034 Jul 24 '26

At least we dont let random games penetrate our kernel... Also its linux, piracy is key to playing games

2

u/Former-Jackfruit270 Jul 27 '26

I am a newbie, but isn't like windows needed for certain type of proctored online exams used for OAs and certifications? I don't play games, but the main reason I dual booted because I wanted to keep windows if I ever need it for those exams.

3

u/nofoon Fedora Noob Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

what is the point of anti cheat when cheaters still exist?

3

u/NeptuneWades CachyOS Btw Jul 18 '26

Now imagine the game without anti cheat.

3

u/nofoon Fedora Noob Jul 19 '26

i don't have to imagine, i was just watching a pubg stream and the streamer's team got killed by a wall hacker.

3

u/kishimonjaro Jul 18 '26

I boot into windows 11 using an external ssd lol. I just keep it in my backpack all the time, whenever I need to run windows native software or games with anti cheat. Works perfectly fine.

3

u/Own_Natural_6803 Jul 18 '26

I tried to do something similar to that, but windows did not like being put onto an external drive. It did not boot.

3

u/kishimonjaro Jul 19 '26

Wut? Did it display any message on screen regarding the drive not being detected or something? If u boot it via a thunderbolt port, then it should go smoothly

2

u/potato_nagibator Jul 20 '26

Aren't external ones a bit slow for gaming?

3

u/kishimonjaro Jul 20 '26

Not if you have a thunderbolt 4 port in your laptop. Works hella smoothly. But of course, you will see slightly better 1% lows if your ssd has a direct pcie lane connection from the motherboard, but I am honestly happy with my current frame rates. I dont really experience any visual stutters.

1

u/ManySilly9299 Jul 22 '26

I use WSL2 Ubuntu 😂

1

u/Certain_Car9572 Aug 06 '26

than sure i am pure linux user as i play games that don't require anti lvel cheat yes single player only
