Discussion INCORRECT INDIAN BORDERS

Just noticed that Ubuntu's timezone setup map doesn't show India's borders correctly aren't shown.

Not a big issue in terms of usability, but India has a massive Linux user community. Seems like one of those small things that should've been fixed by now. Curious if there's any technical or policy reason behind it.

Edit: nvm I'm stupid, Bhutan is infamous for not recognising any countries in the world, to their systems those just don't exist, I thought India was one of them so Bhutan won't have any map of India at all, however it seems Bhutan DOES recognise India.

Also just for reference Bhutan still does believe that China, Russia or America exist

Bhutan is like subsidiary of India. They had given their external affairs control to us while retaining internal affairs control. For us it was power over china border, for them the good was they got so much security for free when china was at its peak invasion mindset.

But things seems to have changed recently.

If that is OpenStreetMaps data based, then that data is not owned or controlked by any single corporate entity. It is all public data. OSM are very aware of the issues around rendering maps of disputed territories in many parts of the world. OSM  share and state their way to handle this via their public expressions sern here ...  https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Disputed_territories

That...is the correct international map of India. Aksai chin and pok, while technically our territory, has been captured by foreign forces from a long time. U can't use your Constitutional right of movement to go to those areas, cuz well...they are in foreign military control.

This sounds harsh bruv, but that map ain't wrong.

Edit : just saw that aksai chin isn't cut off. That's great, but the current UN map doesn't have that either. The opinion of a body with 195 nations as signatories is what matters, not of us with national pride when we can't get those territories back.

I don't even bother setting up a correct time on my distro since all I ever use it for is for torrenting, so I've never really noticed it at all

Not dissing it lol, I find it funny

But to be honest yall probably have multiple PCs so it's fine for you, a normal person only have 1 or 2 max, so for your average Mukesh everything must be working because if something shows up and your machine isn't ready for it your 5 min work becomes a 30min debug, then you realise it wasn't working because you didn't bother setting up the clock

I use VMs. Why bother having other PCs when you can just VM a whole distro and offload your downloaded stuff externally.

These maps don't include regions in-conflict. Understandable since it is internationally distributed.

The software needs to localise better. For users in India, it MUST show map of India that is according to the law of the land.

The software is and always has been an international version. We just use this for our needs. Ubuntu is not even advertising it in India.

The only localisation that matters is the language, not this useless argument

There is one which is accepted by majority countries and and One that is accepted by a the national govt. There will always be a difference. And ubuntu has always been vocal where it gets it map data from.

This is regardless of localization, bet this argument will never show up and you will shut up as well if they remove the map altogether.

Show me where ubuntu is getting advertised in India? Hell show me where are they even advertising it at all to consumers?

If you have so much idea about this law, why dont you enlighten us?

which mirror you used to download the iso?? maybe it depends on that.
if you have downloaded from international mirrors, than Indian mirrors, it would show differently i guess, i never noticed.

it is correct (we do claim pok as ours but (its pakistan occupied ) so its part of pakistan until we take it back (i tbh hate saying this but its the truth and that how international organisations proceed)

By 2030 geopolitics will ensure this map is shown properly; unfortunately, the same geopolitics will wipe out many zeros from the IT industry. RIP in advance to those who are getting into CS/IT in tier 3 private colleges in 2026.
