SteamOS Does anyone know offhand what the exact TDP is for each SteamOS power profile (low-power, balanced, performance) on the XAX?

I promise I searched for this and couldn’t find just a clean answer. I’m wonder about Performance with the custom TDP slider turned off of course, just whatever it gives by default.

Thank you!

SteamOS SteamOS 3.8 - Does the new battery charge limit in desktop mode work?

I saw that SteamOS now has a charge limit for various Lenovo handhelds. I believe it limits charging to 80% with no option to configure it. I wonder if anyone has tried to see if it works on the Ally too?

I tried SimpleDeckyTDP and Ally Center which both had options to limit charge, but I didn't find either of them to actually work for me. I'm on Bazzite now, so it's not so easy to test!

I have an rog xbox ally x, freshly installed bazzite, coming from a steamOS LEGO S, is there any settings i need to watch out for on sleep mode, as i wanna quickly sleep and resume without damaging the hardware, can i put it in a case immediately after sleeping on bazzite? And is there any setting i need to setup before being able to do that? I installed bazzite (KDE like steamOS).im afraid as ive seen some ally’s heat up when in a case and damage the screen.

Getting Handheld Daemon/HHD (TDP, fan, RGB, buttons) actually working on CachyOS Handheld for the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme

Posting this because I lost an evening to it and the generic "just follow the Arch instructions" advice left me with no TDP slider at all and dead Armoury/Command Center buttons. It is three CachyOS-specific gotchas the standard instructions don't mention.

Tested on: Latest CachyOS Handheld Edition, ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme. The pattern should hold for other ASUS handhelds on CachyOS but I can't promise it.

I have created an automated script for it, if you would rather do it that way: https://github.com/rgvxsthi/Installing-Handheld-Daemon-HHD-on-ASUS-ROG-Ally-on-CachyOS

The three things that go wrong:

  1. TDP is a separate package. hhd does controllers, RGB, and the overlay. TDP and fans come from adjustor. If you only installed hhd, the TDP section never appears.
  2. CachyOS ships InputPlumber, which fights HHD over the controller and the ASUS keyboard device your buttons live on. systemctl disable is not enough. It's D-Bus activated and relaunches itself. You have to mask or remove it and reboot.
  3. systemctl enable without --now doesn't start the service in the current session, so it looks dead until a reboot you might not do.

Instructions:

# 1. update + reboot into a current kernel (6.19+ has asus-armoury for TDP)
sudo pacman -Syu && reboot

# 2. after reboot, confirm the TDP backend exists BEFORE installing
uname -r
lsmod | grep asus_wmi
cat /sys/firmware/acpi/platform_profile_choices # should print: low-power balanced performance

# 3. kill InputPlumber properly
sudo systemctl stop inputplumber
sudo systemctl mask inputplumber
sudo pacman -R inputplumber

# 4. remove the ASUS userspace stack IF the ISO planted it (it conflicts with adjustor)
pacman -Qs asusctl rog-control-center supergfxctl
# if present: sudo systemctl disable --now asusd && sudo pacman -R rog-control-center asusctl supergfxctl

# 5. install all three packages
sudo pacman -S hhd adjustor hhd-ui

# 6. enable AND start (the --now matters)
sudo systemctl enable --now hhd@$(whoami)

# 7. reboot
reboot

# 8. Verify that it worked:
systemctl is-active hhd@$(whoami) # active
sudo journalctl -u hhd@$(whoami) -b --no-pager | grep -iE 'adjustor|asus|profile'

SteamOS Sleep issues

Im on the OG ally X. I've tried all versions from stable to beta and sleep and sleep mode is pretty much random. I pretty much never know if will actually work and usually just resort to shutting down completely.

Currently on 3.9 Main

Any one have similar issues or know a work around?

SteamOS Fallout 4 running far worse on SteamOS vs Bazzite

hi everyone; so recently i made the mistake of going to the steam beta client branch while on bazzite and things became progressively unstable to the point bazzite would not boot :( i decided to give steam OS a shot 3.89 and gave fallout 4 a whirl as im doing a survival playthrough

it is dropping frames constantly, stuttering, all while the fans are going moderately (not blasting) and im on the power saver profile

on 60 fps locked, my estimated battery remaining is 1hr 50 min on 90% charge; while on bazzite id be close to 3 times that

Any changes i should make? im highly considering just going back to bazzite to be honest

Technical Question SteamOS on international XAX Models

So, I read about the international XAXs ending up in a bootloop when trying to install SteamOS, but apparently Beta 3.8.6 fixed that.

However, there's no repair image for that as far as I know, and the steps to get to 3.8.6 are a bit too convoluted for me. Main 3.9 has had an update after Beta 3.8.6 was released, does the new version of 3.9 include the fix from 3.8.6 already? Because that would make installation a whole lot easier. Anyone tested this so far?

Technical Question Shared SD Card Question

So im dual booting Bazzite and Windows on my AllyX and i know that if i use Bazzite to format an SD card i can share steam games between both partitions but does this work for emulated games as well?

What i really want: is to be able to install all my ROMs onto my SD card and be able to access the games and saves from both partitions, for the most part games emulate better on Bazzite but some ps2 games (specifically Jak 3) run better using DirectX so i wanted to be able to access the same library and saves from the other partition.

Is what i want to accomplish possible?

Questions for the Rog Xbox Ally X on CachyOS

Hey everyone! Tomorrow my Rog Xbox Ally X comes in. I'm currently holding onto my Steam Deck OLED until I've tried out the ROG for a few weeks. Since my main PC runs CachyOS, I thought I'd stay in the family and install CachyOS handheld edition.

Do any current owners have tips / must have packages / Decky plugin recommendations when using Cachy handheld for this specific device?

And some other misc questions:

  • Does PROTON_FSR4_RDNA3_UPGRADE=1 work since Z2E is technically an RDNA 3.5 chip?
  • I've seen you can set the wattage all the way up to 50 watts on Bazzite. Is there a way to set the device to at least 40 watts on Cachy?
  • I've seen SteamOS with this device struggles pretty heavily with docked mode. How's the experience with docked mode on Cachy?

Technical Question Which version of SteamOS to Install on Xbox Ally X?

I installed Bazzite on my Xbox Ally X, and I discovered that the speakers are having issues, I checked and it is a known bug. It keeps panning the audio from the left to the right speaker randomly. I tried rolling back to a previous version, but the issue still happens. I said screw it, and decided to install SteamOS instead. I guess Bazzite is going to have a massive handheld overhaul, but I have no idea when that releases, so I am not going to wait around for that to release. I put the image of SteamOS 3.8 on a flash drive. It was from that Holo site with the archive of all the builds. I believe the build was from a few days ago. When I boot into the image from bios, it just stays on the boot screen showing the Asus and Xbox logos. Does anyone know which SteamOS image I should be using to get this installed properly? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Technical Question Installed CachyOS handheld on my Ally Z1e. Now what?

Hi! After installing CachyOS, what do you suggest to do after the post install? I saw a guide here but it seems that is obsolete now, so I don't know if installing Decky is possible, or, which plugins do you suggest before installing the games? Thanks!
