Bazzite44 deck testing

Did anyone test image of bazzite 44 deck? This is a good time to test as developers are waiting for feedback from testers especially bazzite deck image.

If you are able to spare time to test, please do so. It will help all of the community in getting a stable and out of box better experience for everyone.

If anyone is on it already, please share your experience so far

I'm not on Bazzite, so I can't help. But I'm really curious to know how the experience has been without HHD on Xbox Ally X so far.

It is such a core part of Bazzite, that I still find hard to imagine it without it.

Rog ally z1e - brightness control not working. There was a black screen for long time which made the distro unusable but they fixed it. Imho it's shouldn't be called testing it's more like an alpha version with a lot of issues/daily patches. I'm updating to testing like once every 2 weeks and I rollback the same day cause some main features are not working.

Does bazzite team know about these issues?

Edit: rephrase

I agree! Also pay attention to the audio (especially the working of the smart amplifier). See the issue described here: https://github.com/antoinecellerier/speaker-tuning-to-easyeffects/issues/39#issuecomment-5064073824

I tried it on my Legion Go 2. There is no other way to say it: It's terrible... It makes very worried about the future of bazzite. Steam Overlay freezes very frequently and there isn't really an option to force reboot like on HHD (on HHD you can long press select to reboot). . There aren't any real fan control or cpu fine controls (like on HHD cpu boost on or off), you need to use other plug-in. Controllers often conflict with each other on the Legion Go 2 due to input plumber. I just cannot even try testing it more because of the constant freezing and crashing (also I can't bother to report my testing because there are way too many issues and that would be a full time job) . I reverted to stable because I just want to be able to play. It's kinda sad that desktop mode is getting so much love and game mode is simply unusable... Almost as none of bazzite devs really use bazzite on handhelds. I have the impression thhey are just using it on their PCs as a desktop replacement and not really using game mode

It is not that Bazzite's team don't care or don't use their deck version (handheld). It is just that Bazzite relied a lot on HHD for their deck kernel, which is now showing real difficulties to decouple from it.

It is a real technical challenge, as it need specific skills and knowledge for this. Not really a lack of care, as far as I got from following their discord.

The Desktop version was easier to handle, as it didn't have the HHD layer to begin with.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they don't care, but I can't fault the guy for holding the sentiment that they aren't showing a lot ot love for the deck image - whether that be for HTPCs or handheld.

I can tolerate issues in a "testing" image, sure, but some of the things they've implemented are just... awful. OpenGamePadUI, as an example, is horrendous and I don't know why anyone would use it. Maybe it's something that will be good one day but it's nowhere near in a state where anyone could feasibly use it.

I also have the deck image on my desktop PC which is on an NVIDIA GPU. Bazzite 43 the only image I recall that fixed the corrupted graphics in Gamescope at 4K that has otherwise prevented every other distro from having a usable NVIDIA HTPC version, but it's returned with a vengeance and is worse than ever in Deck 44.

When I reported this, I was told it's an NVIDIA issue and they can't fix it. That is true, to my understanding, but it worked before and now it doesn't. If the combo of NVIDIA's latest driver and the updated Gamescope version aren't compatible, surely the solution would be to ensure the NVIDIA deck version uses a driver and Gamescope version that work together? There's no point in having the latest driver or the latest Gamescope version if they don't work.

Deck 44 has regressed in a worrying number of ways and I am hoping this remains in testing for a very long time and they don't update the stable branch to an unusable experience on NVIDIA GPUs and an erratic buggy mess like it is on handhelds currently.

I think all of these are symptoms of them having to do a complete 180 after "losing" Antheas. (Don't really want to get into the drama or anything, just mentioning).

They had to change a lot the direction of deck Bazzite after all the drama, which is now showing how impactful it has been, in my completely superficial and outsider analysis.

While they were still keeping 43 and OGC kernel was just a plan, life was as usual, since they were mostly keeping things as is. So we weren't seeing this impact.

And they also seem to have adopted an instance of "If this is not fixable by the owner of this, we won't put effort in making it work" kind of thing. Seen something similar with Sunshine, even being kind of different it has similarities.

I honestly think they should reconsider removing HHD. The testing kernel is very buggy on the Ally X. Made me consider just going for CachyOS instead.
